Yes! The steampunk holidays are approaching. For these that are not aware of the finer points of these holidays, I shall explain a little.
In years past upon this forum, Gogglemas was celebrated with gifts, usually hand-made or novelties, mailed to other forum members, which, usually as you might imagine, were goggles or steampunky items, and it falls on the last day of February, (pay attention to these leap years!).
This year, that is February 28th!
The items were QUITE LOVELY! I still of course cherish my present!
I bring this up, because as I recall from one of these holidays, someone said something quite pertinent and I paraphrase: "Perhaps you couldn't do something special for Christmas either because of no time or no money, but perhaps you could swing it now." So, with these hallowed days approaching, I would like to give everyone advance notice, and to have a thread where we can have all the discussions and jubilations. I of course volunteer for whatever capacity is needed, but if you all have someone in mind that has a stainless reputation, by all means, nominate that person!
Now, from past experiences, I would like to make some suggestions. I recommend that you try (it isn't a hard and fast rule, not at all, just be prepared for very long delays if using certain postal rates) to keep within your geographical regions (U.S., Europe, etc etc) because postal services seem a little wonky when it goes overseas. Alas, I learned my lesson, with either an unacceptably long delay of acknowledgment of delivery or lack thereof. If I am ever to send something overseas again, I think I shall employ the premium versions of the postal services offered, like Priority Mail USPS or FedEx. Pricier, but with more assurance of speed and reliability. Also, no one likes to hear about this, but it has to be said: The issue of (I recall how a certain lady put it) "slackers and latebods" and in addition moochers. I have a solution that may work, (for these in the United States, anyway), the use of delivery confirmation receipts. Sending these both to the "holiday coordinator" and the recipient would establish an alibi, so to speak. It might be a little... harsh, but there are few things that spoil things than a failure of the spirit of reciprocity.
These steampunk holidays are intended to be informal and glad events, nothing big. A $20 or under limit should more than suffice for the presents, if I may put it out there.
NOTE:
Well, I recall, that for one of my successful mailings overseas, it took something like a month.
So perhaps a recommendation for anyone sending packages overseas to celebrate Gogglemas to have a deadline of Feb. 1st to 10th?
And for anyone that is mailing within their own geographical region, about two weeks at most, generally, so Feb. 15th for that deadline. Those that have already signed-up or signaled intentions to join:
* Captain Quinlin Hopkins (possible), lives in U.S.A.
* ms_boo_dreadful (possible), lives in U.S.A
* Prof Eumides Blakehurst (possible), lives in Australia, but willing to mail internationally.
* Albrecht (potential), lives in Germany." I am happy to receive whatever they think is appropriate. DYI Steampunk stuff is obviously valued the most. As to what I will send as a gift: I am doing DIY Steampunk jewelry. I already have plans for ladies and gentlemen."
I shall of course step in with a gift if the number of participants is an odd number.
I know this is a bit short of these that are just coming in, but fear not! There is always Air Kraken Day, which I shall put a thread up shortly! I shall try to get things rolling by messaging these that have already joined up.
To Wit:
