At the risk of sounding like a complete Noob, what exactly does the spam look like? All the links are understandably deadi-bones so I can't look at one to see what they look like? For example, is this Spam? It comes from the "eBay Merchant Hall of Acclaim and Recommendation" page. It is not a recommendation, but an eBay seller. Wrong place, or spam?

Here's an example:  [Now in post above this one - SS]

<Forum link deleted as message moved>

In this case, the .sig appears to link to some sort of character generator application, but actually links to an online casino.

So the spammers will be trying to get you to click on their link. The text was a little odd...

But I gotta go - apparently my brother (didn't know I had another one) has died in Africa and left me 25 million dollars. Just have to give the nice man from the Nigerian Government my banking details so he can send the money to me.

Only 25 million? That's a bit stingy from a brother who had cornered the market in ....?

It's more about having the link show up in search results because it's on a page that shows up in search results. Or something like that.

You often see so called "SEO" companies / experts advertising their skills on the internet, S E O Standing for "Search Engine Optimisation". What this means is that they (for a price) "guarantee" you a higher rank in search engine results- resulting links near the top of the search page are always the ones clicked on first...

What these "companies" don't tell you is that they employ a bunch of illicit computer bot-nets and / or people from low income countries to spam the crap out of ANY place on the internet that allows someone to post words - basically everything from the 'Comments' section of news websites, to social media, and forums such as ours. The more active the website is, the more it will be targeted by spammers.

By having their websites / product web-links plastered over as many other websites - especially social media platforms - as possible, these links will be counted each time a major search engine (Google, Bing etc) scans the website looking for content (keywords, pictures, etc) to base it's search results on.
Having your links seen on many different websites will make Google rank your website or product higher in the search results as it believes that it is "trending" or popular for some other reason.

All of this will bump them up the ranks, and thus more people click through to their website, and this results in a jump in profits - either from sales or paid-for advertising on the website (usually both).

Also, the number of spammers who get through as far as actually posting messages on the boards is as nothing compared to the number of spam accounts that get banned and deleted before you even see them.
