Lucretia smiled and turned on the charm. "It is a pleasure to see you again." She said handing Julian the bottle.  "I remembered you were fond of this last time."

Una bit her lip and then smiled She had one half the battle won and now she had reinforcements.  She held hands with Fetch Feeling a good bit better.  They would have to navigate this together and that was a comfort.  "I would like to meet the people you worked for once."

Julian accepted the bottle and embraced Lucretia briefly. "Aha! yes, I remember this stuff!" He exulted. "Carstairs!" he called to the butler, "Put this in ice and on teh table! We'll add it to dinner!"

"Yes, sir, very good, sir." The gigantic, burly, not-at-all-butlerlike butler sresponded, and did as instructed.

"Now, If teh Tong would get here -"

"Wait no longer, O great ones." An exotically-beautiful young Chinese woman stood in the far eastern doorway, flanked by her bodyguard. Dressed in a deep azure silk dress and bustle that rivaled the others for sheer opulence, she bowed as deeply as the bustle would allow, her long, black,  springlike ringleted tails on each side of her head bouncing as she did so. She bore no signs of weaponry - but the Tong was famous for concealed items as well as its operatives needing no armament but their bare hands. Her bodyguard wore the simple dark-blue-and-black close-fitting uniform of the Tong, his mouth and chin and everything below that covered by a tight-fitting veil. A sword much like one of Fetch's shortswords jutted up above his back. How they had managed to enter the mansion armed was a mystery, but understandable given the Tong's reputation.

"This one is Siu Lin, Blue Lotus of the Tong of the Azure Moon, at your service," she said, introducing herself. "This one is honored to be emissary of Our Master Liu, and escort of our Lord Shadow, Fetch, called Mikhail, and His Lady Mallory, called Una. This one bears messages from Master Liu for the Family LeCroix and for Lord Shadow from Master Liu and the Hall Of Scrolls. This one's escort is Tuan Fang. Please to allow these to join your gathering."

"You are welcome, Lady Lin," Julian answered. He introduced his wife, and the rest of the family.

Lady Lin bowed and greeted each family member in turn. She was inscrutable to all save Fetch, in response to whom she blushed slightly and fought to keep from smiling too openly. Fang leaned in close and whispered something in polyglot Chinese at which Lin stiffened and composed herself. That small departure was all that broke her cool formality.

Hmmm, thought Carmilla to herself.

"Hello grandpa," Dees heavy voice cut through the room as he pulled out the chair for his lady. Greeting his grandmother with a warm hug, he kissed his aunts on the cheek, winking at Lillith as he did. The two of them had been very close when he was young and she had tought him more than his father ever had. The only person whod had more of an impact on his life was the old man himself.

"Grandpa you know my lady friend already, the rest of you this is my partner and future wife Lucretia."

Lucretia smiled eyes flowing over the room cataloguing everything she saw.  The siblings she had heard of never met but heard of them enough to know they were to be approached with care. She handed the box to the lady of the house. "I was told roses are your favourite flower."  If there was one thing that had been drilled in to her head since birth it was to make a good impression.

Una watched Lady Lin trying to understand her movements.  There was something in them that rubbed her the wrong way.  She retuned the bow tho because being impolite was very dangerous.

"Miss Lucretia," Lin said in acknowledgement. Just that, acknowledgement. "Mister Darren Lecroix. This one is happy, your acquaintance to make."

Just the minimum acknowledgement, and ducking behind her feigned foreignness to deliver veiled slights, Fetch thought. She was showing off for him, apparently. It made his blood turn sour. He subtly fingersigned to her to cease the ridiculous act, adding it was a bad idea with the Lecroix family as it was at present. She surprised him with her response, since she delivered it obliquely as a seeming observation and her reaction to it.

"Master Shadow, this one is not of your level, but still I cannot fathom your insistence upon standing upon your feet. Others should stand before you, not the other way 'round. Surely we stand upon a higher plane."

"I stand where I stand, lady Lin. I kneel where I must and bow to none but those who warrant it. He bowed to her, then. Just a regular bow and nothing more, as clear a message of where he stood than any spoken answer.

