"Aye, Chief. Be good to my Chief, Marshall, you hear?" Trapper said with a rather ponderous wink.

Trapper sorted the workers as per instructions, having them fall in, Justice and Bull alike, in their respective ranks. As he prepared to tell them off to their duties by squad, one corporal spoke up as he snapped to attention, "Justice Trapper Sir, shouldn't we just take it easy while herself's away?"

von Trappe rounded on the man, twiddling his lit cheroot around with his tongue as he stuck his face up close to the corporal's; the smell of overheated flesh and scorched body oil wafted into the air along with the little cigar's smoke, and Trapper said to the now-petrified and quite possibly suddenly incontinent corporal, "What do you think, Barrett?"

"R-right you are, Sir! getting right to work, sir!"

"Git back in line, Corporal, I haven't given your lot your assignment yet..."
-----------
"Well, I guess it's a date, then." Mikhail said, "We'll see you tomorrow, about ten O'Clock, is that alright?"

"Yes your Papa and I will be waiting in the villa." He could almost feel the smile in her voice.

Mallory realized something and frowned. "Will this realy be ok?  Your father hates me and he killed me once, Well sort of." She was still scared of him and as much as she wanted to me her love's mother he still made her shutter.

Escorting Agnes out the door, ignoring the many stares of both the justices and his own men. Marshall held the door open to his command vehicle.  Once they were settled in, he barked at the driver in Russian who whisked them off to a nearby bar while Marshall produced a bottle of his own homebrew from under the seat.

"This city always surprises me."  Agnes said looking out the window.  "At one time we were at each other's throats and now the Le Crox family is on their way to becoming model citizens.  Or at least descent ones and the Malones are riseing from the ashes to join them."  She smiled at Marshall.  "There are times i miss being able to just shoot my problems."

Trapper felt a tug at his elbow and glanced to that side. Eh? nobody ther--!

Tug-tug. TUG!

The third tug nearly pulled him over sideways, and he looked sideways and down, and found himself glaring into the mutual glare of the diminutive and white-moustachioed face of Professor Primson, Chief of Research and Development.

"Down 'ere, you great hulking oaf! We need about five of your bulls to come down an'  help us with Project GR; Teddy's gone wrong and fell over."

Trapper bemusedly remembered that "Project GR" was the Giant Robot that R&D kept in a seven-stories-tall berth in the subbasement of the Tower; it was one of the biggest and most powerful robotic weapons ever built, and was kept on hand just in case it were to be needed. Primson and his people kept it up and running.

"Alright, I'll send Bridgeport's squad down in 'alf a minute, they're restin' up on break after shiftin' a tank that didn't survive the mass barrage." Trapper said...

Fetch looked deep into Una's eyes and smiled. "Dad will respect you as my guest. He might be livid about it for a while, but once he hears our plans and sees the benefit of cooperating, everything should be fine." I hope, he added to himself.
--------
In a sitting room of the mansion belonging to himself and Yvonova, Julian Lecroix sat perusing a volume on surf fishing rods and reels as he listened to his wife's  account of the fateful telephone call.

"Yes. I did tell him he should call you, but I didn't know he had remembered quite so much," he answered. "So he wants to marry the girl, does he?" The calm in his voice, to those who knew him well, was ten times more frightening than if he had simply gone berserk and started tearing the house apart. "She'd better be on the up-and-up, or Ill find the old stewpot in the basement..." There was a also a note of hope in his voice as well. It was not clear just what the hope was for, however...

Mallory was willing to do almost anything for Fetch.  He had saved her many times over and she knew she would never be at home without him.  Mallory had more words for emotions but she was still unsure of herself with them.  "I would go anywhere for you.  I want them to like me, the me that I am now The one that loves you more than anything.  What ever I did back then or didn't do it doesn't matter. What does matter is we have to get married because I can't go without you."  She held on to him almost bursting in to tears again at the thought of being denied her own happy ending.

