Una made a map in her head of the twisting hallways as they went. She had never been to this part of the building before.  It was a good distracting thought to keep her from thinking about how she was going to fit back in to a family that when she had been pretty much dead for quite a while.  The memories were helpful but the emotions were still large strange things that she was bad at controlling.

Fetch/Mikhail struggled to keep from fingering his blaster as he followed Dee and Lucretia into the depths of the building. He noticed that the building looked vaguely like his memories of his father, Julian's, old digs, except that there were branching corridors in places where Julian would never have allowed them; far too many places for enemies to take cover in should they decide to storm the building, in Fetch's opinion. He leaned in to Una's side, saying, "We'll go to Father's place after we get through with this little soiree, OK? Can't leave Mom hangin', she'll get us for that."

He was also, admittedly, somewhat jealous; Brimford's manner with Una/Mallory was entirely too familiar for his liking. He moved close, and circled Mallory's waist with his arm, much the same as Dee was doing with Lucretia. Brimford managed to affect a lack of notice or interest, which could very well be a lifesaving decision on his part, since jealous protectiveness was beginning to seriously eat away at his Justiciary professionalism.

The room at the end of the hall was opulent with well polished wood and lather chairs.  It looked just right for the heart of an empire and Lucretia worked hard to keep it that way.  "Please have a seat Mr Malone and allow me to make you a drink."

Una found a chair to perch on and watched. There was much she wanted to learn about negotiations. She wanted to know how other branches of her family operated.

Dee took his seat at the head of the table, the chair looked No different than the rest except for it's height. Sitting several inches higher than the rest it loaned him a small psychological advantage.  A box of cigars sat in front of him.  Taking one from the box, he lit it with a small match.  The tip glowing bright blue as he puffed on it.

Mikhail (He was fully a Lecroix now, at least for the duration of the meeting) took a seat opposite Lucretia. Simmers and Bullock came in and sat at the lower extreme o the group, Simm sitting one chair down from Mikhail, leaving the seat between them vacant, and Bullock down-table beside Simm. "Mallory, darlin', you can sit with the rest of us, you're family as far as I'm concerned," Mikhail said warmly. "C'mon, sit here with me."

Simm spoke up, "I and Mr. Bullock, here've been invited as a neutral party. We'll just observe 'til we're needed."

Una smiled as she walked over but kept an eye on Brimford. She was not entirely sure of him.  So far he was normal but then again so was Sam at first.

Lucretia set a glass of water in front of Brimford and set a sheaf of papers in front of her,  "I believe you have some information that Miss Malone should know before she goes to negotiate her own merger with our patriarch.  I hear Mikhail is going to ask for her hand and if she knows what resources she has going in I bet we will all like the outcome quite a bit more."

Dee watched silently,  his presence here was merely a formality to remind everyone who ran this branch.  Negotiations were Lucretias forte,  one which she'd perfected in to an art form. It made him feek goid to see her in her element. Even Fetch seemed more focused, more solid. He was a true lecroix at this moment. Puffing at his laz cigar, he silently buzzed one of the undersecretaries to bring up drinks. Apple pie lazshine for himself and an assortment for the others

"So, there is more than one merger being sought, ah?" Brimfordsaid, his eyes twinkling. "May I offer a toast to our respective successes?" he said, eyes twinkling. So, she's not yet betrothed, eh? he thought, a vague, rather treasonous idea crossing his consciousness, to be discarded by a short shake of his head. "To the mergers!"

Mallory was happy to see the under secretaries bring her a cup of the chocolate liqueur she had much enjoyed at the club.  "We are going to travel to Julian's home after things are settled here.  I want to know what I have to bring to the matrimonial bargaining table. I don't know how things have changed over the years but back when I did this the first time there were days of ironing out who would get what trade routes and how we would seat the families."

MIkhail seconded the toast, and drank it, the cocktail that Lucretia had made for him tickling the sweet buds on his tongue and the sour buds at the same time. HE calmed down quite a bit after the toast, perhaps Lucretia had sensed his agitation and given him something a bit stronger than regular alcohol. he took another sip, and there it was, the nearly-masked aftertaste of a mild root extract that worked much the same as aspirin, commonly used in concentrated form by the Tongs in their training exercises to simulate a poisoned arrow, since in such a heavy dose it produced a stinging sensation in the wound, without the lethal effects of an actual poison. He nodded at Lucretia and smiled slightly, an acknowledgement of her efforts.

"Well, I'd think that we have more important things to discuss than the seating arrangements; we do need to iron out the trade issues. but before we get onto that, I and Simmers and co. need access to your ship and its logs to check on possible leads, and assurance that the crew will cooperate in the investigation of Putney's death and the issue of whom it was that attacked your sortie."

Lucretia nodded. "He is completely right we cannot allow attacks on ships bound for this city.  It is bad for business." She frowned nothing should ever get in the way of business especially in Progress City.  "We could help you deal with the problem however. We both do have vested interest in this after all."