Lucretia smiled bitingly pleasant at Lin. Oh she knew the slight intended but better people had tried worse to get a rise out of her. You did not survive long as the public face of the progress city branch of the Lecroix if something like that got under your skin.  If that lady thought she was dealing with the inept and badly handled management that ruled in Andrew's day she was in for a nasty surprise. Perhaps Lucretia herself would get to show her how wrong Lin was perhaps with the blade hidden in her boot.  That would be amusing but not in the house the mess would not give the best impression to the in-laws.  "Please to meet you as well." She said with a bow and a carefully constructed expression.

Una watched in the same way one would observe two big cats sizing each other up.  There were things to be learned here.  She took Fetch's hand wondering how Lin would react. She was fairly sure Lin was testing boundaries and realy the Mallory bit of her said it was far better Lin find the traps than her.

Then Leona Le Croix spoke up and she had a way of making everyone listen.  "Thank you for the gift dear And you heard right roses are my favourite.  Miss Lin you have come to the house for a joyous occasion. I believe we have wedding plans to speak of and a lovely meal waiting for us.  Shall we?"

Fixing the two women with a stern gaze, Dee's voice brooked no arguement as he said quietly but firmly, "Yes Lets."

Any other day hed be glad to step back and let them go at it, but he didnt feel like cleaning blood off the floors, because he knew if it got physical, he'd be the one cleaning it up

Fortunately Lin proceeded to the table with the others with no further incident other than to tug upon Fetch's sleeve when it became necessary to walk closely together to get from the corridor to the dining room. "With apologies, Milady Lin, I must remind you that such days are long gone," Fetch said as gently as possible, also gently disentangling the girl's fingers from his sleeve. "The Blue Lotus needs must attend to Tong Business before matters of the heart, in any case."

"I would advise one not to press bygone heart's matters here too strongly, lest one's present heart be pierced," he added, referring to a line from an ancient poem, while composing his face in a gently stern expression, while gently squeezing Una's hand reassuringly. He did not see, or perhaps did not choose to acknowledge seeing, Lin's other hand clutching her robe as though a dagger were secreted there under the fabric.

Fortunately, no further rebuke was necessary, at least for the duration of the appetizers...

Una was very glad to have a buffer between her and Julian. He was still worrisome to her but it was getting better little by little and Fetch's mother actually smiled at her.  The meal was amazing if only she didn't have to be so very careful to have perfect manners while watching Lin.  She did not trust that girl and the way she looked at her Fetch.

Lucretia was fairy relaxed and chatting with Dee's aunt.  The Le Crox family was powerful but nowhere near as frighting as dinner with her own parents. It was nights like this when the coldness of her childhood was almost worth it.  "If you ever want to visit us in the city I can take you to the most fantastic dressmakers.  There was even an armoured corset that was made to withstand blaster fire and was simple to wash I imagine you would be interested in."

Finally, they sat down to dinner and tucked in. Lady Lin used both her chpopsticks, which she had brought along in her purse, and teh silverware on the table. Fetch/Mikhail just use dteh regular silverware, eyeing Lin and her bodyguard as they deftly switched between types of utensils. He smirked a little, then went ahead and ate without further apparent notice of teh two."So, Carma, what have you been doing?" He asked his sister. Carmilla blushed slightkly, and replied, I think I may have found a man of my owm." her brother, sister and parents all mades noises of interest; such had been an issue for her in their own minds since her longtime partner died in a conflagration in Singapor. "Not definite yet, but could I bring him home to neet you all whjen I'm sure?"

"As long as he doesn't soil the carpet like Piltdown did," Lilith jibed.

"His name was Perthdon," Carmillashot back. both were secretly grinning, it was a favorite annoying game of theirs.

"Ladies." Julian said. Nothing more was necessary, and both settled down.

Mikhail nudged Mallory and winked. His sisters had always been going at it like that.

Mallory giggled a little bit and then frowned as a spark jumped from her fork.  "I think there is some bad news coming. or at least that is what the chatter is."

