Is it just me or has there been an uptick in spammer activity lately? Feels like I've reported a dozen or so in the past week.

It's entirely possible that is the case. However, I do think that the fact that most of the UK based mods; in other words pretty much all of the mods (with the exception of Ms. Gaslight, J. Wilhem, Von Corax and The Corsair), are currently attending this year's Asylum gathering and so may not be able to wield their banhammers effectively.

I seen to be finding one new "I just wanted to say hi" spampost just about every day.
Its probably the same guy/robot each time, but it might just be because I've changed timezones recently and am on at an odd hour.

Well, they've been reported (and based on the number of "views" with no comments I'm surely not the only one to have reported the same posts), so they'll get to them when they get to them.

Same here. "I'm the new guy", "I just wanted to say hi", and other variations, and almost all of them with the same "product". I may be seeing more of them, like you, because I'm keeping weird hours (erratic sleep patterns due to medical issues).

Oh, well...We know they'll get picked off sooner or later.

I'm doing my best to deal with them, but it does seem another mod is active.

Seriously, I wasn't complaining, just observing.

But now I'm confused (I know, big surprise)...I thought the way spam "worked" around here was that it got posted, we reported it, and you guys and gals dealt with it. However, the comments by Madasasteamfish and Siliconous Skumins seem to imply that there's something you mods do that keeps a lot of them from even showing up in the first place.

If the latter is the case, then I apologize if my comments came across as annoyed or accusatory. I was merely intrigued by the apparent increase in spam, and pondering scenarios for the cause of this, such as, they had a conference or something and decided, "Alright, for this month we're going to focus our efforts on the following", with Brass Goggles being on that list.

No offence taken nor apology required. There has been an uptick in observable spammer activity, and we depend on the membership to spot the ones who slip through the outer defences.

When we catch a spammer we create a ban filter based on both the username and the email address of the attacker. This prevents that particular 'bot from reregistering and, since most bots necessarily use a single email address for several days at least, it also prevents reregistering under a different username.

We also see the IP address the spammer is using, and if we identify a particular address as problematic we can block all access from that IP address as well. We generally don't like to do this as it causes problems with large ISPs who recycle a small number of addresses among a large number of subscribers, but on occasion blocking a single IP address has made a significant difference in the number of successful spam registrations.

Finally, a few months ago proteus installed a plug-in which checks all new registration attempts against a publicly-accessible database of reported spammers; this too has made a huge difference in the number of spammers registering.

(There may be other administrative measures in place to which I, as a lowly Moderator, am not privy.)

Before the new Mods were anointed, Siliconius Skumins had taken upon himself the task of spam control and was finding it to be beyond a full-time endeavour; I believe we all owe him a debt of thanks (or a pint, at the very least) for his efforts.

Ah well my Dear Clym
since one of the films screwed the pooch jumped the shark removed the "mystery" by claiming all skills are based on the level of some dm'd bacteria, or mitocondria, or millichlorine, or some such nonsense, that throws the entire premise down the sewer!

As such, I reject that false reality and substitute my own based upon the premise that "The Force" is actually missnamed Chi
or Qi , and as such one is never to old for training - because the training automagically includes recognizing and rejecting tendencies towards emotion-based dark-sided-ness . And it includes beer and skittles :-) .

so there.

and btw , the spammishness is subsiding, thank you.
