So I have been thinking of the various items in my everyday life which i would like to make more steampunk, and thought of my PSP.  I love my psp, but it has gotten pretty beaten up and i am thinking about getting one of the new ones.  If i got a new psp, then i would love to steampunk my old one.  Does anybody have any suggestions for how this might be done?  Just so you know, i have basic skills, but can't really do anything too intricate with metal.

If you wanted to, any additions to the PSP plastic covers would be well worth looking into, or creating a leather sleeve as a base for modifications.

I think something along the lines of the God of War PSP mod that sold on ebay would be fantastic.

And don't forget the desktop changer thing for that finishing touch.

Ah, the PSP. I'm a prolific PSP hardware modder, and started a copper faceplate for it as well as cog UMD door window, but never got around to finishing. If you need any help with the hardware or software, give me a bell, as I've completely disassembled and reassembled around 20 or 30 PSPs, and been hacking the software since 3.03 OE-C.

Background wallpaper and all the icons/sounds as well IIRC.

There's some how-to stuff here->

There's probably more useful stuff on those forums as well.

The QJ forums are notorious amongst the PSP hacking scene for being ill-informed. I'd suggest www.psp-hacks.com as a good place to go to learn the basics of software modding, and www.acidmods.com for the hardware side of things. I'm a regular on Acidmods (under the moniker Slimby) and I'll be able to help you there without veering too far from Steampunking the PSP. Have you thought at all about what you want to do?

well, I am working on this with another brass goggles member (enderwigin) as we are best friends and all that stuff.  We have been bouncing around different ideas of what to do.  ender wants to totally dismantle the psp and make a new back out of brass (by making a mold and casting).  How difficult would this be? We are planning on dismantling a psp today to get a good look at it's innards.  I think that it would be better to just make a bass faceplate, as i have lots of experience taking off the faceplate of the psp.  I would then add leather pads to where the hands go on the back (a la datamancers wrist pads on his laptop).

so basically this is still in the planning stage...suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated

I put some leather on the backplate, and I had the copper faceplate. It still needed sides, though. Making a backplate would be amazingly hard, as it's a really complex and vital piece of hardware keeping every piece of the PSP in check. Also, it acts as an insulator (depends on the motherboard/wifi card combination you have, though) so replacing that with something conductive wouldn't be too good. However, if you managed to get a solid copper faceplate/backplate... Stick me down for one, post haste!

Yeah, i was thinking that the backplate would be fairly incredibly difficult, but we weren't sure.  How did you go about making your copper faceplate?

Simple. I got a spare stock faceplate, sat it on some one millimetre thick copper, and traced round it. Ten minutes of Dremel work later, and there you have it. The thing to remember is that the sides taper down somewhat, and there are some pieces of plastic set up for TIR that help get the LED indicator light to where it should be. I seem to remember that Deal Extreme and possibly Coolmods sell copper aftermarket faceplates, which I have yet to buy but once a request comes in from a customer I'll be getting. The metallic red faceplate I bought was high quality, although the original buttons are always the best choice. In fact, what I was thinking of doing was getting some brass furniture tacks and engraving the symbols on them, and then fixing them onto the original buttons.

I will have to try making a copper faceplate, thanks for the advice.  We will probably destroy enders old psp while trying different things...all good fun in the name of education.

Capital! If it has no use, and you break it trying to give it use, then it's no loss.
