This is a breaking news story. February sees the closing of the Oxford Steampunk Exhibition March we have the Hidden Planetarium at Brighton and White Mischief in London but nothing further north. Consequently we are putting together a special steampunk event at The Ropewalk Public house in the jewellery quarter of Birmingham for Saturday March 13th. This will be from 12 noon to midnight so we are looking at a day programme as well as an evening gig with live music. Lineup is to be confirmed over the next few days but rest assured it will be the sort of fun you expect from the VSS. The pub has a well stocked bar and does good food so make a day of it. We will have space for a few trade set ups too. Tickets will be priced at just £6 and are strictly limited. They will go on sale on the VSS website early next week along with full details. Mark the date now and we look forward to seeing you there. Tinker

Well that lasted a long time - I am afraid the cat is out of the bag. An errant email has let Lady Elsie in on the secret that this event has actually been planned as a surprise birthday party. March 16th is actually a milestone birthday for the Mehmsahib. It would be rude of me to divulge her age but it is a score that cricketers take the salute of the crowd for. (Before you chip in Herr Doktor it is not the FULL century!) Consequently I am now able to come totally clean and step aside from the secret mails and pms which have been flying. March 13th we are having a steampunk birthday bash for Lady Elsie. We want to fill the capacity of 70-100 people. We will be putting on steampunk features in the day as advertised and a mixture of life music and recorded tunes, fundamentally from steampunk tracks. Of course this is actually free although if people want to volunteer to entertain or do a feature during the day then please email me at majortinker@aol.com and it would be much appreciated. The venue is great. It serves good food at very reasonable prices and has a well stocked bar. We can look forward to 12 hours of fun and helping Lady Elsie over the distress of another birthday. Hoping to see you there. Tinker (Apologies about the failed subterfuge but we needed a cover story to get the Mehmsahib over to Birmingham) Special thanks to Linzi and Nigel for your help. Apologies that she found out.

Count me in, of course Lady Elsie does not need an excuse for a new outfit on her birthday, however this does not explain why she needs a new outfit on any other day of the year.

*Puts Hand up* I'm in, although I think my Memsahib is already going out that night so I might not be able to stay to the finish because I'll have to look after my lovely coglings.... Hmm I might ask a couple of my other Steampunk orientated companions if they fancy saying how-de-do if that's not a problem. & Major Tinker...shame on you An errant email has let Lady Elsie in on the secret that this event has actually been planned as a surprise birthday party.
You must practice your subterfuge skills a little more so you could at least last a week afore Lady Elsie finds out

It's marked on the Adister calender is big letters! Wouldn't miss this for the world (although the Significant Other will almost certainly be working during the day so will be joining around evening.
I've registered my willingness to volunteer, especially if there's the chance to boss people around move things along efficiently.

Much as Xa and I would love to make the trip to Birmingham for this truly auspicious occasion the following day (the 14th) is Mother's Day and we are required to be at another, erm, 'event' in another part of the country. We'll therefore be sending our Birthday Wishes from afar.

Being so close to home, what excuse could I possibly offer for not attending?
The lady wife and myself will be there.

Apologies indeed for dereliction of duty in rarely venturing onto this board - my moments at BG are few and snatched, so it has taken me till now to get this far..... But I will be having Serious Words with The Master as to the possibility of attending, and will communicate through the appropriate channels when I have a definitive answer - I would really love to come Special birthdays should indeed be celebrated to the brim!

Sound like a fab event! However, I do believe I will be busy that day as a good friend also has her birthday on the 13th. But I shall investigate further...

I am so pleased that so many will be able to come and help me fight off the evil birthday bunny. There is room for many more friends to come. So please come and join in the fun.
We also will be able to announce very soon the live band who will be playing for us and more importantly which kind of cake we will have!!
Looking forward to this so much.
yours, Lady Elsie.

Right, assuming I can beat my roster clerk into submission and get the time off, I shall do everything I can to be there. I mean, aside from being dead, what excuse would I have for missing something as important as this, eh?

The venue is in the Jewellery Quarter so lots of places to explore around there (and potential sources of materials for projects) There are no tickets as such - that was a cover story that sort of got blown thanks to someone emailling to the wrong address and letting the Mehmsahib into the secret That means the event is free btw!!!! We are aiming to welcome people from around noon. Running noon to midnight means we have time for other things during the day. Ideas and suggestions are welcome. We would like to run a light hearted steampunk pub quiz and a couple of similar type games. I hope we can have a demo or workshop too. The venue offers food as well so we can get well esconced and have a great time. I can't advise on car parking since I am in the same quandry myself. Any advice from locals?
