for my school load i currently cycle between four different bags.
1) a blue denim backpack - very plain and standard
2) a black denim Betty Boop messenger bag with aged brass-tone hooks and grommet thingys
3) a 1 shoulder backpack, black with gray stripes, red splatter marks, and a great big skull, &
4) a red canvas re-usable Disney store shopping bag with Mickey Mouse

any ideas on how to make any of those bags more steampunk?

Have you tried giving the skull on 3 some goggles, airship pirate style?

I agree on the skull one, a pair of goggles sounds like a good idea. Maybe a tophat-shaped patch too, to go on top of the skull? It's not that hard, and would look incredibly nice in faux leather or something vinyl-ish.
Maybe some studs too? Although I'd go for silver ones, since it's black and gray..

I wouldn't really touch the Betty Boop one by the way, sounds good as it is.

I say give Mickey an eyepatch Cheesy

The denim backpack is almost perfect as-is but you can sew some leather patches on it for more effect.

The Betty Boop bag also looks awesome as it is.

The skull bag you could modify with some fabric paints instead of patches.

If and whenever the blue one wears out take it apart carefully and use it to make a pattern to sew a new one out of heavy canvas and thin leather. Add cargo markings such here and there.

Dye the blue denim (#1) black, or perhaps browne.  Then send it to Miss darkshines for accessories!   Grin

actually, i did. i could only find amazingly cool leather satchels, which i do not have. :/

but my main problem with the betty boop bag is that betty boop wasn't really around during the timeframe that we imagine steampunk would have been. I've noticed some scratches in the applique, so i'm thinking i might be able to very carefully peel it off.

You might get some ideas from other SF members from this thread, including mine for all of $6 USD on Ebay.  markf

The Boop bag already has a row of brass studs..it gets my vote. Make a big Steampunk patch out of leather with applied brass and copper thingies, maybe some gears and more studs, cover Betty with it and then continue the theme around the straps. The applique could make it look like your backpack is actually a complex steam-powered machine.

Maybe you could paint over the pink on Betty Boop.  Give her a more victorian color pallet.  I'm thinking make her look like nose art for an airship.  Take the pattern that flows out around her and paint it to look like clouds, maybe.

If you're still after ideas (even though the thread's over nine months old), try Threadbanger's Dyeing jeans with coffee tutorial on the denim one.

Okay Numero Uno gets my first vote!

I'd say either buy up some leather scraps from a leather supply store ( Oregon Leather )
or go to a second hand store and buy up some cheap leather items and cut them into patches.
I'd also say buy a bottle of cloth dye from your local Box Store in black or any other color you like
and some small paint brushes, maybe some cardboard and Gorilla tape.
Using the tape & Card board make stencils of "Steam Punk" stuff as you feel you'd like; air ships
gears, Military designs. Random words / characters in other languages?
And place the stencils on the leather goods, use the dye Straight applied with a brush ( small brushes)
until it looks nice and dark.

let it sit out under a heat source for a day or so and make sure it's sitting flat so the ink doesn't run.
Then wash it once in cold water with vinegar. After that you can sew, glue or rivet them on!

Wow, thank you EVERYONE the great ideas and for bringing this thread back up! Will and Suriehl, I like you're idea's the best, and I'll probably end up combining them and/or Inventor's suggestion. What's extremely convenient is that I recently received quite a bit of large leather scraps from my school production, so I'm really looking forward to this! If I get started now I might have pics to post by tomorrow Smiley

NO, NO! Leave her on. This bag has lots of potential as it is made from good materials and is in better condition than the denim jeans one.

I suggest MAKING Ms Boop some goggles out of wire and so on and sewing them onto her. Similarly you could dress her up by stitching on some clothes, a wee parasol etc etc.

I agree that Betty could be re-dressed to something closer to Victorian sensibilities, as well as looking like airship noseart. Maybe you could paint over the Betty Boop scroll with SS "Something"?

For the jean bag, I say get a couple colors of metallic fabric paint and a stiff bristled brush and paint the jean portions. (Metallic paints can look like worn-till-shiny leathers) Add some more studs or hack an old clock for gears to use as zipper pulls. The military/steamtrunk stencilling is also a good idea, especially if you can make it look like the bag was made from old stencilled fabric. My other idea was bleaching pinstripes into the fabric (can be very difficult) and adding some lace bits (like along the zippers) with lockets, or brooches as zipper pulls, to make it more feminine Victorian.
