Can we keep the discussion about who will fill the role to a minimum, please? It will be announced at the end of summer. End of August, maybe Sepember, at least that's what the rumour mill says.

So, you'd like rabid Doctor Who fans to keep discussions, rumours and speculation about a new Doctor to a minimum. Good luck with that.

I might just have to abandon the thread until there's a definite answer.

You could try, but wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff will prevent it from happening.  Wink

I want the next Doctor to be American
Preferably, R. Lee Ermey, the Drill instructor from Full Metal Jacket (as he is the most American man to have ever lived)

Instead of silly catch-phrases like "allons-y" or "Geronimo", he simply yells "Attention"
Also, The Tardis changes to a Superman-style phone booth and gains the ability to carpet-bomb both time and space,

...
...
I jest, of course

That was the most arrogant and mendacious minute of 'world history,' but nevertheless, it was only a minute. After nature had drawn a few breaths, the star cooled and congealed, and the clever beasts had to die. One might invent such a fable, and yet he still would not have adequately illustrated how miserable, how shadowy and transient, how aimless and arbitrary the human intellect looks within nature. There were eternities during which it did not exist. And when it is all over with the human intellect, nothing will have happened." - Friedrich Nietzsche

I think it would be funny for the BBC to come up with a fake episode showing the regen into someone completely unsuitable, and then "leak" the footage, just to see the furore it causes  Grin

I thought we'd all agreed it would be Herr Doktor, with Colonel "Wolfgrin" Harlot as his adversary...?

OK, I know that's not going to happen, but oddly enough I will feel strangely disappointed whoever it turns out to be because of this  Grin

Listened to the Prom online and it was quite enjoyable this year. I love that Peter Davison and Carol Ann Ford both got huge cheers from the crowd.

Also, the DW theme to wrap up the show.

Just found a wonderful video on youtube.

It's the original 1963 Doctor Who theme slowed down about 10 times. It turns a familiar tune by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop into 21 minutes of Lovecraftian menace (one of the youtube commenters describes it as a "Choral organ opus performed in some cavernous alien craft" which I think sums it up rather well)

There's a feature in next week's Radio Times (3rd - 9th August) about 'The Doctor Who cover that never was' (http://www.doctorwhonews.net/2013/07/radio-times-doctor-who-dummy-cover-300713000017.html).

Shortly before the first episode was broadcast in 1963, the head of the BBC's serials department wrote the following memo to the editor of the Radio Times to complain that Doctor Who wasn't going to the featured on the cover:

"I was unhappy to hear to-day that the proposal to give 'Dr Who' the front page of the 'Radio Times' had now been abandoned. It was particularly distressing to hear that one reason given was lack of confidence in the programme at Controller level. I assure you that this does not exist and if you have a word with I know he will express enthusiasm. I myself believe that we have an absolute knock-out in this show and that there will be no question but that it will run and run. I would be most grateful, if it is not too late, for the decision against it to be reversed, and that will help me to get this show off to a good start".

It's taken them nearly half a century, but the Radio Times have mocked up a dummy cover to show what it might have looked like:

Just a heads up: it's been officially announced that the new Doctor will be revealed this Sunday. 7pm on BBC1, 2pm on bbc america for the American crowd.

I'd provide actual sources if I wasn't on my phone, but the news is on the doctor who part of the bbc website, and the official tumblrs have also announced it, plus there was a video last night at midnight on the bbc, so it's apparently kind of official now.

The bookie's favourite is currently Peter Capaldi, which would confirm my theory that it will be somebody who has already appeared on the show (he was in The Fires of Pompeii and Torchwood - Children of Earth).

Then again, I've also seen odds quoted for for Olivia Colman (The Eleventh Hour), David Walliams (The God Complex), Anthony Head (School Reunion), Bill Bailey (The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe), Simon Pegg (The Long Game), David Morrissey (The Next Doctor), Colin Salmon (Silence in the Library / Forest of the Dead), James Corden (The Lodger / Closing Time), Russel Tovey (Voyage of the Damned), David Harewood (The End of Time), Billie Piper and David Tennant, so maybe after 7 series you'd struggle to find a British actor who hasn't already appeared on Doctor Who.

I suppose we'll find out on Sunday evening...

Anthony Head would be an interesting choice. I'd be willing to wager quite a sum against a female Doctor though. That's a character not meant to be genderbent. Doing so anyway would hurt the show immensely.
