Smiling at Trapper, Marshall stuck his hand out with an ear to ear grin. "Trapper mien comrade.  Eet haf being to long. New years vasn't eet?  Jew threw me in da droonk tank fer being .... "he stumbled for the word in english. "Horny! Zat ees da vord. Ja horny vith a statue in seentral park. " several officers overhead this last statement and began syraining their ears. With his bifocals and black turtleneck, Marshall looked he was old enough to be Trapper's Father if someone had shoved a steroid pump up his ass.

The old man was built like a grizzly bear with almost as much hair. it had taken several men to wrestle his massive naked hairy form into the drunk tank. Several of said poor unfortunate bastards had needed intense therapy afterwards.

"Da i has told her for years to be putting More boot in asses.Vonce Darren let me to start training his men zey vipped right up into shape. nothing like tret of death to incourage ze discipline. Let us go see her" this last part coming out with unabashed excitement. It was no secret the old soviet bear had a thing for the Chief Justice.

Trapper chuckled at the memory. "Yeah, Morrisey's still got the shakes from that wink you gave 'im, and Morty's still tellin' Caranium how that arm hair stuck 'im in the leg. Carry doesn't believe 'im, o' course. Come on this way, if ya will." Trapper looked speculatively sideways up  at Marshall. "say, I don't mean t' imply anything, but do you wanna do the freight elevator this time? As I remember you had a hard time in the express unit." The express elevators were made for transporting lots of normal-height people, but were notorious for being a bit uncomfortable for people over six feet. The so-called "freight elevator" was actually the original lift, built on a scale to accommodate the Emerald Doctor's huge bodyguard automatons, and thus would be more comfortable for a person of Marshall's mass. He called the chief on his belt unit. "Marshall from the Lecroix organization's here with a work detail, wants to talk to you about it. We're on our way up now."
----------
At about the time that Fetch called his parents' residence, a note arrived in the creche of the Blue Dragon Tong's Exalted One. Jhia Li, White Lily Courtesan of the Tong, opened the note, which had arrived on a crimson silk pillow with an obsidian inset button in the center. She handed the note to Huang Lin Ho, the original Boss Huang's son and successor. "A note from the honored Shadow, Young Lord."

Quote
Beloved Friend and former liege lord Huang Lin Ho
In regard to your underling's note of the 22nd, I will be free to meet with you in the evening within Sixteen days time. Best regards and congratulations upon your majority, Old friend.

By the way, I have regained most or almost all of my former memory now. I now understand what you meant by what you said upon our last meeting. I concur.

Ever your Friend and Servant,
Ying Jingshin Mikhail Lecroix

Inscrutable as ever, yet still obviously pleased and tickled, Lin Ho folded the note and pocketed it in his waistcoat. He leaned down toward Li and said, "Jingshin of-The-Shadow returns to us upon the appointed night of the waning quarter moon. See that he is welcomed, given all honor, and given the information that we have promised him."  He added in a somber voice, "It is too bad that his former love did not survive the recent Night of Madness, after having sent him the missal from our hands," he said, referring to the massive mind control incident that had plagued the Justice Tower and the entire City. "Be certain to to allow him time and space to grieve. We may also be expecting his soon-to-be bride. Go now, and make the arrangements."

Li nodded once and clapped her hands three times, once upon rising and then twice upon reaching the door. Lin Ho rang the gong at his side as she neared the portal. It was a prearranged set of signals, which were set up in advance to happen precisely the way that they had just been performed; if the sequence were missed or other things not done in case of contingencies, whoever exited the door would be cut down instantly.

Vould have taught zat he got his ass shot by now." A twisted smile crossed Marshall's face in what could only be described as an "I'm up to something " expression.  "Is ze boy still arounD? Yvanova was so very careful with her next few words.  "Do you remember the dance I told you won your father's heart?" Una was watching feeling a fluttering nervousness she was only now beginning to understand.  She wanted him to be so very happy it almost hurt.

Lucretia laughed.  "I think I like her all ready. She must be a formidable lady to keep your grandpa in line. Andrew told me she was a dancer on a world tour when she caught The old man's eye."

