I've just bought a new watch.
On the face is written Herbert Blockley.
Inside it claims to be a Swiss Seventeen, 17 jewel watch.
I can't find any hallmarks or stamps though.

I've attached a few (poor) pictures.
If anyone can tell me anything about this I'd be most grateful - even if it is just to say it's probably a modern fake.

What you've got there is an ordinary grade modern wristwatch movement fitted into a pocketwatch case.  This is often done whenever pocketwatches are fashionable for a time. At least it isn't Japanese quartz. The Swiss making is probably true, and I'm sure there are 17 jewels, albeit cheap synthetic ones; the Swiss government gets grumpy if you fake things like that.

The lack of signatures and hallmarks just means it's a basic trade movement, not an expensive hand built job. Who, if anybody, Herbert Blockley is doesn't matter.

If you didn't pay too much for it and it keeps passable time, wear it by all means. It looks nice enough, and plenty of less affluent Victorians and Edwardians carriedd brass or nickle cased basic watches very like it, in appearance anyway.

That's all good.
I picked it up quite cheaply and it has a nice heft to it so I'm happy with it.

I already have a nice silver pocketwatch for formal wear and I wanted a more rugged brass one for a different outfit.

If this ones a modern one then it should be good at keeping the right time and I won't worry about damaging a precious antique if I drop it or decide to mod it in some way.

Interesting dial..outer roman with inner arabic usually has the arabic counting either 13-24 or 0-60 (by 5's). Still, decent enough looking.  And since it looks like it has shock protection, it's probably more rugged then a real vintage pocket watch.

If you look carefully, you might see a symbol or some numbers under the balance wheel that'll tell us what the movement is.  The design is pretty common though.
