Una smiled it was taking effort but her brain was moving faster and faster.  "So we need to go up." She paused for a moment to let more of the memory fragments flow together.  "What we need are stairs which are unfortunately in the room with the monster but there should be a weapons locker at the end of the hall.  We might have to bust the door but it will be a lot better than than taking them on with what we have now."

Quietly she crept along not wanting to attract the attention of the monster at the end of the hall. She felt better once she was beyond the big doors and out of sight.  "See the guards would talk a lot and they treated us like we couldn't understand what they were saying,"  The weapons locker was a sturdy looking metal door with a combination lock instead of a keyhole.  "They said the code was easy like what an idiot would have on his luggage but I don't know what they meant by that."

" 'More the merrier, I always say!" Trapper shouted as he shot three lesser machine-beings though with the blaster, then four human lackeys who tried to hose him down with lead with what looked like wind-up portable gatling guns. He took one of the gatlings, wound it back up tight, and then stooped again, barely ducking a rifle round from a sniper high up in the basement's farters, and grabbed another dead fellow's revolver, straightened up, and wing-shot the sniper out of his perch with a single shot. The sudden lull, while welcome, was however also ominous somehow.

"Okay, it can't be that easy," Trapper Jack asserted warily. He looked around at the carnage they had just wrought. "All deaders?" he said, disappointed. "Damn! We need prisoners...."

"I think the guy in the monkey suit is alive.  Beat half to hell but alive." Jessica was wishing she had a wet washcloth right about now because sweat was rolling down her neck.  No 7 needed some more ventilation.  "I think it keeps going down from here.  Do we have a cleaner crew coming after we take care of the goons because there is a whole office full of important looking paperwork I tossed the monkey in to."

"Cleaner crew?" Trapper looked dubious. "Not that I know of, the chief just said 'get in, go deep, get prisoners, find out whats going on.' I rather doubt we'll be able to make  enough of a dent in the Delacroix machine with this raid to warrant sending in even a buncha harness bulls." he looked around. "though if I could find the central power core I could do some major damage..."

"That might be a good idea."  Jessica carefully dragging the monkey man out and tossing him to the boys to extract the person inside.  "These are plans like the chief had only..."  She paused looking at the plans.  "Damn this is a monster making factory.  I didn't think here could be something like this under our noses.  It looks like this floor is mainly offices but the next floor is armour making, then monster training and all the bottom says is raw processing. None of that sounds good."

Raw processing... Ugly memories of the bad old days of his former employment as a lackey came to the forefront at the mention of that term.

The Old Man had not been the worst of the city's warlords, far from it in fact, but many of his methods were disquietingly similar to those of the main movers and shakers of the time. "Raw Processing" tended to mean everything from cataloguing new recruits and test subjects, to using failed examples of same as fuel, and worse. Much, much worse. The extraction of human energy from a subject for powering a stronghold's systems and defenses was not generally accepted even back then, but it was much more common than anyone liked to admit -- and the kind of machine that the team was currently extracting potential interrogation subjects from was a direct permutation of that accursed technology. Worse things still were noised about to have gone on in the Black Labs of the Old Gangs, even to the point of breeding a new subspecies of human specially designed to serve as fuel and/or a source of genetically bred loyal laborers; some dark-minded rumor mongers even suggested that those alleged "bred people," were literally bread people, beings raised like cattle for processing into food as well as those purposes already mentioned.

"Raw Processing." Jack spat the term out of his mouth as if it were a piece of spoiled meat. "If they're doing what that used to mean, a gang of harness bulls is the least of what we ought to send in. Unfortunately, that's where the main power core'll be, most likely..."

Jessica was rather glad they couldn't see the shudder that crawled down her spine.  The stories she had been told has a child were bringing back the old monsters that made her hide under the covers at night.  "It looks like the only stairs are built in to the wall and seal in a breech by flooding with water. So blasting the hatches is the safest way we have. The only problem is when we get to the bottom it looks like we land in a monster holding pen. Looks like we go in guns blazing." She was very glad to have a metal hide to protect her but she wondered if the poor retches they kept dragging out of their armour felt the same way.  They came out pale and wet with a strange sort of madness in their eyes that made her nervous.  What had they seen below to make them like this?