Fetch stopped, and thought desperately; a very vague memory slowly came to the forefront. He and a beautiful woman who was older than him -- with a start he realized it was his mother -- were sitting in a a room that was all soft brown and gold tweeds and red velvets, siting on a ruby-red divan with polished, ornately-carved mahogany trim and legs, drinking whisky-laden tea from stein-like mugs with handles in the shape of long-trunked elephants, a steaming elephant-figure teapot on the table in front of the divan. His mother was talking about how she had won her father's attention and heart, how she caught his attention with a dance of Spanish fans, and how they had danced that night -- and many others -- into the rosy morning.

"That-That was the Spanish Fan Dance, and then..." he paused, for a moment, remembering his mother sighing and rising to her feet and acting out the moves of a certain Latin form... "the Tango! But you both liked the Foxtrot, I remember, and that Irish thing, Carry Pilko -- no, the Kerry Polka! And those jazz dances." He rubbed his head absently. "Most of my memory's back, Mom, but some of it's still hazy." But I no, I remember, it was the racy Fan Dance and the Tango, now." Tears came into his eyes. I missed you Mom. Most of the time I didn't even know or remember who you were, but I always saw your face, and wished I could remember where you were waiting."

Old Russian's a card an' a half, Trapper caught himself thinking. "If only it were legal to do that with some of the tyros we've picked up th' last couple o' years," he said aloud, half-wistful and half-growling. "The recent crapstorms've weeded out most of th' goldbricks and dumbasses, but there're still a few people with their heads up their respective posteriors who could use wakin' up," he mused to the world at large as they rode the freight elevator to the Chief's floor.

In the first few years after his departure there had been many claiming to be the Le Crox son come home and each one had broken his mother's heart a little more. "My Baby. My little Mikhai. You came back after all this time." There were quiet sobs on the other end of the line.

Una took Fetch's hand beaming. "I told you you could be happy and cry at the same time."

Mikhail squeezed Mallory's hand, and then pulled her close into an embrace. "Mom? This is Mallory. Here, Mal," he said, pulling her close and holding the phone's speaker to both their ears, "This is Mom. Do you remember each other?"

-----------
A man in a grey wool houndstooth suit paced back and forth in an office in downtown New York City. His surname being Malone, and being a relative, once removed, of the previous kingpin, he was upon that person's demise (reported as a hot item in the Times newspaper and upon the stock ticker that perpetually clacked away in his office),  de facto the executor for the running and affairs of that person's estate. Recent reports of questions being asked by various agents both familiar to the Malones of New York and not, all turning out to eventually originate from Progress City had been piling up, and it had become obvious that something big and violent was beginning to develop. Having seen and picked up the pieces after several similar incidents in the states, This serious-faced Malone was determined that such should not have to happen yet again.

No fool, bent on dominion or revenge, was PutneyMalone, but rather a level-headed legal type, determined to survive, and hopefully keep his family from being annihilated.  He knew that the Malones of America and the Lecroix of Progress City would both benefit from a merger, instead of a gang war. He also knew that although one Mikhail Lecroix and Mallory Malone of that Island stronghold of nefariousness were not actually officers of their respective family companies, Mallory (who in absentia did in fact represent the Malone Holdings of Progress city) and Mikhail Lecroix (who was both the son of the Patriarch of the family and the long-lost uncle of Darren Lecroix, the current Head of the Lecroix family business) were rumored very strongly to be planning to marry. That fact gave him an idea which might well save both families...

He suggested, in the letter that he even now was dictating to his stenography clerk to Darren LeCroix, to be delivered as "Urgent" by Black Tube Parcel,

Quote
Why not merge our two family enterprises? My late cousin was a bit of an eccentric, and no doubt has incensed you and yours to the point of hostile takeover. That would only cause enmity between us, and though we would be severely mauled, no doubt, in any attempt at reprisal, rest assured that while I personally bear you no grudge whatsoever, others of my side of the family (for we are destined, I hear, soon to be all one large family group whether we wish it or not), will assuredly take action should you go ahead with the invasion which our sources on the street have told us that you seem to be putting out feelers for.

Instead of hostilities, which would cause damage to both our respective asset and resource bases, why not merge and build together, instead? I have little understanding of the recreational pharmaceutical trade beyond the legal side of keeping it running and it's principal officers out of prison, or keeping the imprisoned ones well-informed and cared for, so naturally it would be advantageous to have someone like yourself or your representative in general charge. Shall we meet and discuss the matter peacefully?

