I suppose the artisans around here don't go to Wal-Mart for a Christmas gift. What did you create for your beloved? Or, what are you creating right now?
I won't post the pics before time as my flickr account is known in the family, but I bought some ready-made wooden thingies (chests, glasses case, kitchen utensils), varnished them and decorated with etched brass plates. This is the easy part (except for finding the tiny screws to mount them).
Right now, a flash drive casing and a large-size desk lamp are still under construction, near complete. I'll show them off after Christmas.
I found that creating SP artifacts for a deadline is a very demanding race. You cannot start over. So, some of them will be a bit rushed.

While it might not be very steamy I did make cookies, homemade candy, and wreaths to give out to my friends and family. I also added a brilliant piece of holly to my recently acquired stetson.

due to a terrible miscalculation of scale, I knitted some giant slippers for my mother. i only realised when I started to sew them up yesterday. They will work well as oversocks for clown shoes, but otherwise are of limited practical use...

A whole pork-shoulder, braised in red wine, onions, garlic and herbs. Now, my family has called to postpone. I will not have to cook again for at least a week..  A half-pint-jar of "Secret Mulling Spice" and some "Vegan Bacon" (applewood-smoked sliced red onions) for the other family-member who loves to cook. Everything else, alas, is purchased |

I think i bit of more than i can chew this year lol. A belt,harness corsety thing (cant think of any other way to explain it  ) a bracer A pair of goggles and a small cuff. This is how they stand tonight, a few late nights needed i think.  |

Acting on an absolutely last minute whim, I took the bold leap and decided to make Christmas Crackers for the rest of my extended family - all eighteen of them. I'll be sure to post a how-to and a post holiday report on how they go over.

Christmas E-card sort of thing (see 2nd Art Thread)
Considering making a few new carved-leather eyepatches; what started as Dr.'s suggestion has become Dr.'s orders; wear an eyepatch over the dominant eye for a certain number of hours each day, or when eyestrain and double vision ensue...but I keep losing my eyepatches, and the storebought ones don't provide enough coverage or light--blocking characteristics.
That's about it.

Finished the flash drive and got the lamp into working condition. It is a large lighthouse, still needs some tweaking and will have its poorly painted windows replaced once the shops open again. Luckily, it was a gift to my wife, so I can continue with it. I can say this was the most stressful Christmas race to date, with long nights and dawns spent with the drill and the copper sulphate. I'll need to plan forward next year. Or go back to shopping. Photos later.

Whilst I haven't actually made anything for Christmas, as I'm in the habit of sending New Years Cards to friends this year I decided not to buy any but rather to find a few pleasant 19th Century designs on the aether, print them on high quality paper (about 200 gsm I think) and use my new dip-pens to write them.
Not too much effort expended but I hope it shows my friends I think more of them than to send something about 7 million other people are also going to get.

Madame Governess, I fear that I'm a day too late to give a suggestion, but I shall add my two cents all the same. If they were knitted out of wool, then a quick trip through the washing machine might render them perfectly-sized felt slippers. Just a thought! |

Tues, my friend Jen called and asked if i could build a rocketship car for her little guy. guess he's been going on that Santa was gonna bring him a rocketship car. the deadline was crazy. i found the car on line(used) and managed to get it started. we snapped a couple few pictures and made up a top secret document of the rocketship car that's currently under construction for him. |

Tues, my friend Jen called and asked if i could build a rocketship car for her little guy. guess he's been going on that Santa was gonna bring him a rocketship car. the deadline was crazy. i found the car on line(used) and managed to get it started. we snapped a couple few pictures and made up a top secret document of the rocketship car that's currently under construction for him. I say you are a skilled gentleman! Personally I am working on a Christmas present to myself, a computer headset made from an old telephone operators headset, and I bought myslef a soldering iron just for the purpose... Didn't have time to make anything for people for christmas though, which is a shame. Maybe next year. |

I sent a bundle of wands I carved out of oak dowels to some of our friends in Illinois to hand out as they pleased to our other friends up there. Now I'm wishing I'd thought to take pictures of a few of them.
For family, the wife and spawn and I made batches of candy and cookies (our daughter did the pouring, the cutting and the decorating). Beyond that, most of the gifts this year were bought, from stores and from other craftspeople.

Nothing much. I did wire up the bows on the gifts I gave with some LEDs and some button cells so they'd glow, but that was about it. Not very steamy and quite a hack, but they did look kinda cool, especially the red ones.

its actually 5 pieces of wood. i purchased a 1/2" piece of oak and 2, 1/4" pieces of poplar. i glued the 3 pieces together then used some of the cut off pieces of oak for the grip and stock ends. |

I made a simplistic r2d2 and c3po for my daughter to paint and decorate out of simple household/crafty things. My wife made earrings and fairy costumes for nieces and our daughter. She also made me various steamy things (see http://brassgoggles.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,20984.msg480486.html#msg480486). At school, my daughter made me a small box made up of coloured icypole sticks. Though I did send my wife on a treasure hunt to find various presents. It started with a card that said "follow the white rabbit" and ended with American McGee's Alice pc game hidden in a wooden kitchen hutch (a type of cabinet/shelving unit). I kept things simple so I didn't end up with a divorce :^) The one thing I didn't want to make her was mad. I leave the insanity all up to me! |

I usually do gift baskets. like one year I made plates with folded mapkins and layed out crackers, cheeses, nuts and fruit. in decorative arrangments. then a book that suits the reciever underneath the plate.
Then I did a coffee cups with coffees and cocoa powders, chocolate dipped spoons ect.
they pretty much all have maching complete place settings now.
this year I resorted to a stinky basket. Fragrance spray, body lotion, hand soaps and lip balms. scented candles and chocolate truffles.
It's not really steamy and it's not super impressive but it's easier to personalise by picking things for each person that suit them. You can get sample packs and assortments cheaply and take them apart to make gift baskets, and you can mix things from differant companies that compliment each other. The cost is comparable with some of the cheaper gift baskets out there but so much more control and personalisation to them.
Maybe I'll have to come up with some steam punk gift baskets. that could be fun. I've already got designs to make goth and other themed baskets, why not?