"Well, that last hatch was a bit extreme, so if I cut it down to small latch-busting charges, I should have enough to get through, to the bottom, but be warned: like those papers show, it usually gets worse as we descend. It could turn out to be mundane monsters and trigger-happy bravos, or it could be as bad as the stuff I've seen before, and  what you younkers' mums scared you to sleep with when you was li'l tykes." He considered a moment. "The hatches below this one could be better fortified, all the way to being guarded by gun turrets or worse, accordin' to what the Old Man used to tell me, er... before..." he winged slightly, remembering that he had not always been a "bright champion of justice" as the dime novelists tended to paint the Justices these days.

A lot of the darkness that made him such a formidable Justice (according to others opinions; he tended to keep his "prowess" and fame 'at arm's length,' so to speak) had been grained into him in his stint as a favored minion of a Lord of assassins...

"I should go first then.  If there are turrets I can withstand some fire and then clear the way for you."  This sort of fight was exactly why she joined the Justices.  Her all clad in steel taking out monsters and making the city she loved safer.  It was a good job.

Trying to hide the expression on his face, Dee leaned forward and rotated it 1-2-3-4-5. Before the girl could comment he cut her off with a "Don't ask, keep moving" because he didn't feel like explaining he had the same combination on his luggage. He made a mental note to change it the first chance he got. The locker held a bevy of death dealers and otherwise unpleasant items. Taking a brace of pistols, he shoved them through his belt and pocketed a handful of magazines and couple grenades. A familiar shape caught his eye and he began to leer like a dirt old man at a wet tshirt contest. Grabbing the big Browning, he slammed a mag in it and racked the charging handle. Designed solely for military use, it had a relatively low rate of fire for a fully automatic weapon but the massive payload that it spat out more than made up for its low fire rate. Someone had cut the barrel down on this one to make it easier to handle, and the heavy wooden stocks had been replaced with some kind of light weight steel reinforced polymer to cut weight even more. He handed the girl a Saturday night special and asked "can you use this?"

The gun felt oddly at home in her hand.  She could comforably hold it and she found her body eazeing in to a shooting stance.  Things felt good for once. She held out her hand with a grin. "I am called Una I think

Taking the girls proffered hand, he introduced himself simply as Dee. "Now that we're armed, if not armored, lets get the hell out of here. I don't relish sitting around while there's something big going on." The truth was the dank and dismal air of the holding cells was starting to grate on his nerves and he didn't want to be here one moment longer than necessary. "watch my ass and keep your head down. If there's shooting just take cover unless you think you've got a shot."

Trapper looked the Tank up and down, trying to imagine where it ended and Jessica began. Giving up on that, he said, "Right, then. Same drill as before, hang on the lines 'til the doors blow, then descend blasting away at anything that moves or gets aggressive. But remember to leave some for prisoners -- actually, scratch that, we have all the tyros we need, and we can't save everybody. Blast everybody but leadership types. Let's try for a strawboss or better, shall we?"

"When're ya gonna use that big honkin' 'hawk, boss?" Will jibed.

"When I need to or feel like it, kid," Trapper said laconically, as he set the charges. These doors had a larger gap between the doors; looking down through the crack, he could see what looked like a holding pen for cattle. Something about the livestock far below bothered him, though; They didn't look quite right... He lit the fuses, and sprang back to his line and clipped on.

As they rounded a corner, two men came running through a door and right past the two fugitives. Not waiting for them to realize their mistake, Dee brought the big browning up and fired twice. The 180 grain slug ripping holes through both the fleeing men, moments before an explosion rocked the base. "What the hell was that?" he hollered, trying in vain to clear the ringing from his ears brought on by firing a large gun in small quarters.

Jessica grappled down as the pen exploded in to motion.  There were metal looking beasts that unfolded has they stood in to nightmare shapes with spindly claw tipped limbs while others skittered away half formed and scared. "Be careful boys it looks like we have a stampede" She said as she dropped from above.

Una moved in to cover Dee's back as the ground under their feet shook. "I don't know but we had better get out of here before the roof falls in."

