ALL of y'all best wear hats.  Ticks, my friends, ticks. If you plan on trekking through the woods or wandering about in the rough at all, long trouser-legs and perhaps even long sleeves.  Poison Ivy, friends.  Poison ivy.
And not to scare y'all, but if y'all intend to go anywhere near brush, wear tall boots or sturdy gaitors.  Copperheads.  Just saw one this last Sunday.  Tried to kill it, but don't know If I were successful.

So what you are saying is that I should show up wearing this?

As for fencing and local get togethers; Starting at the end of the month my weekends should be free for a bit. I have a lot of potential travel in my future. Now if VG's BBQ is on Sunday August 1st, we can plan for dueling lessons after that. Or I can even bring some of my equipment down there as well.

-Announcement!-

Alright, looks like the Sunday, Aug 1st BBQ is on!  Wrote the Matriarch, got the 'ok'.

Here's some skinnies:  There ain't a lot of parking space.  MAYBE two spots on the gravel driveway, maybe one joint in the yard, if it has moderate off-road capabilities.  Funny!  So much land...but everything is all fenced off for the horses and all with no vehicular access...
Couple of solutions:  1st, carpooling.
2nd:  There's a High School a couple of miles away.  After school hours, parking there is free, and I/we could ferry folk from the High School to the Homestead.

We have bonfire...we don't have grill!  (Well, aside from my gold teeth)  So someone would have to bring one...else we'll be roasting everything over the open flames, which is fine for most things, but...grill would still be nice.  Volunteers for bringing a grill?

I'd like a head count eventually, and we should organize who's bringing what.  I'd be happy to buy up a grip of deaders.  That is, meats of various sorts.  Let's get a list of particularly American BBQ grub for the Limey.  Potato salad, corn on the cob, slaw, watermelon, what else?

Anyone who can make it is whole-heartedly invited.
PM me for the address, k?

Ma coeur - me + ticks + heels = a tantrum of epic proportions. I also work weekends, so making the trek is unlikely for me.

It also looks like I'm bowing out of Drac's - due entirely to managerial incompetence. I will, however, be ringing in my FUNemployment from that god-forsaken place with a lot of wine and a trip to at least two faires for mead. So if anyone wants my ticket - let me know. I just want the damned thing out of my wallet so as to not get upset.

I just dusted off my straw hat to make sure it still fit... I was thinking I would make a new band for it, but the horsehair band that is on it is too cool to change, so the hat is going to be worn in all it's western glory-es-ness... not steampunked...

Alright!! Sunday BBQ Madness!!

VG, you make it sound like we're planning an excursion to the Amazon jungles! And how is it that your folks don't have a BBQ grill? Thats just... un- American! No worries though, i've got a full- size collapsable travel grill i can bring, along with some meats, etc. Maybe some sides, depending on whats needed. So, from what time to what time are we looking at?? And can we get a headcount? I'm coming, probably with 4 ppl in tow. Ohhh, i SO excited!! ok.. calm down... Another piece of advice, bring sunscreen & bug repellant. Never hurts. And drink plenty of water the night before so as to have yourself hydrated properly the day of. Thats my 2 cents....

MA RENI!!! Please come if you can make it! You could flit in and out of the house as you chose...or we could hang out indoors for a while before moving out to the bonfire? There MUST be a pair of stylish flats you like and there gotta be a spray or something for ticks.....right?! >tragic face<

Hathaway- Thanking you kindly for the grill! Um...I can pick other stuff up the day I arrive maybe if folks let me know what foodstuffs are actually consumed at a Yank bbq.....

Do Yanks drink beer at bbq's? I hear your alcoholic beverages generally suck-is that true?!  Tongue Oh and how easy is it to get hold of mead...I gotta have me some mead where there's fire! It's like primal instinct or summit.  Grin

Wren-bird xx  Grin >yay-yay-yay-yay<

p.s. what's succotash? Is this deep south food or AI food?

For head count:  Please, all intending to attend, shoot me a PM, so I can have all heads counted in one nice neat little pile...

Succotash is originally AI, but that means Southern Food...a good deal of the Southern dishes are originally AI.  Succotash is typically a mixture of Lima beans and corn.  I love it, myself...

Hathoway:  Please bring that grill!

Everyone:  Can we get a list of proper BBQ foods and then distribute responsibility for acquiring them?

Wren:  I have home-brewed mead been aging for a little over a year...it should be a nice dry mead.  I reckon it's about time to break it open and bottle it, eh?

Ok been researching the 'All-American Barbecue' and think I've figured the essential foods needed:

Meat
Meat
Meat
Potato Salad
Potatoes
Coleslaw
Baked Beans
Corn Cobs
Cornbread
Watermelon

And....what the hell are 'hushpuppies'??! Ain't they those cute dogs with the floppy ears??!  Tongue

Drinks: Beer
Mead
Lemonade

Everything else it seems is just gravy.....but gravy also tastes good.

Hushpuppies are fried corn- bread. which reminds me, we should bring some corn bread!

Anyone who wants to can find some OK mead at Total Beverage... nothing spectacular but...

I'll bring the grill, some meats, a can o' baked beans and probably some corn bread. VG, i'll PM you soon with whos coming with me & what we're bringing...

Hushpuppies at a barbeque? naw... that's for the seafood dinners...

Wren, While you're in town, be sure to get to a good crab house... a real one, no city 'restaurant' but a newspaper on the table, bare wood floor, jukebox in the corner crab house... with bikers and rednecks and cold beer...

Wren didn't mention deviled eggs or macaroni salads (there are many versions) which seem to be staples at most bbq's as well. I can make deviled eggs unless you would prefer to have something from Wren's list instead. Just let me know Smiley

I will grant you the idea that you might not be familiar with the concept.

boil egg. cut in half and remove yoke.
combine yoke with mayonnaise, mustard, (other items optional I add soy sauce and wasabi) until creamy.
replace yoke mixture back into egg half with spoon. and top with paprika.
chill slightly
