I'm not sure how many of you have already heard about this, but I sure hope they don't screw it up!!

http://www.themovieinsider.com/movies/mid/3500/20000_Leagues_Under_the_Sea

ByJ, Sam Raimi is producing, this could either be very good (umm.. just about all of his early work) or very bad (wasn't too hot on the americanized Grudge flicks).

It's kinda scary...Because if it's bad, every time you say the word's, "20,000 leagues under the sea" someone is going to say, "that movie sucked!". And then you will punch him.

Nay, I shall impale him upon the end of my walking stick!  Boxing is ungentlemanly.  Also, I believe that creating english sounding words from portions of true english words is ungentlemanly.  I suppose that as long as Bruce Campbell and Ted Raimi don't steal the show, then it should be fine.

i have no faith in Remakes.  From a creative standpoint, "remake" means, "We ran out of ideas."

Other than the last Willie Wonka film, I am stretched to find a remake of an old film that was worth its weight in DVD.

I have no problems being surprised, however.

Dawn of the Dead
The Ring (the first one)
The Thing
King Kong (but it was way longer than it needed to be)
Dracula (1992)

I think those were all pretty decent remakes. Nothing spectacular, but not bad.

Check this article out!!! Apparently the film will be set in 1867, while paying respect to the Disney film, and Verne's original.

Ahem. I believe you have just offended the ghost of Beau Brummel, among others. Boxing can be very gentlemanly.

Sounds like this is going to be a movie I'll have to see. So glad to hear about it!

<--- Points at Ghosthouse Pictures.

Pretty much every movie raimi's produced unde rthis production company has been pretty bad. Though he's doing this one with a different production company, so maybe that will help?

...although I CAN see Johnson as Ned (the whaler), speculation is that he's Nemo:

“20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA: CAPTAIN NEMO” Feature Film 04-16-09 
IDEALOGY, INC.
STATUS - Active Development LOCATION - Australia
PRODUCER: Sean Bailey - Jeanne Allgood WRITER: Justin Marks - Bill Marsilli
DIRECTOR: McG LP: Brent O'Connor
CAST: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson

The story begins with the mystery of an underwater “beast” that has been stalking boats, taking bites out of them, and leaving them to sink to the bottom of the sea. Ned, is reluctantly recruited by an old army buddy to hunt the beast. He’s joined by Aronnax, a scientist and Julie. They go out looking for this beast and eventually find it. But the beast is not a beast at all…it’s a super tricked out mega submarine called “The Nautilus,” captained by Nemo, who takes them captive and brings them back to a secret Volcano City. There they learn that Nemo is searching for a lost underwater civilization that holds libraries of vast knowledge and a weapon with the power to destroy mankind. (Studio is fast-tracking the project and hopes to make the film this year.)

I'm sorry, but I'm an unashamed fan of The Rock, when I was a kid I thought he was great in WWE and I think some of his movie performances have been great to watch, singing gay cowboy in Be Cool.  Smiley Ok, some of his other performances have been more ropey than the rigging of six master, but I believe he has great movie in him somewhere, lets just hope it's this one.

Looks like The Rock will not be in the 20,000 remake.  markf

Director McG told SCI FI Wire that, contrary to reports, Dwayne Johnson is not—repeat, not—set to star in his upcoming remake of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.  Speaking by telephone on May 4, the director-producer of the upcoming sci-fi actioner Terminator Salvation revealed that he's never spoken with Johnson and had actually offered the lead role to another genre favorite: Will Smith.  Following are edited excerpts from our exclusive interview with McG ...

*urgh* Not Will Smith. Will Smith doesn't act, Will Smith just plays Will Smith and while that is fine for many things... not this.

They should have Nemo as an actual Indian, and do it as a bollywood movie. Complete with people in diving suits doing big song and dance acts.

Hmmm, bit disapointed that The Rock won't be doing it, although it is probably for the best. Not sure I agree with the whole Bollywood thing, although having an Indian actor play Nemo, whats Art Malik up to these days?