At the end of the hall there was a scared metal door with a window of thick glass and a heavy latch.  "The stairs should be on the other side of that room but that is where they put the monsters.  Everyone ends up there after the blue light eats them up."  Una shuddered scared of the dark shadows moving inside.

"Sounds like a good place to normally avoid, but if that's where the stairs are, that's where we're going." Pulling the magazine from the BAR, he thumbed two shells to replace the one's he'd fired and locked it back in place. Handing her the big .45 he'd shoved through his belt, he told her "If it moves and it ain't me, shoot it." Pulling a grenade from his pocket, he primed it and stood to the side of the door, gesturing for her to do the same "on the count of three, pull the latch, throw the door open as wide as you can and cover your ears. This is gonna be loud. "

"Ready?"

"1...2..."

She quickly threw the latch and moved to be covered by the opening door.  Inside the room smelled bad part slightly rancid butcher shop, part livestock and machine shop.  Just inside the door there was a metal demon that was missing an arm.  It howled and started charging at the open door.

Something told Trapper that this was the end of the line. Maybe it wasn't the very bottom, or maybe it was, but the power core was here, he was sure of it. There was also something else. Maybe it was just Dame Fate kicking him in the head, or maybe it was some latent psychic knack, but the old feeling he'd gotten around His old master's Soul Eater apparatus suddenly kicked in, only this feeling was as if the machine was on but had suddenly experienced a reduction in fuel; that happened sometimes when a drain subject proved to be especially resilient or rebellious and managed to break the system's hold, or there was some kind of in-feed malfunction in the Extraction Assembly. So, they DO have one o' those here, he thought grimly. Whatever caused the feeling of finality, Trapper let his hand fall to the aether comm unit on his belt and punch in the rescue code  and jab the tab to send the message to Ariadne. Far above, the ornithopter spread it's condor wings and dove from the spire of the bank building like a graceful thunderbolt, shining gold and silver in the first rays of dawn. The main cannon and eye and waist maxims poured fire into the spire of the  Delacroix Station below, blasting a wide hole in the security doors of the entry bay, and smashing through, scattering the few guards who had so far recovered and bowling over am armored car that had belatedly been deployed to the scene. With her klaxon blaring in a surprisingly animistic way as the condor wings folded, she shot down the elevator shaft like a fallen angel, and then deployed the Wasp wings, hovering just above the final door and adding her own fire  on the monsters below, as directed by Trapper via the comm unit.

Below, he saw a sight to chill the blood: what seemed a young girl, perhaps in her teens or slightly older, crept across the livestock pen toward what looked like an exit - only to be confronted by a wounded machine-beast that looked too out of it to be anything other than murderously psychotic. As it raised its good limb to take a swipe at her and her escort, and the girl raised what looked like a small semiauto pistol,  Trapper wrenched his thumb up and flicked the ranging and power  wheels on the exciter carbine, dropped it down again to take a swipe at the rapid-fire lever, and then gripped the pistol grip and squeezed the trigger. No tracer-like bolts of fire rained down, but the creature's head exploded like a gunshot watermelon as its chest and right hand torso did likewise, the multiple almost-simultaneous exciter impacts flash-boiling and flash-frying the circuits and cyborg flesh instantaneously, while the metal walls and mouldings flashed to ruby redness from the induction of their molecules from the exciter beams. The door the pair were making for sagged under its own suddenly near-molten weight and fell away to one side.

Will ducked out of the doorway, trained both pistols on the pair. "Progress City Justices! Put yer guns down, if you will, please, I can drill you both before you raise yours to aim." He looked them up and down, then, noticing a few things he'd seen only once before. "Bluelighters, I'll bet. Well, rescue or not, put your weapons on the floor and come with me."

Una froze clutching the gun like it was a life line. For a moment she debated firing and running away but she realized she had nowhere to go and they had a giant robot. Knowing she was truly stuck she dropped the gun. Una was distrustful these people had huge weapons and they were ripping her little world apart.  It was a bad world but it was what she understood.  Then again they weren't mowing her down so maybe it wall going to be better.  She took a few steps forward avoiding the melted metal with her bare feet.  Heart thumping in her chest she walked up to Will hoping she had made the right choice.  "I am Una and I give up."
