I use the Firefox skin Glowygold which is not all that far removed from a brass/copper effect.

I'm quite shocked anyone had remembered that...unfortunately pieces of the project lie buried in my "to do" pile, which has been rather large lately...I will post a screenshot of what I DO have, the start menu and such. With that being said, how does one take a screenshot? (I apologize but I do not recall.

Skins are all fine and dandy, but I personally feel that the whole purpose of them are defeated when the task bar doesn't match. So i took about a good 2 hours to figure out how to change that makes everything else look like so... It's pretty subtle, yet makes everything look so much nicer, fits perfectly with the Goldy Glow thinga'ma'bob for firefox...

Gnome is quite easily customised: - Wallpaper is two panels of the Edison Bar photos, enlarged to 1680x1050px with no ill effect
- Screensaver (not shown) is a collection of vintage photographs and illustrations in keeping with steampunk aesthetics
- Panel and icon typeface is a Bookman ripoff for Linux
- Panel colour is beige for readability
- Custom theme controls are "Serenity", window borders "Brace2", icons "Humilty" (though I'm working on my own now)
- Firefox is skinned with OldFactory Silver/Rust
- iGoogle is skinned with SteamPunk
- Media player is Xine with the OMS_Legacy skin
O for the WinAmp media player - in a previous incarnation I used and loved that Unison Brainstormed skin! May eventually develop a similar one for Xine.

I was wondering what you all wanted in a desktop. Let your mind go wild. Interactive background, rotating gears to virtual consoles, a skybox with welding spark particle effects. Anything your mind can conceive of. Would you use a start menu? Use a system try or task bar? Is there any other way you would want the information presented?
What stylized format would you want systray icons to be in (OS X and Vista have the flat white/black audio and network icons). Let it all spill out.

Anyone have a clockwork or other suitably steampunk widescreen wallpaper, preferably at 1280x800 resolution? You would think such a thing would be easy to find.....

Google Image "clockwork", select Advanced Search -> Large Pictures, and you should find plenty of good examples from watch auctioners etc. Crop them to size with a graphics editor and you're away!