"Sorry I didn't know how scared I still was."  Mallory was finding she disliked these emotional shifts that were hard to understand. She nuzzled his head and smiled. "You smell nice. Like soap and warm."  There was a soft thunk as a bit of tube mail fell in to their basket from Dee and Lucretia.

"Now,  what's this?" Mikhail opened the standard-issue tubemail receptacle box. "From Dee, and Lucretia, both." He popped the end of the tube off, and extracted the contents, deftly popping the flap open on the envelope. and stowing the dispatch tube in the rack provided on the side of the box; three others already were in repose there, awaiting either use or to be sent back to Central Routing. He read the contents of the envelope, said 'Merger?' and 'hmmp'-ed a couple of times, and then handed it to Mallory. "What do you make of this?"
-------------
Trapper had taken a stroll down the access corridor (the same one that Simmers had gone down by accident after his near-miss with Fetch and Una), to see about this giant robot business. He'd been there before, of course, but the Giant was always an interesting bit of kit, and he secretly felt that the Big Girl (as the giant was often called; it had a sport of cyclopean female charm about it) had a thing for him, or at the very least liked to tease him on his occasional visits. Little incidents always seemed to happen when he was looking at her, or if he glanced away for a moment; it was well-knowmn that the the gigantic machine, though requiring a driver, was also able to move on her own, and had a rudimentary AI system.

His heart was wrenched, though, to see her sitting down in an almost fetal position, while the technicians and scientists scurried about or stood in small groups trying to figure out howto make her stand up; there seemed to be some kind of issue with that relatively simple command or the execution thereof. The air down in the gigantic twelve-story lab was spotless as ever, but something in it made him want to cough suddenly, and he cleared his throat, much more loudly that he had intended, in fact. The sound carried through the massive space, echoing off of every metal. stone and wooden surface, much like an ill-timed, comical sneeze in a quiet cathedral. With horror, he realized tat not only every human in the lab had heard it and was craning his or her head ceilingward, but that the Giant had done so as well! Primson's voice could be heard immediataely after, saying "Well, so she does still have normal 'earing." Apparently realizing who the throat-clearer was, or else just seizing an intuitive opportunity, the professor could be heard to say in an excited voice, "Now, look, Dearie! Von Trappe 'imself's 'ere! You like Trapper, don't you? Can't you stand up and say ''ello' to Trapper like a nice girlie?"

And thus the Giant suddenly sprang to her feet like a spry, athletic schoolgirl (the people on the lab's bottom floor screeching and scurrying to get out of the way), actually staring with both photoreceptor eyes directly into Trapper's, and emitting a groaning, booming sound that Trapper suddenly realized were the wordparts "HUH-LOAH TRAH-PUHR"

"Oh, Hi th-!" Trapper cut off, seeing the 'eyelid'-like protective door of the left receptor close and then open as the head tilted in that direction and forward, and then back to their regular positions.

The metal Giant had just WINKED coquettishly at him!
"OH, you charmer, you!" He exclaimed, rather childishly delighted.

The Golden Fleece was in a bad way; it was obvious that she would have to be abandoned over Santa Catalina Island. It was not clear why the Cocatriz had broken off the attack, or where she had gone, but at the moment, the salvation of the Fleece's crew, passengers, and complement was paramount, and they transferred to the battered Leopard, which had suffered damage to her airscrews over the Fresno valley and had lagged behind until the engineers managed a herculean feat of midair battle damage repair. It was with great sadness that Putney and the others watched from the Leopard's Bridge as the darling of the Malone fleet sank toward the water far below, blazing and exploding all the way down.

It should have been over, as Putney made his way to his temporary quarters aboard the Leopard after performing his toilette in the communal officer's head down at the other end of the frigate's main corridor. The enemy should have been escaped from for now, but a shadow looming up behind Putney negated that bit of shouldness...

Mallory looked at it and pondered. "They can't all be like Sam can they?  I mean my family."  She had memories now and wanted to get to know her people but Sam's deception had hurt a lot.

