Will kept kicking the cabin wall evenm as he held on while Trapper swooped above the city on the way to the Hall of Justice. "I just can't believe he's gone," Luke kept saying in low, oddly composed voice. "It's like I can see him in a blur ove rthere by the jump door, he muttered.

"Mister von Trappe, who are they talking about?" Fetch's voice said form a position that would place the source in back of his right elbow, up against the cockpit bulkhead.

Trapper nearly jumped out of his skin and narrowly missed slamming onto the finial atop the Misaguchi Financial Group's Tower. "FETCH!? You're ALIVE!?"

"Damn Sir we made it out all right. Not bad for a first day out."   There was angry flashing lights from the Misaguchi tower.  "Oof sir looks like they are not happy.  The chief may be getting some tube mail from them."

"Tube mail?" Una wondered looking out at the city.  It was huge and seamed to go on forever. What sort of world was this?

Dee had fallen asleep sometime shortly after Christian told what he knew and missed everything that followed until someone kicked his leg to wake him up.

Una turned to Dee slightly worried and whispered in his ear. "These justices are generally thought of as good, so they aren't going to turn robots like the one below right? Because that idiot tried it before and it realy hurt."  She was fairly sure without the blue light numbing her during the operation she might have died from stress and shock.

"Of course, Sergeant von Trappe, Sir," Fetch answered, apparently perplexed by von Trappe's extreme surprise. "I'm rather hard to kill, sir. Many have tried." While this was nearly the longest statement Fetch had uttered since he had met the fellow, Trapper noticed that it didn't sound as idf he were insulted by the suggestion that he might have been killed, nut rather intrigued by the possibility, almost as if it were an interesting 'thought experiment,' as his Justice Boot Camp C.O. would have put it.

"Will turned to Una and said, "You don't know what Tube Mail is?" sounding positively shocked. Was this girl some hapless hick that somebody stole form a passenger boat on the coast or something? "It's, uh, you know, mail that is sent in a capsule through the Tube Transit system. Companies and bigwigs use it instead of couriers; it's faster. They're talking about starting a bulk rate for middle and lower income people, but they haven't done it yet." Where was this slip of a girl raised, anyway? "Where are you from , miss... Una, is it?"

Luke rolled his eyes. His brother would try to chat up a detainee...

She thought quite intencly for a moment but she couldn't get back any farther than being attacked in what she guessed was her bedroom.  Una was sure that was before because she didn't have the blue mark on her foot or the scars on her neck from the botched robot implants. "I was sleeping on a big bed done up all in white when a bunch of men dressed all in black burst in and we fought but they stabbed me with something and I fell asleep.  I don't rember where or when that was tho.  I am not even sure Una but that is what they tattoed on my foot well that and a string of numbers."  She showed him the spidery script that marked her has UNA2837.

Will looked at the script dubiously; Having never seen such in the flesh before, he was not sure what to make of it. It looked like it could be related to the markings reputed to once have been assigned to to the "human cattle" that he had learned about in the City's mandatory Basic Education System, but History had never been his strong suit.

Fetch was also intrigued by the tattoo. "Here, missy," He said, going solid suddenly (seeming to those who had not been paying close attention to his movements to have appeared out of thin air), and removing the boot and sock from is left foot. There, about three inches above the bump of the ankle, was tattooed a similar-looking number:
FTSCH 999L7666
"It is not the same, Little Missy. I would thus say that you are not of my late Master's vats. The similarity intrigues one, however."

Una blinked unsure of what to feel. Perhaps she was tank grown but what did that mean for her?  "Are their records of all of us somewhere?  I want to know where I came from."

"I was made of the stuff of The Black  Puppeteer's last batch of Vatstock; I am mentioned in the third Volume of the original  Craft Rolls." Those Rolls had become "suggestedly mandatory" after the First Interfamily Treaty of 1873. Will and Paul, as well as Trapper, stiffened at the mention of the 'Black Puppeteer.' Trapper mused to himself that the revelation explained some of Fetch's more apparently arcane ablities. They also realized that, given the name of his creator, Fetch might look youthful, but was in fact older than almost everyone else on board, save for Trapper himself.

Not all tankgrown subjects were required to have been enrolled, but insurance against loss or extreme trauma, as well as Experiment Failure & Vatminion Revolt compensation were monumentally expensive without enrollment (due to the resulting lack of documentation and thus reduced possibility of product tracking), so most complied with the "mandatory suggestion" policy of enrollment, though subjects grown as "artificial offspring" were often excluded from the Rolls in the early years before mutual compliance became the norm out of united self interest. The plethora of differing numbering and marking systems tended to make for a logistical nightmare, but also had the hidden benefit of making it easy to identify who made what - provided the relevant Roll could be located.

