I haven't seen my buddies in the elevator crowd lately (yes there is one and my what an odd lot... they drink too much Moxie I think) and I happened upon the most lovely piece of an old elevator, the speed control:

There are at least two buildings in chicago that still use this style of throttle and thus employ elevator attendants.  Apparently this thing came from a building that switched to choose-your-own-floor.  It's dying to be put to use.  Anyone fancy a guess as to the voltage etc?

P.S. if you have an elevator it's yours
