I blame Natalie Wood.
I was already a SF and comics geek from as far back as I can remember.
I was also somewhat girl-crazy at the tender age of 10, and I remember that my first major crush was on the actress Natalie Wood.
I believe ! was around 12 when channel-surfing on the family tv one late Friday night, when I discovered a movie with her I had never seen before. The production values were lush, the comedy old fashioned slapstick, and the costumes, particularly Ms. Wood's, sublime. And the cars, dude, the CARS!
I was doomed. The name of the movie was The Great Race, and it is to this day my favorite all time flick.
It is also, in my estimation, the Greatest Steampunk Movie Ever Made. ^_^
Amazingly, it was that same year (maybe even the same MONTH) that while trawling the paperback book section of my local Woolworth's that I discovered a book named Warlord of The Air by a writer I never had heard of: Michael Moorcock.
Soon followed the pastiches of Ron Goulart and Phillip Jose Farmer (that whole “World Newton” thing), which led to the classics of Burroughs, Verne, Haggard and Wells.
DAW paperbacks was a one-publisher renaissance of Victorian themed fantasy and science fiction back then, my absolute favorite being “The Island Snatchers” by British writer George H. Smith.
* sigh * I miss those little yellow-spined books…

Prof, I always loved The Great Race. In fact, TCM recently showed it as part of their month dedicated to Natalie Woods. As far as I'm concern, the gorgeous Natalie Woods is a good enough reason for me.  ~ Larry |

Hello fellow Texans! I'm entirely new to the SP community however, like most other communities I'm vested in, I'm ready to jump in without looking and have begun designing my costume.  I'm heavily into Renaissance faires, my wife and I have each sewn/bought/crafted a wardrobe for the each of us and the kids. And I'm also looking to start some form of Pirate meet up group as sadly I cannot find a single one here in Houston... which from where I live is 45 min or less from Galveston. How dismal. So with that long wind, I'm highly excited to get my start with Steampunk. I absolutley love the genre. |

Well, I didn't find an introductory thread, so here goes. (Move as you deem necessary.)
I just stumbled upon the whole steampunk culture earlier today and must say I'm impressed. I haven't found anything this cool/intriguing in the scifi field since Firefly. I reside way over here in Lubbock and am attending Texas Tech in the fall.
So, is anyone even remotely close to the West TX area? Or is this going to be like the TX Browncoat community where all the action is in Austin, DFW, and maybe Houston?

Well, might as well pop in and say hello. I've been on the board for a couple of months now, but don't pop down into this sub forum very often. I'm from the Central Texas area, between Temple and Waco. Greetings Texas Steampunks! We recently relocated from Maryland where we were members of UCSDL (Upper Chesapeake Steam Defense League) to Dallas. I was born in Texas but have been away for many years. Now that my husband and I are both retired we have moved back to Texas to be closer to my family. Yes, we do know about Texas summers. That is the first question we are asked when anyone learns that we have moved here from Maryland.
Both my husband and I are long time fans of science fiction and collectors of several areas of Victorianna. When we read Gibson's Difference Engine we were smitten although we did now know we were Steampunkers for many years untill I stumbled on Brass Goggles.
We enjoyed being part of the UCSDL although our life has been rather hectic recently and we were not able to participate in all the activities. Is there a Dallas area group interested in costume and technology (we are not much into speampunk music) that would welcome us?
