Just checked out what it'd cost to get me there. I'm pleasantly surprised to say that round trip, bus and train, is about $250, which is half of the cost of the plane ticket. Sure, I spend a day in travel each way, and six hours waiting in Vancouver in the wee hours of the morning, but that is a price that even my mother can approve of.

Now, if I could only find a hotel close to the event that isn't going to set my bank account on fire and dance upon it.

Try the Red Roof Inn or the Jet Motel.  They are the two closest inexpensive motels.  I cannot vouch for their conditions, but they are quite close.

Just checked out the Rodeway Inn. Its about $60 Canadian per night, and just around the corner. Holy crap.

I think I spent more on a trip within the province last June. I remember the cost of the hotel being double that.

I'm loving how cheap this is going to be. Mind you, I'll probably spend triple that at the 'Con, but still.

Well it's going to be in two hotels this year on either side of the street,
and when my friend and I went up the hotel rate was $109 a night. Split with he and I it was super cheap really. The rooms were quite large, and the staff were amazing. They also have an atrium and indoor pool.
I've not a clue what the other hotel will be like but I choose to believe it will be splendid as well.
I'm sure if you look around on here, or facebook, you'll find postings for folks who are going and looking to split the cost of a room or often car fare.  I'm hoping to land in Seattle in the afternoon on the Big Day and probably visit some family way up North go out and eat... Then take the light rail for $2 to the air port and ride a free shuttle bus as provided by the hotel (s). It was a much easier trip than I ever expected.
So Miss I take it you're in?

For the record, my husband was not at SCI, he had to stay home for health reasons. We are hoping he can attend this year. If you saw me with someone they were just a friend, of which I had many there in attendance.

I'm absolutely in.  Grin

Was looking into sharing a room with someone, but he isn't going to be in a position to go this year. I'm content to stay in a room by myself, though. I have never stayed in a hotel alone. I'm sure that'll be an adventure in itself.

I need to bring a video camera or something for my journey there and back. I have a feeling that some of the best parts of the trip aren't even going to be while I'm at the convention.

Yea I regret not having a proper camera / much less a video camera last year.
This time I should be better prepared.
Staying in a hotel room by your self I think isn't that bad; staying with you people you don't "know"
before hand has always been kind of weird to me.

I drive cross country every year by myself, it's not so bad as long as you are careful and stay aware of your surroundings you'll be fine.

I've even found sharing a hotel room with classmates on band trips has been weird, even if I have known them for three years.

An excellent piece of advice, Lilibat. I've never even been out of the city alone, let alone the country. I'll definitely be careful.

I am pleased to report that I have convinced my wife and my roommates to attend. So we will be heading to SteamCon for the first time. And we are all very excited to come.

I look forward to meeting you all there, as well as working our way up to the 'Con.   Grin

I am excited to say that my husband and I will be attending this, our first big Steampunk event (Actually, our first Steampunk event, period). It was my husband, who had such a good time this past weekend at the Faerieworld Winter Festival masked ball, who decided that the Con would be even more fun. We will be driving up from So. Oregon. I've never been to Seattle, so this will be a real adventure. Cheesy

Just because they are may of leather and brass, doesn't make the wings any less real.  Smiley

The Yay was not for the no faeries...I was just saying that, since Steamcon is a steamy event, and not a fairy event like Fairyworld, there will not be fairies (or, not as many, I guess?).

I do think I must get myself together and go this year Cheesy I live in Seattle, so I really have no excuse. Probably go by myself, as none of my friends are into this.
And I have a delightful range of costume ideas~

Are you part of the Seattle Steamrats?  They meet on Mondays at a coffee shop in Seattle.  Sadly, I have not been, since Mondays are the WORST day for me to do anything besides work and come home and sleep. Tongue

No, sadly. I'm part of an ochm study group and a genetics study group though Tongue School owns me, but I sometimes escape on weekends.

Artvixn,
Two suggestions for two movies to be played if there will be a theatre this year: Tempus Ex Machina and the restored Metropolis.
I watched Tempus Ex Machina at Steamcon and was impressed.  Hopefully the creator of the film, Andrew Fogel, would be there again to talk about the film.
I saw in another thread that the film Metropolis has been restored along with some lost footage.  I think that would be a great movie to show.

Thanks for your work,
