Aquire tools as you need them, put money aside so you can buy what you need as you need it.
You can make a lot with very little if you adapt what you have.
Learn quality brands and don't be afraid of quality used tools.
Files are the only exception, they are often rusted clogged or just worn out.
I have some wonderful tools I would never be able to buy new, purchased from eBay, Craiglist, and yard sales and auctions.
Know your local scrap dealers the contacts will help with scavenging bits and equipment.

Invest in several note books and pencils
Sketching, scribbling, wrighting and drawing help a lot.
Fill pages every day.
