i will make this short, aliens maybe, criptozooology yes, mythology no...
that said, if some nut somewhere thinks its still real today, then go for it, but unicorns powered airships.... thats just silly...
Fool...just wait till the ninja unicorn pirates storm your airship at 30,000 feet and you'll see the horror...almost as bad as those dreadful six legged spiders ninjas......

Six legged spiders ninjas...? Surely they must be more like ant people. No self respecting spider ninja would be caught dead with out eight legs!(unless of course he lost them during battle)

Ah Eight Legged Spider Ninjas, now there is a foe worthy of a fight! Also, surely beasts from Cryptozoology and Mythology cross over and the lines become blurred so I would say a possibility of beasts from Myth and Legend.
Aliens, now there is a subject that could open a galaxy of opportunities, Martian Warriors, Venusian Princesses, Molten Golems from Mercury I'm sure the list is endless

I'm currently in a science-fiction LARP where they have steampunk technology, wich is also made by goblins. I've even got a steampunk goblin just because I liked the idea, only haven't been able to play her yet.

you see... goblins, unicorns, half spider ninjas... if you allow them to cross over then you are just LARPing again... you aren't contributing anything to the reality of the culture... I'm not going to go tell someone that bigfoot isn't real, that there isn't a sabertoothed cat running about canada, that the chupakabra didn't eat their goat, that a thunderbird isn't stalking their puppy, that a mothman didn't warn them of danger.... but yea, I'm going to say 'no, there is no troll under that bridge, you silly silly man" hell, vampires, wearwolves, ghosts, demons, zombies, dragons and witches are fine with me because there are still a few nuts out there who believe in them... i just cant get behind the idea of a Wilden half elf mechanic with -5 charisma 'walking amongst us' i play d&d but come on folks... keep the dice in your pocket, swill a couple beers and challenge a norm or two...

So do you strum a steampunk goblin, or bow it? Or do steampunk goblins belong in the percussion section? (Please tell me it isn't a wind instrument!)

If vampires, werewolves, ghosts, demons, zombies, dragons and witches are fine, then how can goblins and unicorns, and any other mythological/legendary creature be wrong? Goblins are just as much a part of folklore as vampires or anything else you said was okay. My main steampunk area of interest is kind of a switching around of the thread title, I am a huge fan of steampunk themes and technology in Fantasy worlds. When it comes to literature and artwork with that mixture I can't help but be enthrallled by it. While I no-longer play Magic the Gathering, haven't for a good 6-7 years, I still love the artwork and worlds it has spawned...especially some of the weird technology. I really wish there were more artwork books for it produced. And that's just a couple of the goblins.

I just found it odd that you would be okay with a list of a half dozen "fantastical" creatures of which there is little believed factual evidence if any and not okay with other creatures which are in exactly the same boat when it comes to evidence.
To me there's just as much chance of there being Goblins/Wee Folk rooting about somewhere or being mischievous as there is of something like Demons existing.

I have to agree with Nex here - theres really nothing to stop you using fantasy creatures in a steampunk world, and I don't think you can have some creatures and leave out others; it's entirely up to the author or creator of that world. I don't think every element in a steampunk world or culture has to be in itself steampunk, just fit in, and I think the vast majority of fantasy stuff does. That doesn't mean it has to be used in every context though, but I don't think anyone is suggesting it does. -Matt

As much as I dislike Games Workshop as a company some of the worlds they have cobbled together by trawling all corners of Fantasy and Science Fiction for "inspiration" are wonderful. let me guess... atheist?
Quite the opposite actually, I believe anything is possible on the Deity/Supernatural/Mythological front I just won't go as far as to say 100% something does exist without having seen evidence I think I can trust.

Why Yes, one of my hobbies is LARPing, although it is oWoD so less "lightning bolt" and more "Dementation"
I'm all for the inclusion of whatever makes you feel happy, it isn't going to be to everyone's tastes but it is the differences that make the world go round.
Also, Goblin Tinkerers, the most dangerous thing known anywhere........ever

...I believe we haven't met yet. But indeed, LARP is less " lightningbolt" and more roleplaying as one might think. Hell, I know no other place where one can play a nun with MPD or a wacky goblin for that matter without getting put into a nutty house.

and im out... LARPers.... lightning bolt lightning bolt.... Don't be so quick to disparage, Sir. LRP is a fun hobby, and the majority of us can dissociate fantasy and reality. And back to the mythological beasts............ ............. I like my steampunk literature mythology free, personally, but can't see why, if people wish to include beasties in whatever, that they should not do so.

Don't want to go off topic too much, but I love the quote in your signature. Great movie. Thank you! Coincidentally, that movie has a rather large number of bizarre aliens, and is thoroughly steampunk. So aliens could work, depending on the setting.
