Looks like this should be quite similar to the Victorian Farm short series that was shown last year. Should be good! Smiley

Victorian Pharmacy
Thursday 15 July
9:00pm - 10:00pm
BBC2

First of four episodes.

From the RadioTimes website:

Quote
Domestic historian Ruth Goodman, former chatelaine of BBC2's Victorian Farm, takes us back in time to 1837, the year Queen Victoria ascended the throne. With pharmacist Professor Nick Barber and their apprentice Tom Quick, she sets up a chemist's shop in the Blists Hill Victorian Town at Ironbridge, Shropshire. What follows is a leisurely potter down the gruesome by-ways of Victorian "medicine". We see a volunteer being nibbled by a leech and there is much talk of "phlegm" and, horribly, of "purging".

I'm rather excitied about this!! I have a rather meagre collection of victorian pharmacy items in my little study/laboratory and am attempting to grow my collection!

In our lovely victorian spa town here (Malvern) there is a shop (which is sadly now a jewellery and accessories shop which is part of a chain) which used to be a very old pharmacy. Fortunately the shop fitting has been sympathetic and they have kept all the old drawers and signs and labels. I actually remember from my childhood when this was still a functioning chemists shop! I was secretly hoping to be able to rent the shop myself and turn it into a steamy emporium - but alas there was no way I could have afforded the rent!

I've set the V+ and I'm looking forward to this.

Actually, if you scan the Hitler, erm sorry, History Channels, etc., there's usually at least one or two Victorian based programmes on each week.

I'm going to be watching this. Did anyone else catch 'Tales from the Green Valley'? It was  the same people but set in the 17th century.

Cough Remedy including Chloroform, cannabis and opium!!! Shocked
Might not cure your cough but then again, after this you wouldn't care

Looking at the Bronchial Kettle - cough remedy and sauna all in one.

The scary bit was the scarifier - give me the leeches anytime.

Of course with all those colourful bottles, the scarifier, vacuum pump, bronchial kettle, backroom laboratory, measuring jugs, etc who couldn't help but love this program.  I loved the decor in the shop and the lab - I WANT ONE.

Everything is made from blown glass, wood and brass; excellent. Really looking forward to the next episode! I did History of Medicine, very interesting field of study, especially some of the more bizzare "treatments". That scarifier would have been spring loaded, I believe, so not quite as painful as pressing into your arm and manually sawing at the skin! Bring on Joseph Lister, Edward Jenner, etc etc. The development of the smallpox vaccine is where it gets really interesting!

Thoroughly enjoyed that episode with lots of squealing and grimacing! You gotta love the Victorians! Blists Hill is just fab and we were only there a month ago, so brings back some nice holiday memories.

Yeah, it was the leeches that did it for me. I've got quite a strong stomach for blood and guts and bodily fluids generally, but... just ... not... leeches.

Ahhh - my three favorite ingredients!  Grin   OK, so technically I havent used Opium, though I have had Diamorphine - the medical name for Heroin - while in hospital after a somewhat serious accident (for pain relief - which it does VERY well !!). Close enough though...  Wink
As for the other two, well that can be summed up with the term "Chemistry student"....  Cheesy  *shudders remembering the Ether incident...*

Actually the cough remedy would have worked very well, the opium is an antitussive (cough suppressants), and opioids are sometimes still used for that purpose. The Cannabis would also have helped somewhat, as would the Chloroform. Infact Chloroform is still used in some modern cough mixtures such as "Covonia Catarrh Relief".

I really enjoyed the episode, but I do hope they cover some of the more stranger (read 'quack' ) medications and remedies of the period.  And they had better include Laudanum too!!  Grin
I really have the urge need to get some old medication bottles and various chemist's bottles now.  Cheesy

Better than getting gangrene and having your leg cut off.

I was watching this on the TV the other day, a guy who had half a foot missing with a couple of maggots kept in the wound with gauze.   I think it was on "Invasion of the Body Scratchers"

I was quite interested in the 'everlasting pill'.  It struck me as being a useful tool for throwing sickies (pun not intended).  Or maybe as part of a drinking game- who ever holds it down the shortest, gets in the next round....

Very good, thoroughly enjoyable. Was a little sad that the Malvern Water Cure was not shown in Malvern though! I can appreciate the logistics might have proved difficult though! We do have a tiny little museum in Malvern with local history and a number of blue plaques mentioning a few famous names that came to Malvern to "take the waters".

The chemistry bits are quite good, for the rest, this series is generally dull and, unlike the quite excellent Victorian Farm, shows little of history and almost no attempt to achieve any form of authenticity (with the exception of the costume that Ruth wears).

Yes I thinks its the one she made in Victorian farm and I also noticed that her daughter appears to be wearing a blouse made from the same fabric in "Escape in Time" (essentially Victorian Farm meets the generation game)

ok I'll stop being a geek now lol

A lot of Ruth's costumes are made by the lady who owns the drapers shop at Blist's Hill. She was mending one of Ruth's aprons when we visited in June as she'd worn out the pockets..... could we possibly be seeing more of these series?Huh