The letter was transcribed, enveloped, and sent; it arrived unbelievably quickly at the Lecroix  Tower, and was carried to Dee's Floor by an in-house courier, who handed it to Clarice, the receptionist.

"Anna, will you please take this and find Mr. Dee? do whatever it takes to get his or Lucretia's attention, tell them specifically that it is from a Mr. Putney Malone, Attorney at Law, of New York, New York."

It took a while; the pair had gone elsewhere ion the elevator, and although the Mailroom would hve seemed to have been indicated as their likely destination to her mind, Anna actually finally found them in a conference room on the floor above. She knocked on the cracked-open door, saying, "Mr. Dee? Miss Lucretia? It's me, Anna, Clarice sent me to find you. A letter from a Mr. Putney Malone, a lawyer in New York, has arrived by Black Tube Parcel for you, sir. It's marked 'Urgent,' Sir."

Frowning at the thought of a Malone having black line tube mail access to him, Dee cut the letter open and read It slowly outloud. When he finished reading he looked to lucretia and said. "well little dove, seems like we found an answer to our problem. This would save a lot of money and make us even more. We'll have to call our advance team antell them to double back though. Have them secure the underground station where i killed sam. Dont ya think?"

Mallory felt an odd wave of emotion crash over her.  "I am so sorry."  She started to cry.  "I thought he was seeing someone behind my back and got angry,  The people who didn't want us together got out of hand and I couldn't stop it. and they..." She held him close unable to speak.

"Yes I don't want anything sneaking up on us again and that land is unclaimed and I see no reason it can't be ours. We could corner the storage market with little effort."  Lucretia thought for a moment. "We must have some of our best transplanted in new york but we also need to check out California because that is how slippery Sam made it on to our shores and your Aunt Maria has her hands full dealing with the Mexican cartels horning in on her place."

Dee looked at her quizzically "now how do you know all this stuff and I don't??" he stopped as if the answer was the most obvious thing in the world. "  Oh right because it's your job" he chuckled "you really do have a far reaching information network don't you?"

Pulling up a map, Dee lit a Large cigar and puffed on it idely, the laz infused tobacco Burning with an eerie blue glow. He'd had to come up with alternate means of sating his addiction. It didnt look right when the head of a major corporation was shooting up daily like a common junkie.
He stared quietly At the map, before he spoke. "We cant fight a war on two fronts which despite Mr Malones assistance would be exactly what we's be doing financially. I dont have enough information to makE an informed decision yet but i have an idea. Send a reply to Malone. Tell him i want to meet. But he comes to us. Then i want a total tally on available men , equipment, available money and estimates on what a venture in California and New York is going to cost us. "

Lucretia puffed with pride a bit, "Us secretaries have to stick together and your aunt is an alumni from way back." She typed the letter out on company letterhead to look more professional. "We should see if the Malones have any resources locally we can add to the pot.  I am sure I could convince Una to lend a hand."

"She is too innocent. Without someone watching out for her the city would eat her alive.  The purple lads alone would have had her hooked and making them bank by now.  This city has one hell of an appetite for people." Lucretia had almost had something like that happen to her when she first arrived. Thank goodness the secretaries union was so powerful or she might have ended up in a very different place.

In New York, the Malone Family Skyrigger (a type of airship that operated via stored and steam-generated voltage, as well as gauss collected from the air that it passed through, and kept itself aloft via a complex EM Mechanical lofting system)was already being outfitted and manned for the flight to Progress City. The Golden Fleece was a palace of the air, yes, but it was also very heavily armed with both conventional artillery and with terrors of modern 'scientific' destructiveness. Only a handful of the aerial battlewagons of the world were capable even of trading equal broadsides with her, not to mention having any chance of defeating the gigantic ship in ship-to-ship combat. Her escort sortie was composed of several gunships and the Leopard, a fast, frigate-class airship that also utilized the same mechanical lofting system.

