I've found a website that sells plans to make your own wooden clock. Lots of plans are free if you use metric, imperial plans can be bought.

(Darn, another project on my to do list)

The best way to learn is by personal experience.

There are some other clock plans here: well as some plans for wooden gears that really, really shouldn't work...
