What are your thoughts on fantasy creatures (fairies, scientific creations, aliens, etc.) in a steampunk world, specifically as personas? I've seen a few of them like a steampunk fairy and a vampire, but still only a few. Other than being hunted, searched for, examined and made, do you think they can take active roles in steampunk? Part of an airship crew, for example, or other practical endeavors?

Selkie I don't see why it would be a problem. Though if you go with a selkie as your name suggests you might be best off having your character in a setting near water.*thinks you sound very familiar*

We all talk about air kraken and dragons, and heck, there are mummified faries over in the tactile section  I think we veiw them very well ... then shoot them and taxidermy them  |

I think fantasy/mythical type creatures are wonderful in a SP environment. Especially with a bit of hollandaise sauce in the main dinning room of an airship at 30,000 feet and a nice gin with it.  |

 It's very bad luck to harm a selkie, you know, including eating one. But back to the possibility of fantasy creatures having a purpose other than being part of the food chain or being hung over someone's mantle, I recall seeing a drawing of a steampunk harpy delivering parcels on Deviantart.

As steampunk is a time of discovery, in my opinion i think it's find to have new made up creature to discover. Simply because in reality there isn't much more to discover! Its adds a bit of excitement and fantasy, and Even if you on the side of "strictly no magic" it still kind of fits.
Like air Karens for example. They've been wildly accepted as a steampunk fantasy creature.

When (If ) fairy hunting, iron flechettes do the trick nicely. Kills the buggers dead, and doesn't mess up the hide too badly.
I'm all for fantasy creatures in a SP setting.If that's what folk desire why the hell not! We have time machines, zeppelin pirates, and all manner of clockwork monstrosites, a few more oddities won't hurt the mix (and may prove tasty)

I don't see why there would be any problem at all, seeing as how steampunk is a fantasy itself. Bring in elves, demons, fae, unicorns, ogres, trolls, orcs, dwarves (actually orcs and dwarves are pretty steamy anyway, when you think about it). Once again, one of the great things about steampunk is that you can mold it into any shape you want, there is no set definition of what it is or isn't. Why can't you have a steampunked bugbear thug? Or a dwarf that's a steamy mechanic? How about a Victorian era dark elf street urchin? Or a steamy fae thief? The possibilities are endless. ^_^

In the particular (peculiar?) version of the Steampunk World that lives in my head, the fae (European and Japanese) races abound (some have been trusted family retainers since before 1066..) and the dreaded Others of the Ch'Thulhu Mythos rave and howl at the blurred edges of Reality, requiring constant vigilance by those who must guard the Borders. I suppose one could include some fantasy elements as well |

My selkie persona is still in development, but I think she might live on an island somewhere in the sea of time that is connected to various bodies of water throughout periods of history. One trip she could be in the Middle Ages, the next the Stone Age and so on, with each expedition she could bring back items from that era.