Putney had insisted that they begin assembling the small fleet immediately without waiting to see if the Lecroix head would agree to the merger proposal; he had initially insisted upon the Fleece making the journey alone, but other family officers had insisted upon the escort, saying that he and the Fleece were too valuable to risk so brazenly. In the end, he had relented, sullenly.
-------------

In another air harbor in Mexico, another ship was being readied, with a rather more sinister goal in mind; the dark-painted, shark-like form buzzed in its berth like a thousand giant angry bees from the forests of Hell. A figure in a light blue uniform and greatcoat stood at the rail surrounding the platform that overlooked the sinister-looking ship's berth, and grinned a very unpleasant grin indeed.

"Soon, Senor Malone, very soon, you will feel our wrath. It is time that we, not the Malones or the Lecroix, ruled the skies and the land...
---------------

Shhh, it's all right, Mal, you can't be expected to hold back the whole world all alone, Mikhail said as he held her close and kissed her, despite the closeness of the telephone receiver. "No one can. Right, Mom? Besides, that's my job," he joked.

She had never thought any girl was good enough for her baby boy but hearing the love in his voice made her have second thoughts. "You take good care of my boy and come visit some time.  We have a real beach here not like that piddly collection of pylons you have."

Agnes was smiling after a particularly good negotiation to yet again repair the justice tower. "Gentlemen I hope this is a social visit because I don't think I can scrape together a muster for another battle." The last one had left almost 80 officers injured or dead and she did not have the numbers to stand right now.

"I don't have any connections in Mexico, South America sure but not Mexico." Lucretia frowned she was not happy to find a gap in her networks. That would have to be fixed.

Among the crew and personal bodyguard assembling aboard the Fleece was a figure of a fellow, a well-muscled, yet oddly unremarkable sort who inspired little in the way of remembrance. Jeremiah Jones was what he called himself, a rather noticeable name, but that in itself seemed to make it obvious that he was not in any way really remarkable. as oppose dto someone like Fetch, he was actually very similar, but via a different source of stealth; he just simply did not attract attention, and kept to the Galley and his rotation on deck maintenance duty. It was for that reason that he became, long before Putney boarded the ship, one of teh Family head's personal service staff.

As the ship lifted it's keel, Jeremiah did his part in the preparation of the noon meal, scheduled to be served over the vista of tthe southern Adirondacks before the sortie was scheduled to turn south-southwest. As the scraps hatch showed the peaks below, the galley crew paused to watch a school of  petty-kraken 'poof' themselves past the tiny fleet, taking air into their mouths and expelling the exhausted mixture from their gill siphons after removing the hydrogen for their inflated hoods, to disappear into a nearby cloudbank. While his mates were thus enthralled and distracted, he slipped a small paring knife into his trousers pocket, the first of many such pilferings that he would need to make in order to accomplish his mission...
--------------
Meanwhile, In Mexico, the sharklike battlewagon rose from her cradle and shot away into the far Northward sky, The Blue-coated man standing at the command rail before the windscreen on the craft's bridge, a cold yet fierce grin upon his face. Soon, Senores Malone y Lecroix, soon....

--------------
"Why don't we come and visit this weekend?" Mikhail said, looking at Mallory. "Mom, regarding weddings..."

Yvanova laughed. "I knew that was coming. You had better do it up right because most of the family will want to come.  If there is anything we love more than money it is a proper party."

"You know what If you give me enough steak and whiskey I may take you up on that. If I can get away from the office without it exploding for an evening." Agnes needed a brake.

Lucretia started writing "We should also send your grandmother a thank you note." She wanted to get off on the right foot with the matriarch of the clan.

'We'll watch the place while you two go and take care o' business,' Trapper said. The Bosslady could use a bit of offtime, he thought.
-----
"We'll will have to invite the head people of every bunch I've worked for, of course." Fetch grew a little serious for a moment. The Huangs and Blue Dragons have kind of a wild reputation, but they're good folks." He paused. "But let's save all that for the weekend. Um...Mom?" He began, serious again. "I...uhm." He was uncomfortable, and not really sure how to say what was on his mind. "The vats, they... what I mean is, I don't look exactly the same. Something happened when Otto, you remember old Otto, the puppeteer, right? Well, when he put me back together and brought me back after I died on the table a few times, he used vat tech, and other more...arcane... methods. My eyes look Chinese, Mom, and There're some other strange bits as well, but I swear, I'm the same inside, almost," he  finished, somewhat lamely. "I'm still me."

