Ok so there's a really cool bowler I'd like, but it's only available in black and I'd like it in brown.
The guy who was showing it to me informed me I could just dye it myself!
Have any of y'all attempted  dye job before, and if so can you give me any advice before I mess up a $20 hat!?!?!

You can't DYE a black hat brown. You have to remove colour, and colour remover or bleach will most likely damage the hat.  The guy who was showing it to you is either an idiot or was lying to you. If you REALLY know what you are doing you *might* be able to bleach it uniformly and reblock it but you would really be better off looking elsewhere for a brown one.

Thanks for the speedy reply lilibat!
Eh, I may just get the hat and go with black until a better one presents itself.
Thanks again!

Picture, perhaps?  I know where you can get a good brown bowler, especially since I've been looking at one for myself...

You could also make a brown band for it to match whatever else you wanted to match with it.
