Oh yeah, I am going to interrupt my "Dexter" marathon (a friend copied me the first two seasons, so I am getting caught up) to watch, again. I thought it was quite good and Gwyneth Paltrow bores me to tears, so....
Yeah, I would watch it (again).

Australian Cities as Steampunk Survivors.

This has been a nagging idea of mine for a while:
The age of Steam did not end.

The giant factories, pouring out plumes of viscous coal-fumes have not left us. Ninety percent of Australia's power is created by them. Blimps do plough through our skies, and our great cities are connected by glorious ribbons of steel: rails that span a world, and unite the continents themselves.

Granted, we've shifted up to using diesel, and even highly refined petroleum to power most of our transport. And yes: the style and elegance of the late Victorian era has been let slide. Those of us who still respect and even attempt to emulate it are the staunch protectors of that invaluable set of social niceties - but we live in a world where we must struggle to keep it alive, against the tide of populist modernism.

But we need not turn our backs on the modern world. In fact, all we really need to do at times is look at it through different eyes.

The remnants of that age are all around us, and I find myself constantly surprised as I pause on a street corner in Sydney, and catch a glimpse of a sandstone tower standing next to a radio tower, and think: "How Steamy!" Out here in the antipodes, with our bolted-on colonialism, we have our fair share of wonderful architecture and archaic symbolism and fittings.

So here is my thought: I will try to take photos of these anachronisms, and present any who would care to see them with a glimpse of a living breathing city that is still firmly tied to the Age of Steam.

Since this thread appears to have revivified, I shall post here.

I'm from Canberra, where there are steampunks but nothing from the Victorian era to support it.

However, events occasionally occur. As a part of our regular monthly balls, this month we have a time-traveler's ball, where we shall be dancing dances from 1450-1900 (all taught, no partner necessary). I know for a fact that there shall be at least a couple of steampunk costumes there, and at least one of the Doctors. The content of the dances themselves is entirely historical.

Here's a bit of propaganda if you want more info:

I shall have to try and get to this. I know that we are providing the choir at break for the xmas dance, but those are the only ED balls I've managed to get to, and I must do better.

There's a preview of what I'm wearing in the Pin-up thread. I'll introduce you to people.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I'm trying to get a dance on the program that's quite steampunk, in my opinion - The Music Box, inspired by the clockwork doll scene in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The dancers are clockwork, and you can go to town on the automata style. If you've seen the video of Abney Park's Herr Drosselmeyer's Doll, it has a similar flavour.
