Is wallpaper an option? If so, Victorian patterns include damask. If not, consider medium or dark red.

Kind of depends what look you're going for.  If for example you're going for a study/library feel then fairly deep colours and wood veneers would be the order of the day.

The most important thing is to pick something which is going to work with the features of the room which you can't change rather than trying to impose a 'theme' on it.

I'm going to be difficult here and say...avoid red. Really, lovely though it is, it's very difficult to get to work as a dominant colour for an interior without it looking like you live in either a pub or a giant blood clot. Consider, perhaps, a deep green. Don't go for one colour, either, especially if it's a dark shade, as it'll be oppressive to live with. Team it with, maybe, a gold or parchment shade, to give contrast.
A couple of things worth considering:
Wallpaper: As, thank all that's holy, minimalism (*spit*) is currently going out of favour, there are some pretty amazing wallpapers around at the moment. The better ones aren't cheap, but you don't need to coat the whole room in the stuff, just one wall will do, and paint the rest in a couple of complimentary colours, say one for walls, one (lighter) shade for woodwork and ceiling.
Also, late 19th century furniture is really unfashionable at the moment, which is reflected in current auction prices (1920's Jacobean revival style is at firewood prices, but looks great in the right setting). If you really want period style, go down to your local auction house and pick up something interesting. A nice wardrobe, dressing table, or such. If your budget is seriously tight, then just a chair or two. It'll only cost the same as buying one new from Ikea, if that, yet it'll not only look infinitely better, but it'll last you the rest of your life.

as traitorous as it sounds, many Victorian wallpapers are uh...6 letters, polite form of 'garish'? Some of the plaids should be declared a violation of  the Geneva convention (well, that hardly counts, it's on the cusp of the era, if I remember correctly...which I don't)
I agree with the above; if you have elaborate furniture (which don't come cheap), a simple pattern or color would make things balance better (though I don't know anything about furniture except which end to pick up and move...Wink

Brass and dark woods probably work, depending on your budget.

Yeah the right green can work well in a bedroom. I've had a fairly greyish green in my bedroom for years and it been fine to live with and it goes well with wood. Its Farrow and Ball Breakfast Room Green IIRC.

Ah! Interior decoration... Love it. Not so keen on soft furnishings, but in general it's pretty unbeatable.

There's a hell of a lot of factors in getting a room to look great - The way it faces, where it is, what kind of light you get and all that (For instance, you're on a hiding to nothing if you're trying to Victorianify a modern loft conversion, Velux windows just cut through the mood like a corn thresher through puppies).

First, what's the rough age of your house? Britian is covered in interwar dwellings that, while not massive, can be made quite lovely with a spot of care and compassion.
Do you have high ceilings? It's a pretty important point this - Interwar and after houses are cursed with low ceilings - There's not a day goes past I don't curse this in my current abode with it's damnable not-chandelier-friendly ceilings.
Colour pallete - You seem to have that sorted nicely, a dark wood and green (I'd suggest using two tones of green, a light and dark for different parts), top this off with a few heavy gilt objects and you'll be doing nicely. That said, however, there is always the risk with the darkbrown-green-gold colour scheme that you get it slightly wrong and end up with a bedroom that makes you think of Mint Chocolate.

Dado rails - Perfect for the dining room if you use those chairs, possibly acceptable in some halways. But these things have been creeping out of their place and around houses for years. Don't let it happen here. Just don't.

Lighting! The most important thing ever in decoration - A room with out light is, well, a broken ankle waiting to happen.
Lighting is the key to a room, it's also the think I obsess the most over - A few well thought out and well placed lights can utterly transform a room in a split second - If I hear about a single pendant lamp being used to light a room for most things, then it's all I can do not to call up the deathsquads for some taste-butchery.

Oh.. Find your local architectural reclamation yard, they're all over the country and will provide a wealth of inspiration

Lassco (http://www.lassco.co.uk/) if you're anywhere near them, is worth a day trip. Infact it's worth a trip for anyone - It's amazing!

There are hundreds of yards like them all over the country, find your nearest and go - you'll be inspired.

why don't you use a white?  Its classic, and the order of the day in the average victorian house.

I believe that Steampunk is more than just brass and watchparts. It's finding a way to combine the past and the future in an aesthetic pleasing way. It's living a life that looks old-fashioned, yet speaks to the future.

See if you can get this book.  Absolutely jam-packed with little period details and very informative.  If you're lucky the local library will have it, or should be able to order it for you.