"I imagine we should get you processed at City Hall first, see what we can find out there," Wil interjected. " Whether you realize it or not, you might know something that will help us deal with the monster problems we've been having."

Fetch broke in again,  almost on top of Will's words; it was starting to look like the two might be competing for Una's attention. "City Hall keeps all of the records for Crafted Persons, save for the very newest ones whom have not yet been reported via the usual channels, or those ...concocted, let us say, in (ahem) less than proper situations."

Trapper looked back at the scene using one of the observation mirrors installed in and around the cockpit for just such purposes. He was getting a bit edgy, since the petite blonde girl was beginning to get treatment as if she were a guest rather than a detainee from a very suspicious and recondine crimescene. "WILL! FETCH!" he snapped, his voice striking like a whipcrack. "Stations, please, and stop fraternizing with the detainees! Miss Una, my apologies, but until HOJ says otherwise, you amnd Mr. Dee are crimescene detainees and must be handled as such at least until the questioning  action is completed. Everyone, Please quiet down and brace for arrival. Landing in fifteen seconds." Ariadne already was hovering above the Hall of Justice landing pads atop City Hall, a double cordon of harness bull guards in full suppression kit awaiting their arrival.

Fetch chose that moment to return to his usual alomost-not-thereness; it was as if he just simply vanished, to eyes not used to his ways.

Chief Thigpen looked at the tube mail on her desk and frowned.  The tower was gone so what would the retaliation be? It had belonged to Le Croix there was bound to be some reckoning for that.  They had better keep whatever came out of that place close to their chest until they knew which way the wind was blowing.

Una watched at Jessica eased her way in to a recharging station and wiggled out of No 7.  She pushed her hair from her eyes and mopped the sweat from her face glad to feel the breeze on her skin. "Oooof I have got to ramp up the ventilation in there.  I was stewing in my own juices."

Una was rather alarmed and blinked at Jessica.  "How does it move if she isn't linked?"

"Wait we are getting locked up again?" Una said with a frown.  "I haven't done any thing wrong hell I,,haven't done anything.  I was stuck in that dammed room for as long as I can rember and I am not letting you stick me under that blue light again!"  She started to struggle she had no idea how she would survive out there but anything was better than going back.

Jessica watched the scrawny blond panic and fight and went over to help Will with his armload. "We aren't going to drain you.  We are going to stop the bastards that are doing that!"

The Squad leader of the harness bulls saluted Trapper. "Constable-Corporal Wilson, sir. We're here to escort you and your detainees to the Hall" Wilson's voice and manner seemed slightly sarcastic; apparently he figured "detainees" was a fancy word for "prisoners." It was a fairly accurate assumption, von Trappe had to admit, but the fellow still irritated him, although he figured that was probably part of the fellow's job - to be irritating.

Trapper led the corporal over to Dee and Una. "these two are Una and Mr. Dee. They were in the facility's bluelight machine, but managed to escape, I gather, when we inserted ourselves. Let's put 'em in one of the Protective suites, guards at every door; preferably view of the atrium with an outside window on the city as well, but Scrim curtains and night floods on the exterior; we don't want people staring in at 'em. Also have 'em examined by the medical branch. They seem pretty normal, but best to be safe."

"Sir!" the corporal replied, and told off three guards to handle it. "The rest?"

"Medical Branch soonest, put 'em in Isolate observation, I'd think. They're pretty weird, most of them, all suit severance patients." He finally turned to Christian. "take," Trapper's voice turned sour, This to interrogation and put 'im in a High-security Solitary. He's a Le Croix

Una couldn't do much more than wiggle held between Jessica and Will.  Windows? They weren't putting her back in the ground or chaining her to a chair? She looked at Trapper and went still.  They were treating the poor robot pilots and not shooting them when they broke?  She looked up at Jessica wondering and Jessica smiled.  "See we aren't out to hurt you.  Well accept for Christian and somehow I don't think you mind if we rough him up a bit."

Una smiled that was a good idea, "We get actual food and not nutrient gruel right?"

"Yup i suggest you avoid the meat loaf tho all of us are pretty sure it is a failed experiment.  Now are you going to calm down?"

Una thought about this for a moment.  It couldn't hurt to take advantage of these justices while she tried to figure out who she was. "Ok I will go with you for now."  She was not entirely at ease but this was better than where she had been.

