I was so delighted by Herr Doktor's Steam Pistol that I'm tempted to build a Steam Rifle based on the same operating premise.
Is there a steampunk convention regarding asking before starting such a thing? Or is this the raison 'etre behing Brass Goggles?

The Idea is for you to not ask permission, then produce your item.  Then, Herr Doktor can place a 10% lean against your income.    As the Sky Pirate, I do the enforcing.  Smiley

I cannot imagine that Herr Doktor would object.
But as a matter of etiquette, it would be a simple courtesy to send him a Personal message, and to credit him as the inspiration if you post any pictures on the internet, or in any other public format for that matter.

Maybe a little groveling and a small (read: large) tribute would ease the agreement? Tongue

I can't see Ian getting too worked up, but he does do some of his work as a business... i would suggest a friendly PM in his direction...

As I 'borrowed' the concept from Greg Bear's "A Martian Ricorso", borrow away!

As a professional designer ...

... in the realm of design cloning:
If you ask, and it's not for commercial use, I'll always say yes ... and be flattered to do so.  If its for commercial use, we'll work something out ... depending on the scope of use (and I'll still be flattered). If you don't ask ... Bad form, eh.

Basically same rules about photographing stuff - it depends on the scope of use.  Usually a statement of origin suffices. Taking pictures for your own enjoyment requires no permission (unless the photos are of folk in SP attire, then permission would be a proper consideration).

Writing about a design is your right, and permission is appreciated but not required - free speech and all that.

That said, everything ever designed is a copy (although evolved over time) of the first cave painting and whacking stick.