Exhaling a thick cloud of acrid smoke, Dee set the cigar down and said "as much as I hate to take a page from my father's book,  Why Don't we just burn the sombitches out and split their territory "

"A good idea," Fetch said. "But to do that, we need to find out where they are and what their territory actually is. I seem to remember hearing a few years ago about a Mexican air marshal, name of Mauricio Mondragon. Seems he was shouting up a stink about, what was it...'Anglo incursions in Mexico.' " he pronounced the word like a native mexican, with the silent 'x.' "He made a lot of allusions to some 'great weapon' that he was building to fight the 'anglos' with."

"Looks like he is perhaps back again."

"So what is our closest outpost?  I don't want us walking in to a trap. Tho I suppose we could bring on both families in a joint effort." Mallory was unsure but hopeful this was a step in the right direction.

Lucretia "I suppose you could try that but get Julian's permission. It is best to do these things as by the book as you can."  She was rather hoping Una was not dragging them in to something they could not handle.

Dee gave his partner a quizzical look "there's a book? When did we get a book? Mikhail did you know we had a book? " his voice was full of good natured sarcasm as he patted Lucretias thigh and smiled at the Malones.

"I believe that may be the book that everyone refers to but none have seen," Mikhail answered, in an odd amalgam of both Fetch's sardonic oriental mysticism and Mikhail's roguish near-cynical sarcasm. "In any case, I think that both Miss Lucretia and our beloved Mallory are right."

"So other than the Golden Gun and one rather burnt airship what can the Malones offer?  I know you and Dee have to keep things under control here so you cant split things too fine but surely there are some Malones that want to strike back too?" Una was trying to slip back in an old way of thinking and it was sort of working.

The whole Western Fleet would be available once war is declared," Brimford offered. "But on whom do we declare it? This Mondragon fellow wouldn't be actilng alone, would he -- wait, that name sounds familiar. There was a small consortium by that name several years ago, tried to seize our Mexican Gulf Market Fisheries arm, could that be the culprit?"

"Ah, yes..." Mikhail/Fetch had been thinking about the whole family, and how he and Mallory fit into the whole genealogical puzzle, ever since he had realized that Julian was, in fact, his father.

"Lilith, and Carmilla. A rather deadly pair. We four, me, Mal, Lil and Carmy, were all inseparable as kids. I still remember when the Scatelli clan tried to leave us in the bilge tank of their family's yacht, Carmy and Big Sis pulled their leg daggers and picked the lock from under the grate, and got us out. Carmy was always good at throwing sharp things." He chuckled. "She kept comin' up with long knives an' spiky things to throw and slash with that night; even Big Sis was surprised. She kept askin,' Where'd that one come from?!' "

When she was twenty four, I think it was, Big sis Lil moved to her husband Jack's plantation in California, and Carmy decided to be an assassin; If I remember, there's a 'Malone Carmilla' in the Scrolls of Favorites in the Blue Tong Chapterhouse. Only the best and most dependable Tong allies are inscribed there."

Una blinked rapidly as things clicked in her head.  It had all started with one of her friends at school holding a party that her father refused to let her go to.  She had snuck out ended up at the wrong address and ended up at a party the younger Le Crox were holding. She was sure they would find her out but things went surprisingly well and suddenly they were a unit. God they had all been so young back then. "I would like to see both of them again. Perhaps a visit is in order after we tell Julian about the threat?"

"Mom might've called them in for the evening. I wouldn't put it past 'em to already be at the house even now, Carmy especially." Mikhail said with a note of admiration in his voice. "Or, right here keeping an eye on us," he added, mischievously, remembering a certain redheaded 'firecrewman' who'd seemed slightly new in comparison to his/her fellows. come to think of it, the person's firesuit ahd been rather loose, open at the waist, and the material of the suit had moved oddly over the calf that had been on teh side that he had seem of the person, almost as if they were wearing a long dirk in a leg sheath there. it was something no one but a ninja-trained assassin would have noticed, but it was there nonetheless.

"If there is a calling in of the clans and I think there will be than Dee and I will help you present the deal your kin has put forward.  I think Julian will be more receptive if the highest earning branch throws it's weight behind you." Not to mention this would make sure that in the opening of new routes they got first pick.  Lucretia knew that eventually Una would challenge her for that right but for now that girl was at a disadvantage and Lucretia would take what she thought she could get away with.

Una thought about it and nodded. "Brimford Could you find a place to stay within the city until we return? I can offer you a place at the ancestral home but I am not too sure it is set up for visitors."  Really she should see to restoring that soon. After all she could not have family stay at her room in the justice tower.  It was small and the close approximation to that many justices might be unsettling.

"I shall avail myself of your hospitality them, Mr. Lecroix." Brimford said equably.

"We just happen to have a couple of leads to follow up in that vicinity," Simmers said, and Bullock asked, "Would you like for us to escort you, Mr. Brimford? If that is alright with messire Lecroix, of course."