The medics dressed in long white coats and smelled of disinfectant but they were far more gentle than the ones that had opened up her back.  They poked at her, drew blood and spent a long time looking at her eyes with the little light.  Apparently the long exposure to the blue light had changed them a bit.  She was finger printed, photographed and measured.  Then given slippers and a simple set of clothes and put in to a room that was bland and tasteful with a bed and an attached bathroom. Una sat on the edge of the bed thinking.  Things were changing fast now.

The rest of the team were called in to a conference room.  Chief Thigpen was standing at the head of the table with a little smile. "So I here you netted me a a Le Croix."

The thug saw the thopter land and wondered how he could get in and out of there without being shot to pieces.  The wind picked up blowing a bit of paper in his face,  The thug broke out in a grin.  The robot battles finals were going to be held in two days to kick off the founder's day celebration.  The justices would be stretched thin and if he poked at just the right time crowds could become a riot.

The man looked out of the city.  The deliveries were still being made on time but very soon his clients would notice the drop in qualty and he would have to deal with things.  Not to mention the process was wasteful without the catalyst and eventually it would eat the profits.  Neither of these was a good outcome.  He had a week and that had to be enough time.

Trapper took the exciter rifle and blaster off as before and laid them on the table before him along with his tomahawk, prompting the rest of the justices to do the same with their weapons. "yes, Ma'am, Chief. He was skulkin' by as we were about to enter the bottom subbasement." His voice was light, slightly cocky.

"It was as bad as we feared," he added, dropping the jocularity. "A Black Lab,  All right, complete with a Bluelight machine that made Black Puppeteer's rig look small-time. The thing was a whole tri-level cellblock with a giant collection sphere." Trapper explained. Christian, our special little boy prisoner, didn't' want me to take this here blue ball, so I did. Trapper's attitude turned slightly sheepish, "Err... That's when the complex started to hum like angry bees and we all hightailed it outta there with the suit pilots and the rest. Justice Fetch said he found an old friend, by the way; surprised me so much when he turned up I almost hit a tower on the way back..."

"My creator," Fetch said, with an odd note of reverence in his voice.

Thigpen grimaced at the mention of blue light.  It was something nasty she had hoped had been eradicated.  "Damn you have been up to your ears in it again.  I will tell Misaguchi corp I have disciplined you. in two days time they will be two drunk to follow up much on that"  She smiled in amusement.  "Are any of the  detainees you brought in whole enough to go before the courts against Le Croix?"

"Una, the girl we got from the subbasement, keeps going on about the machine as if its all she knows," Trapper answered."She's lucid, almost amazingly so, but its as if she's been raised from inside the blasted bluelight, and has nevr known anything else. Mr. John Dee, who was with her when we picked upUna, is even more lucid, though he doesnt talk, much. I cant sayhow cooperative they'd be, that remains to be seen, byt Miss Una really deems to hateChristian."

"The female suit pilot also seems to have a quarrel with him, but the bluelight conditioning and being broken to the suit seem to have eroded her reason and her ability to distinguish him as an enemy. Even her speech, typically enough, is twisted. It might be possible to rehab her for the stand, but that could take a year or more."

The chief nodded perhaps they lucked out and finally had the dirt they needed. "We have to make rehabilitating the lucid ones a priority.  I want this in front of a judge asap before Le Croix lawyers can sweep this under the rug.  They know your team, you made first contact so I want you to check up on them.  You don't need to try and become their best friends just check up on them and make sure they have what they need.  I know with the Founders day coming up we are going to all be pulling extra hours but if we can keep scum like Christian off the streets it is worth a bit of sleep loss.  I want the best of our tech heads figuring out what that orb is and we will be keeping it under guard until we know."  The chief had been gunning for Le Croix ever since she graduated from the academy and this was the best shot she had.

Una had discovered showers and had spent the last half hour blissfully warm. She had not realised how cold it was underground. So far this new world was pretty nice. Sitting on the bed she found a pamphlet on rules and regulations near the pillows.  Much to her own surprise after looking at it for a moment she could figure out what the marks on the paper meant.  She was so transfixed on the words that she did not notice the guard knocking with food until he burst in to the room and found her wrapped in a pile of towels starring at the paper with a smile. This was an odd duck he thought as he set her try on the table.  "Food miss."

Una looked up. "Oh ok.  Do you have more things like this?" She waved the pamphlet at him.

He was baffled. "Is there something wrong with that one?'

"No but I know what it means and I want more." Una said "This thing says you have to take reasonable requests."

