I'm really glad to see this thread still going strong. I'll be working on some visuals tonight. Maybe I'll have something to show off by Sunday

Whoa. What's going on there? What OS/Widgets/etc do you ahve going on there? I love it! On my own desktop, I'm sad. I didn't get around to designing the antique thermometer/barometer I had hoped for over Xmas.

Full size of my desktop... I'm using the Human theme with the steampunk pointer set (from e17-stuff.org) and a custom background. For Firefox I'm using the Walnut theme. Z.

I thought I'd join in the fun. I'm new to the forum, but this thread has given me a lot of inspiration. I've used an animated gif posted by someone earlier in the thread (unfortunately the resolution isn't as high as my settings, so it's slightly blurred - if anyone has a higher res version, I'd love it) and I've used various icons from various sources. the Pathfinder and Firefox icons are my own creations. The story I've included in the background image is part of a steampunk story called Steampunk Yeti Hunt by BonnySaintAndrew that I found. I've altered it slightly using GeekTool to include the current time, date and weather (including image) here at home (in the info from the first journal entry) as well as iCal info with upcoming events and my ToDo list at the bottom of page 2. iTunes info shows up as well, but only if it's running. Blends right in It's going to take a while, but eventually all my icons will be changed - a lot to change though! yetiboy

I'm having an issue with folder icons, and I'm wondering if anyone else has run into this.
I'm trying to change some folder icons, but if they're aliases they don't change - regardless of whether the folder icon they point to is changed. Anyone else encounter this and figure it out?

By Aliases I assume that you mean symbolic links... The thing is that if you are changing a folder, a Symbolic link is not that folder. You would need to change the properties of the symbolic link itself. (I'm making assumptions of the underlying Unixlike mechanisms being used in MacOs here...)

Actually, just to be confusing, OSX supports both Aliases (akin to Windows Shortcuts) and symlinks, and the two behave just slightly different from one-another (at least, in Tiger they do). For instance, Finder displays, and treats, folder aliases and folder symlinks as interchangeable — double-click on either one, and you open the folder that the alias/symlink points to. On the other hand, Terminal will happily cd into a symlink, but try to cd into an alias and you get a resounding "WTF?"
Back to yetiboy's question: I just did a small experiment. I created a folder, applied a custom icon to it, then created an alias (⌘L) and a symlink (ln -s). Both inherited the custom icon. I then changed the icon on the original folder; the Finder icon on the symlink changed (when I clicked on it), while the one on the alias did not.
It probably has to do with the fact that aliases (inherited from Classic, introduced sometime around System 7) are HFS file objects and so have always had their own icons, while symlinks (inherited from the NextStep/BSD Unix branch of the family) are UFS file objects which have never had their own icons, so (I'm guessing) Finder "fakes it" by using whatever the referent file's icon happens to be at present.
Hope that's of some use.

sorry for reviving an old thread, but I was transfixed with it as soon as I saw it and had to give some of the hints tips and links I found here a try. So far, this is what I have come up with: My desktop My desktop with start menu and winamp open How my intertrons looks now: Thanks to everyone here for the awesome ideas! So very inspirational. Now I think I will spend tomorrow browsing through freesound.org collecting some steampunk-esques sounds to go with it all. What a fun first day I have had on this forum

My old desktop in the workshop...lol...one of my many gearless thinking devices...need to get some better pics.. Jolly good looking machine. Its seems you've copied the steam punk workshop's keyboard and desktop quite nicely. Doesn't look very powerfull though, if I may aks, what are you running (hardware wise)? I believe that Steampunk is more than just brass and watchparts. It's finding a way to combine the past and the future in an aesthetic pleasing way. It's living a life that looks old-fashioned, yet speaks to the future.

Not super-duper steampunk... More Dieselpunk than anything (I was going for a WWII/1950 computer look without getting too fancy):
