One of my absolute favorites is Adrian Ward's 1907 aero engined Chater Lea.
I want to build a hot-rod version of this with a straight six.

I want to build a roadster using the flathead straight six i pulled from one of my Kaisers.  Its a beautiful engine that deserves to be in a hoodless car.  I like the looks of the Chater Lea, good start for a SP car.

I'm thinking i'll be using the straight 6 and running gear out of my Jag in a rod when it eventually goes rusty enough that i cant be bothered to weld it for another MOT test, which it will.

Not Steampunk, but I could envision a steam engine in one of those :

And the drive train, in its complexity, could well be the one of a steam engine :

Notice the double power axle going from the transfert box to the rear or the front weel ? Yep, that car has a power axle for wheels on the right and another one for wheels on the left... Why make it easy ?  Grin

My crew runs a full-scale replica Russian BA-64B, but my first love in the Rollin' Iron department is the Roll Royce Armoured Car.  Someday, precious.

Hello everyone,

Here are a couple of examples of Tom Brogden's work. The man is a genious. These are perfect steampunk vehicles;

I have also recently seen the film 'Igor' which has some interesting steam carriages towards the end of the story.

Cheers,

That large armored 6x6 seems to be employing a device that was also used on half-tracks.  It turns out, if a truck has tons of grip and go, it will attempt to dig into a hill rather than drive up it.  The solution was some sort of roller on the front bumper:

Following the halftrack link led me to find out about Kettenkrads - awesome half-tank-half-motorbike hybrids...

Ever heard the expression, "A camel is a horse designed by committee"?

Those Kettenkrads are effectively amphibious, as long as you keep your head above water.  What's always bugged me is the german expression for operating this vehicle- is it "ridden" or "driven"?  You drive a tank, you ride a motorcycle.

The difference is usually are you on or in the vehicle, and this one is sort of halfsies.  Half heavy off-road tractor, half light scout vehicle.  The perfect combo!  I wonder why they didn't make more of them. :|

The one with the Jet Engine reminds me of what is used to blow away snow on runways...  Wink

As for the rolling wheel on the 6x6, there are 2 sets of them... One in the front and one in between front and rear wheel. The idea being that when going across a trench, you won't get stuck on the opposite side of it. Finally, the wheels in the middle are meant for not getting stuck passing a steep ridge. Those are not powered. And that 6x6 predates the M3 Halftrack. It was common for all terrain vehicles in the 30'...

Those are great, Mr. Payphone, especially the rail vehicles! I fear, however, that the impending "Zombie Apocalypse" will turn out to be a "run what you brung" type of affair.

These are what I have on hand as of this writing:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Plus a 1971 Triumph Bonneville motorcycle, a 1981 Chevrolet pick-up, and a 1995 Subaru, and three small boats.

Hope they're up to the task...it might be sooner than anyone thinks!

Thistlewaite

Sarn't Major, is that second car a Buick 8? You want the oil checked? (Bonus pionts for the SK reference  Grin).
And that looks like a Ford-Ferguson, as far as I can see it.

Yes. 1950 Buick Special, Straight 8. The tractor is a 1943 Ford 2N, Ferguson contract. The other vehicles are a 1973 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, a 1977 Marmon Cabover Tractor, Class 8 Heavy, with a tow rig which you can't see in the photo. The Jeep is a 1972 Commando.

Sorry for the crappy photo quality...I've gotten a new camera, but I haven't installed the software yet.

Looks like it can easily go over water, snow, sand and mud.

But is it really the best design for driving over the bodies of my enemies as I power forward to gain dominion over the world?

I'd have went for something with big wheels, oh and with spikes.

Thistlewaite, your fleet looks like you have some space to accumulate cars.  The ole lady and I can't wait to buy some land so we can accumulate old vehicles.  As it is we have a 76 Blazer (by that time the cab had a roof just because some bozos drove them rubber side up) and a 48 Spartanette "can of ham" trailer (see here: http://brassgoggles.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,10804.0.html )

Classic cars on rail from my galloping geese collection:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Bonus:  Most of these true rail cars (as opposed to the few highway-rail examples) have turntables.  Seems like a big pain to build one in and turn the car around every time.  Why did they do it?  10 steampunk points if you can figure it out.