There was an old protocol that pinged the Le Croix tower every time a Malone ship got close. "Dee I think you better have a look at this.  Something isn't right just outside of our airspace."  Lucretia was wondering if in fact the Malones weren't launching a near suicidal attack on the city.  The one that had written sounded reasonable but who knows how many Sam had chipped to follow him.

Leopard's Aetherman reported to the frigate's captain that a Progress City outrider station (most likely a surface-level tethered buoy scow with a skeleton crew and an aetheradio) had just issued a ping; the ships codebreakers deciphered the hastily-scrawled message that a ship with Malone particulars had just passed their location. Leopard's captain considered the possibilities, and then summoned the Diplomatic sortie's second in command, Reginald  Malone,  to the bridge. Reg entered the bridge soon after, and authorized the continuation of the mission, and the Mayday hail to Progress City Central Traffic Control; Voice communication being unreliable more than one hundred miles out, the mayday was sent via the old system of Aether Pulse Morse Code, with a Black Tubemail Special Package to be delivered to the Lecroix Headquarters.

Due to battle damage, the Black Tubemail coding became garbled upon transmission, and had to be resent several times. The pulsed mayday indicated that Golden Fleece had been destroyed by an aerial Mexican pocket battlecruiser named Cockatriz, and had to be abandoned over Catalina. Duty of the second in Command to report that Putney Malone had been assassinated, possibly by an enemy infiltrator, but that the merger was still sought by Malone of America LTD., in Putney's memory.

When the diplomatic Black Tubemail packet was finally sent ungarbled, one of it's requests included investigation of the murder of Putney Malone by the purported Malone and Lecroix Justices now employed by the Progress City Tower of Justice, and whichever other parties could be spared for the investigation, including a neutral party drawn from the City's private investigative population.

In a bizarre twist of fate, a report arrived on the Chief's desk that Simmers Wellenhott and Bullock unit were in fact investigating the death of a Blue Dragon Tong operative who had fallen afoul of a certain Mexican faction in the City's finest hotel. Trapper, being in charge, was advised of the automatic Black Tubemail sent care of Lecroix Tower, and found that and the report on Simm and Bullock, and made the obvious decision. He buzzed the chief's secretary. "Shirley? get Justices Fetch and Una for me if you will, and get a harness bull squad out to fetch Wellenhott and Unit. We have a serious situation developing. Oh, and get a thunderwasp escort together, there's a badly damaged Malone frigate bringing a diplomatic group from the Malone Company in for a meeting with Dee's folk. It's a peaceful embassy, so have 'em be respectful, but on their guard. There's a rogue battlecruiser out and about someplace, might be Mexican, might not." He considered for a moment, and then added, "Better get a flotilla of gunships in the air as well, just to be safe."

Mikhail's belt unit bleeped with that annoying screeching beep that felt like dentist's probes attacking the inside of one's eardrums. "Justice Fetch," Caranium's voice crackled in Mikhail's's ear when he answered, "We're sending a Squadthopter to your location; Trapper's in charge in the chief's absence, and he wants to see both of you pronto."

"Understood, but have them take us to the old Malone mansion ruin," Mikhail answered. We have a rather useful ship there that we can use for our transport -- one I think Trapper'll want to see for himself." He turned to Mallory. "I like your idea, love," he said. "Maybe we can take care of two burglars with one barrel?" It was something he used to say when he was far younger, a whole life and world away from the present.

Dee cursed inwardly and hit his comm button "I want ships in the air now!!  All of them.  Active our entire ground to aIr defense networK and wait for my prder to fire. If the pursuers cross imto our airspace i want you to blow those bastards right straight to hell." Turning to Lucretia he calmly smiled and said "let's roll out the welcome mat shall we my dear? "?

Meanwhile Marshall and Agnes were halfway through there second bottle.  Blissfully unaware of the happening outside.

"Being strong is important isn't it?" Mallory said wonderingly.  "The ship was always meant for you.  They were the last plans the Emerald Doctor ever made and their upgrades was suposed to show both houses what we could do." She looked out the window as they walked to the Squadthopter.  "This could have been our city a long time ago."

"Won't the idiots ever learn. You can't hold Progress City.  Perhaps take it for a while but never hold it.  Tell it what to do and you have a fight but convince it that it wants to do what it says and it will shoot you up like a rocket."    Lucretia scrambled every thing they had wishing Christian had not waited the wasp drones.  Now would be the perfect time for them.  "I have everything we have with wings out on the way.  Lets make very sure that no more yahoos try and run our racket."

The chief had her gun belt off and her com link tossed somewhere with her boots.  Her gun was on the table which was the closest she got to being unarmed.  Agnes was half wreathed in clove sented smoke,  She never ever smoked at the office but on nights like this when she did not have to shoulder the badge there were many indulgences she could have. It was like being another person, faceless and free.  "It has been one hell of a year Marshall.  Sometimes I wonder If I am getting to old for all of this."

Leopard made it within sight of the Island before her stern lofting array started playing up. "Sir, Progress City Tower, we have visual," the ensign on watch reported -- and then the ship lurched violently astern and to port as that quadrant's mechanical lofting, damaged in the fighting with Cockatriz, literally began to spew parts and debris from the outermost unit.

"Cut power to portward stern number three," the captain barked, "and tell engineering we need 6200 more RPM in the dynamo shaft to the others in the array to compensate for the loss." The ordered actions were taken, and the ship righted itself to a large degree as the Aetherman called in their first voice transmission -- but still she listed slightly to port sternwise.

"Progress City, this is Malone Fleet Frigate Leopard with Corporate Diplomatic Packet, we are inbound at 15 knots and suffering lofting loss; we are compensating, repeat, we are compensating for lofting loss, but need immediate berthing; we cannot stay aloft for pilot pickup or customs or proceed at any higher speed. Extensive damage to all ships systems, numerous casualties, over."

-------
The Tower and the squad 'thopter's pilot were amenable, and soon they were setting down in the ruined yet somehow manicured back courtyard of what was left of the old Mansion.servants and residents (such as remained) scurried out of the back doors of the house. "Well, Bless me, its Miss Mallory! Welcome home, darlin'-"  Fitzroy Malone rumbled in his basso voice, catching himself before he sobbed on the last syllable, and opening welcoming arms.

"Yea rookies today would shit their pants if they had to deal with the stuff we did on the streets.  Wouldn't even know their ass from their elbow in a giant robot fight and those used to be the least violent ways people would dual in the street."  Agnes laughed and leaned back in her chair.  "God remember the time that crazy barbershop owner chased four of the Tong halfway up the Emerald Tower?"

Mallory shook with emotion. "I remember you.  I realy remember.  Sam didn't make it all up."  It was a fear she hid inside her heart.  After so long in the blue light Mallory could be truely sure of nothing until she saw it for herself. She ran in to Fitzroy's arms.  "I missed you."

Fitzroy hugged his niece with all the fervor of a a loving uncle, then gently held her at arm's length, looking hwer up and down appraisingly, a rakish twinkle in his eyes. "I do believe that young love suits ye, Dear Mally darlin'." he said teasingly, then added, "Much's I'd prefer it, I'd imagine ye're not 'ere just to bait the old bear in 'is lair, eh? Come wi' me, an' you too, lad, it's good tae see you, though it's not been all 'at long, 'as it?" he said to Fetch.

"I wondered back then when ye Tong boys chased away them burglars for us, if ye could be 'oom ye looked loike, especially when I 'eard about Doc Otto an' all. This way, the both o' ye. I imagine ye'll want tae join that armada up there. Looks loik summaught's goin' on." He jabbed his thumb skyward as he led his way to the dank, winding stairwell  and down to the specially locked door. "And 'ere we be," he said, opening the door with a grand ushering gesture, as the hangar's lights came up, reflecting from the gold and polished wood carapace of the Golden Gun. Fitzroy flipped a large lever over toward the wall, and the ceiling overhead rotated apart in five curved, pie-shaped wedges revealing the open sky overhead.

For a moment Mallory paused looking proudly on her masterpiece then turned to Fetch smiling.  "I hope it still suits your tastes."  Then she turned to Fitzroy. "I would be honoured if you would join us on the maiden flight.  You remember me and most of them do not."

Agnes tried to blow a smoke ring but it never quite turned out right. "The city has spun so far in to the criminal it has come out the other side and is downright regulated most of the time."  And then all of the sudden the past had come back from the dead and the city was uneasy.  She could feel it in her bones now after so many years on the street.  "This might just be the calm before the storm tho."  She disliked that the outside force of Sam had been able to strike at her city and use the people she was suposed to protect as cannon fodder.

Fitzroy answered, "They might not r'member ye, but they know o' you. Your reputation precedes ya, m'dear. 'Twill be me pleasure tae accompany the two've ya."

Fetch was fully Mikhail in his admiration of the ship, with its weaponry which although fifty years old was still powerful enough to class her as a pocket first rate; the railguns and deathrays had been a hundred years ahead of their time, and were still years ahead of current designs; such had been the munitions prowess of the Progress City Malones of a half-century before. with her golden and polished mahogany works, she was a deadly golden vision, her wings and buoyancy arrays of a rakish, sleek design, more like an attack 'plane than an airship.

"She looks fast," He said, excitement and admiration filling his voice, all the inscrutability of the infamous tong assassin gone for the moment. "Can't wait to take her up."

"I think this will be a good beginning." Mallory felt a little thrill go up her spine it had been a long time since she had been above the city.  She walked up the gangplank and suddenly the door bristled with guns. "This is suposed to happen don't worry." Among the guns there was what looked like a door knocker in the shape of a dragon.  Mallory stuck her hand inside and winced as it snapped shut. "That part never gets any better." She said as the dragon released her hand and she popped a finger in her mouth to stop the bleeding. "It is a blood lock. That is why sham couldn't get it." She mumbled slightly as the bleeding stopped and she was good as new.  The guns rolled back and The door opened as a chime played. "Capitan Fetch you go first." Mallory said with a grin.

"'Captain,' eh"? Mikhail grinned. "Permission requested to come aboard!" he called into the ship.

"Permission granted," a familiar echoing, metallic voice from long ago answered. " 'Mind the low hatchway, sir."

Fetch checked his stride, and then chuckled., turning to Mallory. "So that's what became of that automaton pilot thing that your cousin built." he went on inside the ship and began examining the controls, and the armament arrays. "To my taste and more! You've thought of everything!" he exclaimed, like a kid in a particularly wonderful candy store.

---------------

Across town, Simmers watched in awe and Bullock in reminiscent fascination, as hundreds of gunships and corvettes rose up like flocks of metal birds and flying fish. Off to the East, three big LeCroix aerial men o' war rose like stately silver, many-finned wales, the fins waving slowly as they treaded the air as if treading water, though they were so large that bouyancy vanes alone could not have kept them up, no matter how madly they beat at the humid Island air. Bullock's logic gears whined and hummed audibly, just on the edge of hearing.

"You ok, Bull?" Simmers asked, concern in his voice.

"Yes, I seem to be. I think the gears' whine and the tight feeling in my speech bellows is pride and reminiscence," the former amusemnent park clown automaton answered. "They look so much like his Emerald Excellency's armada that it's almost as if I were there on the day of the Glorious Victory  once again."

Mallory glowed with pride.  "Well it was my masterpiece and the thing that was going to net me valedictorian before all of this happened.  Try a standing take off.  It has lifting rotors that should take us out as smooth as silk." She bounced a bit as more and more memories of the ship filtered back to her.  As much as Mallory wanted to hate Sam for using her the true memories hidden in his lies were the most precious things she had since the blue light.
