I'm off to Birmingham this weekend.
Can anyone recommend some places in and around the area that might sell some interesting things.
Anything from fob watches to brass junk to corsets to top hats.

I've already got The Oasis on my list, and I might head out to 'The Ranchhouse'.
Are there any other shops or areas that I should head for?

Theres a lovely old man on the indoor rag market who sells military items, and an awesome military shop out in Northfield (just off Bristol Road, near the Bear and the Staff pub). Theres a tobacconists down one of the arcades near Snow Hill station (off Corporation Road). I can't think of anything else off the top of my head, I shall kep thinking though.........

And also - a good, reasonably priced place to park. Don't mind a bit of a walk, just not a trek Smiley

There is a useful parking map on this website http://www.birmingham.gov.uk/parking (along with another link to parking charges).
When I was up there earlier this year for Lady Elsie's birthday do, we parked in the Ludgate Hill car park (number 3 on the map) which was very cheap.  A bit of a worry leaving the car at first, as it was more a patch of industrial wasteland  Smiley than a car park but it seemed safe enough in the end.

Excellent, thanks.

Those charges don't look so bad - I think we ended up in an NCP last time we were there, and that was hideously expensive. Smiley

Fancy Silk Store opposite the Rag Market is four floors of fabulous fabrics... you will need a day here alone!

You don't happen to remember the name or any better directions do you?
I'm trying to find it online before I drive there?

... And I forgot to say, but the Moseley Emporium has great reviews although I.ve never been yet- apparently 4 floors of second hand treasures, with skulls on the stairs...

(Moseley generally is quite a nice little place, less mainstream than some areas- fairly arty).

Sad to say, but T.W Ryders has fallen in my estimation recently as it now offers less army surplus & more "trendy" camping/ hiking gear than before, I could not even find a decent great coat there & the militaria on offer is fatally reduced.
On a plus note I've recently discovered an excellent army & navy stores on Station Road in Burton on Trent (I'll try & find its website tomorrow when I'm more awake)

ah yes, Springfield's, I hadn't realised they were still going. I got a raf battleblouse and greatcoat from them back in the 80's! And they used to sell silk parachutes- don't know if they still do...

It is up and down depending on what they have delivered that week.  They are also pretty silly when it comes to removing insignia and badges... I tried to buy a leather pouch and as I was making my purchase the lady realised the rank badge was on it and promptly cut it and the clasp off!!!  Angry  So making the pouch useless!!!!  Huh

They have some amazing antique uniforms for sale, just look up in the rafters, or hire, but the prices are very high.

If you have the stamina then the Angels Military sale is one to go for, but you have to be there at 4am and fight tooth and nail for anything worthwhile and a lot of the good stuff went in the first sale.

Anchor have another outlet in Mansfield I think... north Derbyshire somewhere, which is their central hub and they have a lot more stuff, although the great stuff is in their "museum" (read cabinets filled with shiny stuff) that they don't sell  Huh

Anchor's other base is in Ripley.

They actually have less there than they have in Nottingham so I wouldn't recommend a special trip.  Call in if you are going to the steam railway.

Sometimes you hit lucky at Anchor but they have been going downhill for ages.

Still they have always offered discount for service personnel Grin

Ah, but bear in mind that while I now live here, I'm not FROM Birmingham, and my formative shopping years were spent in Burton or Nottingham... And I'm not very good at shopping (unless it.s online)!

Well, dash it, oi be frum Wes'Coun'ry - at least that's where I was raised and lived until fifteen or so years ago.  We must help you overcome this terrible deficiency in shopping expertise sometime!   I bow to Mr Bellows' greater expertise on the shop, but if what you're after is something that they definitely stock (like military boots, and camping gear), then it's definitely worth a little rummaging to see if they've the odd gem tucked away in a corner, in my opinion.