"I like her more and more. I did take a two month course in proper correspondence. Your father wanted me to pen very elegant and formal death threats." In this city a skill like that was worth its weight in gold.

"Lets make an evening of it then. Just don't try and drink me under the table. Many a jr justice has tried and failed.  Trapper I leave the city in your care. hopefully it is still too banged up to do anything more crazy than normal."

It was over the border country between the Colorado and New Mexico territories, an area of the San Juan Range known as El Rio De Las Animas Perdidas, literally The River Of Lost Souls, that the shark-like Mexican battlewagon met the Malone Family Diplomatic sortie for the first time. Due to an error in navigation and a thunderstorm high up over the timberline, The Mexican ship did not see the sortie until it was already nearly out of pursuit range. She came on, however, and by early morning of the next day, she had caught up over the Utah Territory, just at the Northern edge the Great Salt Lake, the Fleece and her escort having veered South by Southwest during the night.

A spotter aboard Leopard reported a large military-appearing vessel to their immediate stern as it emerged at what appeared to be flank speed from a cloudbank directly behind the sortie, they having just passed through same. At eight o'clock AM, the Mexican ship, which broke out her colors - those of the Mexican Manas des Negras syndicate - and flipped back the tarpaulin concealing her name (Cocatriz) and particulars, opened fire with rockets and the ten-inch gatlings mounted in her prow. First, three gunships went down in flames amid the reports of burning and detonating ammunition, and then the Golden Fleece was holed in her stern galleries by two rockets and three shells, all of which exploded deep inside the gigantic ship's innards.Leopard, in a gallant show of her captain's loyalty and prowess, interposed herself between the Fleece and their attacker, responding with a hellish continuous broadside barrage of conventional guns, rail projectors and Teslaic lightning guns. Half the remaining gunships joined Leopard and began making strafing runs at Cocatriz, raking her sides, top and keel with fire that should have devastated a normal aerial battleship.

Cocatriz was holed twice, in fact, but her compartmentalized design proved to be her savior, and her wounds proved to be superficial at worst as the captain and crew rallied and the gunships began falling like fumigated flies. A lucky rocket shot to Leopard's port propulsion array, and the gallant frigate was left adrift as Cocatriz forged on after the Golden Fleece. There thus began a long, fast-paced running battle in which teh fleece zig-zagged and fired broadside after ob;lique broadside, into the pursuing Mexican ship, her gunship escort falling away destroyed early on, all but one six-gunner whose crew kept pulling off incredible feats of navigation and airkeeping, as well as artillery strikes against the enemy, all while eveading or turning aside everything that Cocatriz threw at her. 'The Flea,' as  the Fleece's crew began to affectionately refer to her, stuck doggedly on beside the larger ship, like a baby airwhale to its mother.

But finally, it became too much, out over California's Pacific coast. "Captain," Putney said, his arm in a sling; the first rocket had caught him in the midst of the morning's business dealings, which he was conducting via Morse code over the Aetheradio. The news of Lecroix's agreement to meet and discuss the merger came in that same fashion just before the attack, and no doubt influenced his decision. He had responded even as his arm dangled uselessly at his side and the other hand tapped out the message, Received and understood. Be advised, Golden Fleece is Under attack. Repeat, we are under attack location Great Salt Lake."

"Captain," Putney said later on the bridge,"We cannot afford to let a behemoth like Cocatriz loose on our new prospective allies, and we cannot seem to shake the bastards either. We must turn at bay and fight."

Thus began a duel, within sight of Santa Catalina Island, that would become a nine-days wonder in the Sacramento Newspapers...

"Can we come Saturday, tomorrow night?" Mikhail asked eagerly. Turning to Mallory, he asked, "Is that alright for you, love?"

------------
"You two go have fun ... and such," Trapper said, winking. I'll have Chalky bring me up a sandwich from across the street. Anything that crawls out of the woodwork'd better be armored for it's own sake."

Malory was excited.  "The last time I was at the beach I was very small. I remember the waves." The memory was like a ray of sunlight in her mind. I want ti go."

Agnes gave Trapper a salute and a smile.  "Get those new grunts cleaning a.d on bar duty. If I am not back by seven am send a pose with coffee." She turned to Marshall and offered her arm. "Shall we?"
