Hello all! Cheesy

I was wondering if there were any steampunk events (or places to visit) and such in/around the Norfolk area.
I just got to NOB Norfolk and seeing as how there's plenty of history surrounding Virginia, I find it impossible that there wouldn't be at least a few people here interested in the Victorian era.

When I was living in VA beach I didn't notice anything along the lines of steampunk but then again I wasn't really looking too much for it. But after reading this post it made me really miss living down there.

There's a group in Hampton Roads that's just getting started. We've got a handful of people so far, and we'd love to have you along for the ride! It's called SPEC - Seven Cities Postmodern Explorers Club.

The Guild of D.C. Serves as a sort of S. Md.- N. Va.- Pa. Steampunk umbrella group. check in on that thread from time to time and look for events/ Meetups. We try and do a regular once a month Tea or other event. In July we had a BBQ in Frederick, and at the end of this month we're hosting an Autumn Stroll and Tea- Party at the National Arboretum in Washington DC. Its a bit of a drive from Norfolk, but if you'd like to spend the night i'm sure we can put people up between us all.

Wonderful!
I just joined the facebook group. Smiley
Though, as of right now I'm not sure how active I can be.
I'm still getting used to life around here, I've been out to sea for the past three weeks and we're going out again in October.

Md. Renn Faire Pirate Adventure Wknd Scavenger Hunt Sat. 25th & Sun. 26th!!!!

Pirate Adventure weekend is here again...

Ok friends…..

This is for everyone going to the Pirate Adventure Weekend at the Maryland Renaissance Festival this weekend. Many of us go with varying frequency, but I’ve noticed that the largest collection of us seem to descend on the Faire on Pirate weekend. So I decided I’d try and do something a little fun this year. For all those who are interested, I thought I’d issue a fun (?) challenge…. I propose a Pirate Day Photo Scavenger Hunt!

So here is the deal… Whichever day you go to the Faire, (Sat. or Sun.) put together a team of 3 or 4 ppl, walk around the place and take pictures with yourself and people you see with the descriptions you see below. Next week, starting on Monday, email me your pics and my comrade Bevan Johnson & I will tally scores and determine the winner. 1st place gets bragging rights, and in addition I will put up a large size pirate flag to go to the winner. I’ll also post the best examples of each category below for everyone to see.

Below are the pictures you need to capture. Remember, you or a team member needs to be in the pic too in order to get credit.
Some of these can be 2-fors or 3-fors (ex: a historical figure (10 pts) who is a pirate with an eyepatch (2 pts) would be good for 12 points. A King (10 pts) who is a historical figure (10 pts) is good for 20 pts. A pirate with a hook (5 pts) who is also the scurviest seadog (5 pts) who also has an eyepatch (2pts) is worth 12 pts. (And in need of the public healthcare option, I would think…) I’m sure there are more combinations… you get the idea.
Only one entry for each category, (although some entries can fill more than one as stated above), so you can’t rack up points for taking pictures of 5 pirates with eyepatches or 3 kings (and none of those B.S. eastern kings that visited little baby Jesus).

As a little bonus, any picture you take toasting with somebody (raising your drinks in a toast) is worth double, and picture you take where the subject is eating a turkey leg (yours or theirs) is worth triple.

10 points:
A King (self explanatory)
A Queen (self explanatory)
A Historical Figure (Galileo, Blackbeard, Capt. Morgan, etc.)
A Devil (with horns or wings)
An Angel (with wings or a halo)
A Templar Knight
Any Mythological beast (centaur, unicorn, etc.)
Any character from myth or legend (King Arthur, Robin Hood, Beowulf, etc.)
Death (anyone dressed like Death)
Anyone on a segway or wheelchair decorated as a horse
A Furry (worth double if you can get the furry to lat down and play dead as though you killed it.)

5 points:
A Pirate with a parrot (or any shoulder critter)
A Pirate with a Hook
The Sauciest Wench
The Scurviest Seadog
A Wizard
A Witch or Warlock
An Elf (with ears)
A Dwarf
A Viking
A Roman
A Ninja
A Kung-Fu fighter
A Musketeer (ala’ The 3 Musketeers)
A Monk
A Maiden chaste of thought & pure of heart (or at least one who appears so)
A Plague Doctor
A Baby in garb/ Ren Faire costume.
A Somali Pirate
A man in a codpiece (cod must be visible)

2 points:
A Noble
A Commoner
A Hero (anyone who looks sufficiently heroic)
A Villain (anyone who looks sufficiently villainous)
Any Movie Character
Any Star Trek/ Star Wars characters.
A Fairy (with wings)
A Scotsman
A Barbarian
Any Jack Sparrow
Any LOTR character.
A Knight
A Pirate with Eyepatch
Any Anime character
A whole family in Renn Faire garb
A Steampunk

If you wish to participate, email me here, reply to this thread or at my gmail account (hbb3rd@gmail.com). Sometime early next week, email me your pics and which category/ categories they fit, as well as how many points you figure they are worth. Just FYI, Sarah, Bevan & I will be attending on Sunday. Once the entries are in, Bevan & I will evaluate, tally the points and post results ASAP. Again, email me ASAP if you want to play along, and happy hunting!!