The guard was rather unsure what she wanted but he did not want her filing a complaint so he handed her a visitor's guide he had found on his round and had not thrown away yet. "Here miss." He hopped that would be the right thing to do. She stared reading like it was the most important thing in the world.  "You should eat before it gets cold miss."

Una sighed "Yes thanks."  The guard was happy to leave the room.  He was going to have to trick his buddy Charley in to taking this one over for him.  That girl gave him the creeps.

Trapper overheard the guard and his buddy talking as he approached the marble-topped duty desk in the hallway (such desks were located at regular intervals in the Custody Blocks, little nuclei of harness bulls and the occasional Justice checking on a subject). The guards here were well-armed, though surreptitiously so, and there was usually a small riot gatling or largebore rapidfire repeater gun stashed inside each desk under lock and key, just in case. Some had flashbang and concussion grenades as well. The Justices took "protective custody" very seriously.

"I'm tellin' ya, she's bleedin' 'round the bend, she is!"

"Hmmm. Sounds interesting all right," said a bull named Redmond, as he helped himself to a buttermilk biscuit and poured himself a cup of coffee. "Reddy" somewhat notoriously had a sort of hobby of observing strangely-behaved "guests."

"I'll get Charlie to --!" The speaker stopped suddenly, and another bull goosenecked his head around the corner, snatching it back when he saw Jack coming.

"Can it! 's Trapper Jack!" There followed the sound of wolfed biscuits and gulped coffee, followed by cups being stashed under the overhanging desk top and a sound as if a gas burner was being turned down low almost too quickly for safety. Trapper turned the corner to find a scene of such perfect peace officer-like appearance that it was obvious it had to be a put-up.

"Y'know," he said slowly and speculatively, "There's a school of thought says that a low-set burner is actually hotter'n one with the flames turned up." he looked each harness bull up and down, but did nothing such as flicking off dust or examining the brightness of insignia. "Be at ease, boys, he said finally, tiring of the old game. Dereliction I won't tolerate," he half-snapped, then continued in more relaxed tone, "but normal mealtimes are important too. Try to keep both ideas in mind, would you? Our Protected gursts are important or they wouldn't be here -- no matter how 'round the bend' they might appear to be," he said directly to Charlie.

"Carry on, boys."

-------------
Trapper came around the corner and stopped at the door, nodding to the guard.

"Begging your pardon, sir, but who are you?"

"it's me, Ted, von Trappe, remember?"

"I needs ter see your badge and paper, sir," the bull answered, eyes going wide with fear at the look on Trapper';s face. " 's orders, sir, 's worth me badge if I dasn't!"

"Right you are, Ted, Trapper finally said, showing the required documentation. He knocked ion the door as teh bull stepped to one side. "It's von Trappe, Miss Una, just a routine visit. May I come in?"

Una was sitting on the bed in her issues clothes her un-brushed hair ringing her head like dandelion fluff. "Yes welcome." She said remembering the words in the pamphlet.  "We are in Progress City right?  There is a picture of the hall of justice in this paper. I need more.  Mr. Trapper sir I need to know things, about this city and who or what I am.  I know you have a job to do.  I read it here.  To serve and protect. But I can help I remember a lot of what happened down there now."  She shuttered perhaps she remembered too much.  "But i don't know anything about myself. If I was made I want to know why, if I was stolen I want to know from who.  Can we make a deal?"

Like most of the city's inhabitants, there was within Jonathon Bertholdt von Trappe at the very least a grain or two of the nefarious facet of human nature. That is to say, he actually did consider making a "deal" of the pleasurable sort, so to speak. His senses of duty and propriety won out, however. "I think we can, Miss Una," he said. "The Justices have been trying to catch the Le Croix family at exactly the kind of thing that you were subjected to for several years; that Bluelight Device you were kept in's supposed to be illegal, but as you may be able to imagine,  "illegal" does not always equal "nonexistent" around these parts.

"I'll cut right to the point of the deal that we, th' Justices, would find the most agreeable: Would you be willing to name your captors and their crimes and sins against your person, before a court of law and jury of your peers, in exchange for help in finding the information you seek? I'll add that justice is the right of any citizen of Prosperity City, of course. The special bit of help that we would ask of you is your testimony against specifically Christian himself and broadly the Family Le Croix."

Trapper caught his breath while he waited for the girl's answer. That was by far the longest offer he'd made for such a thing in quite a long time.

Dee paced about impatiently, a cigarette he'd lifted off a passing officer hung from the side of his mouth, the sharp acrid smoke filling the room. His mind was running 100mph in first gear and he tried desperately to calm it.
