My allergies, and having to choose between spending the entire day sneezing and sniffling, or taking Benedryl and spending the entire day fighting off sleep.

MP3 downloading site. Why oh why does it have to be so blasted difficult? I've paid my money, now give me my audiobooks, d--n you. It keeps telling me that it needs to verify my password, which I enter and then get nowhere.... GAH. I wouldn't mind but this is after they are actually downloaded to my computer- I have to enter in the password to actually listen to something I've paid for. Outrageous.

Claratine doesn't work for you?
There are a lot of products which are advertised as non-drowsy antihistamines anti-allergens decongestants etc. ... but none of them work very well compared to their traditional analogues. For those, well, at 25mg diphenhydramine hydrochloride is advertised for allergy relief; at 50mg, for insomnia relief.

There's not that much reason why they shouldn't, though. All you have to do is develop and antihistamine that doesn't cross into the brain, and you're sweet. Managing to develop a drug which lets you pick and choose like that is such a thing as fortunes are made of. It should be possible, but I don't know of any non-drowsy antihistamines on the market which have comparable effectiveness. A lot of drugs have very analogous structures to known compounds. Something with significantly distinct properties might be too different from known compounds, so it could be a breakthrough result rather than a likely result of normal development. To be honest, claratine works faster and better for me than first-generation antihistamines like polaramine...
Loratadine sort of works for me, for suppressing reactions to low-level allergens. Early spring pollen counts, provided I don't also go running through any fields of clover. But it's not a drop-in replacement for diphen as far as treating stronger reactions or dealing with sporadic symptoms, at least not in my experience with it. For one thing, loratadine relies on having a stable concentration built up over time. Knowing the overdose parameters for diphen also helps since I can take a bit more if it's not working (at the expense of pushing it into sleepy pill territory), while IIRC loratadine doesn't really scale with dosage.

Sadly it's down to the level of fat (lipid) soluability (ie ratio of lipid/water soluability), the greater fat solubility gives better blocking (competitive antagonist) of the histamine receptors but better penetration of the blood brain barrier so more drowsiness, and vice versa, its all a matter of degree, but generally - dopey but sneeze free vs awake but sneezing.

Just trying to lighten the mood capt. no need to take it as disrespect. It can suck when life hits you with several things at once, I've had day, week months and stints of years where people have asked me how life is treating me and I answer quite honestly that it's treating me like a hacky-sack (aka kicking me around). There's not much I can do for solving the watch issue unless you want one of the spare battery powered pocket watches I have here, not terrible great quality. As to the stress, and aggrivation, the week is over and perhaps now that you have the chance to get away from it for a bit things will swing the other way. I find life tend to balance out more often than not, just keep your eyes open for good opportunies. health problems are nasty and no fun. In the last three weeks: I've bled internally, had several gum and tooth pains (possibly even abscesses), a flare of severe crohns, a nasty flu, some arthritic symptoms that might be a hold over from a run in with gout recently. All within the confines of the stores in the area not carrying some of the few foods I can eat with my illness (I can eat eight that I know of and no store carries more than 4), an inability to use medications without getting sick (this includes fever reducers and painrelievers as they would not only make me react as if food poisoned but would make me eject large amounts of blood), being unemployed and without any medical care professionals in the area that are even remotely competant to deal with my issues even if they didn't cost three times as much as I made in a month when I was working. So yeah health problems suck. Me personaly, I make jokes at the absurd levels that life goes to when trying to push me down. It usually helps.

As you say it was just another annoying incident in a week that has been plagued with stress and problems. I meant you (or anyone else who responded) no malice. I was just..you know..fed up! The health problems I referred to are my mother's. She's 200 miles away and I don't drive. My father and my only brother both died within three weeks of each other a couple of years back and it hit her really bad. Well..it hit us all really badly as you can imagine but I think my brother's death pushed her over the edge a bit. Her memory is going and she's really frail (she's 84). Now she says she wants to come back down to London for a few days. Obviously I said she can stay with me but it's going to be very stressful. And I'm the last person who should pick someone up because they made a joke..I make lame jokes all the time. So don't sweat it, my friend. I apologise if i came across as overly grouchy. Incidentally my usual response to the question "How's life treating you?" is "Like I ran over it's dog!"

Having kids wanting to come on our flat's walkways to skateboard. No big deal in itself, but one day there's two, then four then ten, then their big brothers looking for trubble, and the big brothers think we're stupid enough to fall for this whole scam again.
Kids are not as innocent as some would have us believe, I've seen ten year olds set fire to cars. It's not happening in my neighbourhood again if I have anything to do with it.

Incidentally my usual response to the question "How's life treating you?" is "Like I ran over it's dog!" I feel for you Capt. Dirigible, but to put things in perspective let me tell you...I take care of my 87 year-old grandfather. Now, full into the "role-reversal" stage of life. He suffers from severe depression not dementia, but the end result is similar. His first-born son is unable to take care of him since he and his wife are both recovering from cancer. My mother is very smart and educated, but somehow always struggling for money (my grandfather and I used to send her some money!). So I have to do this myself. The man raised me as his son, so I owe him; on the other hand, its difficult for me, as he lost his good mind almost 3 years ago when we were both involved in private business (I made the mistake of going into the family business right out of college -please don't ever do this to your children!). I had to take over the whole business, as he just sat down on a chair and never got up again. Straining to finish his contracts (which I did), I was involved in a double bankruptcy last year, of which I'm still trying to pick myself out of at age 41 (with strong debt outstanding still!). The bankruptcy came because last year I made the mistake of planning to spend a few months unemployed after closing the business; I'd be able to take a professional job after a few months-I thought. Ha! Not in this economy. In the mean time I work temporary jobs, barely paying my rent. I rent a one-bedroom flat. My grandfather sleeps in the bedroom, and I used a large piece of furniture to turn the living room into a "bedroom." I'm supposed to be an aerospace engineer dammit! Not a census worker! Every day I wonder if I'm going to come out alive from this one. But I have to make it, and take care of him. Just place one foot in front of the other until I come out of this. So I understand your pain, but everything is relative. There is always someone who is in worse shape than you are, just keep that in mind. For my part, I'm glad to have friends like all of you here at Brassgoggles. Frankly, you guys, and the "art" keep me sane... JW
