"Night of the Cooters" by Howard Waldrop

This short story collection has three great stories that fans of the victorian era/old west should check out:

"Night of the Cooters" Wells' "War of the Worlds" Martians land near a Texas town... a well armed Texas town.

"The Passing of the Western" written as an homage to Western films... but westerns in an alternate reality where steampunk inventors brought rain and fertility to the old west

"Fin de Cyclé" leading lights of late 1800's Paris (including Alfred Jarry, Georges Méliès) work together to make a landmark film regarding the Affaire Dreyfus... in a world where all of Paris is obsessed with cycles (bicycles, tricycles, quadcycles etc) and human powered gyro-craft

Thanks for mentioning FIN DE CYCLE, I was going to mention it here.

I was going to write a story with a very similar setting, then I read Waldrop's story and I stopped writing fiction for two years.  No joke.

Thanks, I'm working on it.

My current project involves anarchists in an alternate-history Hawaii