Lucretia narrowed her eyes, she had expected there would be some trouble but more from Lin and more like after dessert. Oh well it was a nice meal while it lasted.  She started scanning the room for the best places to fire her blaster from.

Dee looked at the little girl with temporary disbeleif "They cant possibly be that stupid. This place is even more fortified than Lecroix Tower!" His hand drifted to the butt of the gun tucked under his arm. His other hand was on lucretias thigh.

Una felt the whole table's eyes on her and got a bit nervous.  "There was some sort of rocket that landed in the yard the intercoms are buzzing all over with it."

Lucretia looked at Dee and nodded. "I wonder if the trouble from home followed us."

At that moment one of the household guards came to the doorway of the dining room, and motioned to Carstairs the butler, who went over to the door, listened, gave instructions, and then returned to the table, addressing Julian and his wife.  "Begging Sir and Madam's pardon, but there is, indeed, a rocket embedded in the lawn; it seems to be of Austrian manufacture, but it has not detonoated, but rather expelled a curious-looking  cylinder. The guards are retrieving it now; I have issued orders to follow gas protocol, just in case--!"

The Guard commandant entered, bearing the cylinder, which had split down the middle and disgorged a paper message:

Quote
La Familia Lecroix,
We of La Familia Moroso remember the murder of our patriarch at Vera Cruz during the American aggression against Mexico. We seem to redress that light. An example of our determination to do so will have transpired by the time you read this message. The Agricultural Float known as Seabat One will be sunk and its inhabitants, every last one, put to the sword.

I look forward to your eventual annihilation.

Respectfully You servant,

Miguel Moroso y DeGuerro y Sanchez, Capitan de Battlecruiser Cockatriz.
"The Golden Gun can be there in five minutes!" Mikhail said, jumping to his feet.

"What is the american aggression they are talking about and why are they after us about it?" Una asked confused.

"Does it realy matter? What ever the reason they can't attack our city and get away with it."  Lucretia said checking the gun holstered to her leg.

That is where this one's message comes in, I do believe, Lin spoke up, suddenly. "This one did not understand the message until just now. It is, simply, that "the American branches of the families of Lecroix and of Malone did send scions to West Point in America, and they did fight at Vera Cruz. There they did that which might cause trouble soon in the offing." Seh smiled a erathe rcold, self-satisfied smile. "it seems my heart is avenged, Lord Shadow..."

She looked at Lin in a way that was pure Mallory and smiled slowly.  "As I remember papa saying I doesn't matter who started it we end it in in flames and lament if we must." She gave a small curtsy to her hosts.  "Sorry we have to go."

Lucretia was rather surprised by the girl's ruthless turn of phrase. Perhaps there was hope for her yet. She scrambled as smoothly as possible along side Dee.  "Sorry the American connection blind sided me.  I should have know that coming in."

"Worry bout it later my love, we got meskins to kill." Outside the dining room was a study in controlled chaos as security personnel surged to and froe about their work, securing everyone and locking everything down. Theyd been drilled to the breaking point for something they thought would never happen and now that it was they were eager to prove their worth to the clan patriarch.

Dee helped lucretia into their flagship as quickly as possible and ordered the captian to take off as fast as possible while he ran to the comm room and issued an all points bulletin to marshall and the rest of his underlings.

Fetch plopped down into the Gun's pilt seat and ran through the preflight checks, filling the lofting tanks and firing the flashboilers to get the ship airborne and moving, setting the props to optimum pitch and readying the methane-hydrogen rocket arrays. "You strapped in yet, Una?" he called back on the intercom. as clearance was obtained and reinforcements were promised from Justice Central. "Hard burn in fifteen..."

"now that we have better access to the main houses records. There wont be gaps like that again."  That scrawny Chinese girl was never going to get the drop on Lucretia again.  In fact she was going to have to have words with her later. Words laced with either poison or steel if she had her way. She would not tolerate anyone that tried sabotaged her union with Dee or messed with her standing in the family.  "I put in called for reinforcements but it is going to take a bit for the heavily armed gunships to scramble."

"Yup." Una said cheerfully. Now that they were out of the house the pressure was off her and she could act without having to think all the time about offending others. "I think your family liked me sort of.  I mean no one attacked me or anything so that is good right?"

Seabat Float was already burning. Children screaming, adults hollering as gun and sword mowed then down, and firebombs eradicated the yeast and vegetable crops. All the while, the arrowhead silhouette of the Cockatrice hummed and buzzed like a gigantic, demented wasp overhead, it's keel bays dumping destruction with pinpoint accuracy.

"That's enough! Leave the rest to tell the tale!" Enemy officers shouted as platforms and hawsers were hauled back aboard, and wingpack-equipped stormers swooped upward. The float began heeling over to one side, one corner and the adjacent edge beginnig to go under as the wrecked older-model thunderwasp guardship slipped sideways and then tumbled from its pad and into the sea, her pilot slumped unnaturally in the command chair. Her twin ship had put up a brave but doomed resistance and been blown up in midair, the storm's static drowning out the pilots' pleas for attention and help.

-
Fetch answered, "Carmilla and Lilith seemed especially glad to see you, though they didn't say much. I expect thaey were a bit shy, thinking maybe you were feeling the same and didn't want to make it hard for you."

He started as a voice like steel-edged honey said, close at hand, "Yeah, there's that, and the fact both of you looked like you were having a good, scary time of it," Carmilla said with a chortle, leaning into the strap she was holding onto next to the crew chair she was strapped into. "What, you thought you were the only people on here? Like I'd miss an opportunity like this. Lil, you back there?"

"Yeah, I'm here you talky git. Mik, go ahead and burn already, time's a-wastin'!" Lil shot back, cantankerpous as ever. "Looks like we're all back together again, Gawd help us."

Mikhail obliged, and whoops abounded as the Gun shot forward like a loosed arrow.

"Don't let it happen again." Those simple words delivered with steel and conviction behind them were the only admonishment Dee needed.  "We cant afford to be left out of the know."

The Lecroix flagship had nothing on The Golden Gun as it shot ahead. The heavy hitter was built to take punishment not chase pirates. Even still, its engineers, prompted on by the promise of a raise and threats pushed the monster faster than it had ever needed to travel.

Una let out a little woop as they shot forward. "See this is why I missed ladies night three weeks in a row. I made it for Fetch. Sort of like a large engagement ring only it has guns." She looked over at Fetch smiling.  A ring with guns was the perfect one for him.

"The light armoured units are pulling up along side us in formation and we have around four mins until the heavies arrive. Marshal is calling on the second line to get your orders." Lucretia was monitoring the pack coming together seamlessly around them.  "I can see smoke Dee. This looks bad."

"Capitan,  spotters report a large target approaching from the City at an absolutely impossible speed; he must have made a mistake, nothing is that fast... The ensign listened to another report. "Larger targets are showing lights further back, surrounded by smaller units approaching at what looks like flank speed. Looks to be light frigate-class, and a couple of big first-rates farther back in the main body--!" he cut off as large-bore gatling rounds and three rockets struck the ship from a seemingly improbable range as Fetch and Company aboard the Golden Gun began taking long-distance intimidation shots at the Cockatrice.

-------------

The Float and the departing enemy ship sprang into slivery focus as the moon came up. the ship's lights cold be seem winking slightly as personnel moved between then and the pursuers; guns on turrets began to wave in the GoldenGun's direction as Fetch's, Carmilla's and Lil's potshots actually managed to score a few hits.

"Full power to engines!" Teh Captain yelled.

"But Sir! the marines have not yet completed reboard-!"

"NOW, Ensign, or I shoot you where you stand!"

The Cockatrice suddenly lurched forward and shot away at high speed just as the Golden Gun drew within a half-mile of her.

"Not today, Lecroix, But soon!" Capitain Moroso cackled over the radio as the ship disappeared into the clouds.

--------
Fetch continued one after the fleeing enemy, but the rocket tanks were beginning to show low pressure, and he kept looking back at the stricken Float.
"DAMN!" he shouted, pounding the armrest of the command chair as the rockets spluttered and then died, leaving them to the turbine props. "I guess we should go help the survivors," he said through grinding teeth. Someday he would make those bastards pay...
