dnbsdizzy- i'm loving the second pic, the broderie bra and the bloomer style trousers are just perfect! that's how i'd imagine a SP dancer
Thanks! the pants are stretch velvet and ridiculously comfy, I wish I had a picture of the back of that costume the vest is a tailcoat and the bustle has big red roses, it's fun.

I think SP lends itself very well to fusion, especially burlesque style fusion. Nothing dances better to a saucy horn section than a bustle and a cute top hat! Oooh, lovely pics, thanks for posting!
Also: bellydancing outfits don't need to only be the least amouth of clothing possible - if you look up photos/videos of bellydancers you can see that they manage to throw a whole whack of accessories and add-on into their ensemble, so there's plenty of opportunity to steampunk it through that.
Right on! My old instructor used to call fusion 'trash-can dancing' because of all the weird things fusion girls could find/fit into their costumes! Bird skulls anyone?

Moulin Rouge might be a good film to get some belly dancing inspiration, especially the rehearsal scenes when they are mixing their own clothes with the Indian costume pieces. I think "Turkish Trousers" are a great idea for the belly dancing bottoms. You see how they could be the same pants?

Hi bellydancers! Another one here...I am starting to design a steampunk-bellydancer costume, but I'm going more in an Art Nouveau/ancient Egyptian-inspired direction with mine. I have a tentative show coming up; if I get it together in time, I will post pics. The pics in this thread are great! Thank you, ladies, for sharing them! Are there any more? Please? --Leslie

Thought I'd share the link of this Steampunk Harem Pinup. It's utterly excessive and over the top. It has cogs-shaped button-pins and all sorts of... but it's nice and could be a source of inspiration.

I looked at the whole steampunk harem gallery and there was a serious slave leia thing going on in there. The one costumemercenary posted is one of the best.

I had me a suicide chain, for all of 5 minutes. Thing hurt! I was later informed that doing your own piercings with a thumb tack was probably part of the problem. Anyway, the tribal/fusion/bellydance is, indeed, the new hottness. And ya know, sometimes, every so often, things are trendy because they are in fact cool. This is going to be old news to a lot of you, but I figure I'll just toss in a reference here to Beats Antique, who seem to be right up on the front lines of this trend. And for good reason: I really dig their music, it brings a lot of what I liked in Jungle/Drum n Bass to a very sepia tone place. And one of the three band members is a belly dancer, so its little wonder that their music is very much made for that kind of thing.

I have heard of Beats Antique, but have not taken the time to listen to any of their music; thanks for the suggestion!
So far, the only (even slightly) appropriate music I have found is by Solace...the tribal fusion group, not the New Jersey metal group.
So! Abney Park; Beats Antique...any other music suggestions?
I need to pull out my Fifth Element soundtrack. I think I remember some good stuff on that one.

You might check out some Jungle style DJs. It might be just the thing, or you might hate it. I ran across this from a DJ I hadn't played in a while, and it made me think of this.
If you like this kind of thing at all I can make further recommendations. This is NOT something anyone would listen to and go, "Hay! That's steampunk!" But it might still work.

That one Beats Antique track reminded me of the beginning of Lebanese Blonde by Thievery Corp. Not steampunk but I always liked this one by Punjabi MC (minus the annoying rap by Jay-Z).

This band is popular with the TF kittens in DC:
And I gotta say, I believe organic music to be about 70 x 7 times better for bellydance than soulless blippy blops. But that's an opinion...and I actually kinda like soulless blippy blops, so I promise I ain't judging!

Wilhelmina, Utini, Vagabond Gentleman: Thank you for your suggestions. The music you suggest is nice for listening, but not what I would choose for dancing. However, I do appreciate all the suggestions!
Miss Groves, I had a listen to the Fifth Element soundtrack, and the only track that seems useful is Akta. I'll see if I can find the Dark Cabaret you mentioned.
Just now, my old Natacha Atlas CDs are sounding good...

Actually, the song I am about to start choreographing is "Solitude" from Ahsas! Mezdeke sounds familiar...where have I heard that before? I will check into that and World Tribe. Many thanks! --Leslie

Something I picked up and was very pleased with - Waltzes, Glitches and Brass http://www.empcds.com/comp-vaudeville.html - It's a little odd at times, but it's a wonderful and interesting compilation!
