Check out http://www.steampunkmagazine.com/ for the first issue of Steampunk Magazine. I havent read through it all yet, but it looks to be pretty interesting at a glance.

Thanks for that. Coincidentally it occured to me to check the site today to see if there were any updates but there was no sign of anything then so I might not have checked back for a while.

Yeah I have no idea what to make of them either. They just kind of popped up out of nowhere. I think I found them via some random googling one day. I wrote them an email and we went back and forth for a bit, then they suggested I submit something, I agreed, then I didnt hear from them until today.

*shrug* with something as volunteer-driven as this, you have to expect that their organization is going to be a bit frazzled, at least at first.
Who knows, maybe they already had Abney Park locked in and didnt want to put two music articles in the same issue?
Don't worry Josh, all the COOL steampunkers know you came first.
Right folks?

Right, whatever you say... yikes. I kinda like the fact that the magazine has the punk aspect (i'm no elitist you guys always complain about, I just enjoy that side of our beloved genre).

*Gasp* Free publications?  What a fabulous idea!  I always think it odd when indy/anti-establishment/punk groups try to make a profit with their stuff  Roll Eyes

LOL.. thanks man.. that's good to know *chuckle*

It's also a relief to know I'm not the only person that they kind of blew off after a few rounds of e-mails...  Wink

You do bring up a good point too, that they may just not want to interview more than one musical group in the same issue. I did find it pretty cool that they gave props to Michael Moorcock though.

There's also a matter of curb appeal. Abney Park is a little more "marketable", so they might have went with the "grabber" band for the first issue.

Talented though you may be, you don't have quite as many props (or cute steampunk bellydancers).

Likewise. I also really like that they supply you with a version optimized for printing. I abhor reading long documents on a computer display.

After reading a bit and scanning alot, I think I will purchase a hard copy of this publication. I used to be co-owner in a radical used book store, and am somewhat of a bibliophile, so a an official printed edition is a must for my library.

ah well...such is marketing.

If it'll make you feel any better, I'll throw a banner up on my site for you. I've been getting quite a bit of traffic lately.
You seem like a decent chap, how about it? Wanna do a link trade?

Sure. =)

You can use the one that Cory has on his site (it's small and informative).

I don't really have any banners on my site, but I'll link you on my myspace and website.

The banner space on my site is closer to the width of your sig banner. Mind if I grab that? I can stretch it out a little bit and stick the Musical Steampunk Journey tagline in there to make it more descriptive.

Good sir VP,
I just did a post on my blog discussing this magazine and this forum.
While steampunk is only one of the subjects I cover on my blog, I have been listening to your work, streaming from your website, all morning. I will happily do a post on your projects soon.
Though, it is not my normal modus operandi, I would be happy to do an interview with you, or just hear your ideas on this. Feel free to pm me.

p.s. The player on your site tells me that all the tracks I am listening to are Sonnet de l'Absinthe from The Last Express, yet I don't find this in your discography?

Oh thank you sir! I will PM you about an interview...

as for the player, you will find that the first five or six tracks aren't currently on an LP (they are all for my upcoming LP Behold the Machine). Below those are tracks from Catalysts (my covers album), and below that is my last LP The Forgotten Age.

Glad you are enjoying the music, always encouraging to hear!  Cheesy

I shall do the same! in fact I'll put it just ABOVE the Abney Park banner.

<it is done - that was easy, you even "target=_blank" in your sig HTML >

The principle a Magpie Ratt emailed me after seeing my Electro-Etched Moleskins and I "consulted" on the Etching article.  Like Doc, I begged off writing something as I have little enough spare time as it is.

I've only skimmed the issue so far but I like the artsy/alternative flavor.

I've been reading the first issue of Steampunk Magazine since I got home and I'm very excited!  This is indeed a wonderful, highly literate periodical chocked full of interesting stories and radical ideas!

The opening feature article What Then, is Steampunk by the Catastrophone Orchestra and Arts Collective lays out a description of Steampunk that I fear a few of our number will have some issues with but elucidates many of my own thoughts so well that from now on rather then straining my own poor brain for words I will simply point and respond with "What they said . . ." when asked "What is Steampunk".

So, one and all I suggest you fire up your computational engines and down the first issue, while you are at it order a paper copy for your archives as you will want to collect this fine work.

Jake.
