You really wanna see sparks fly, bring up this topic on a wargaming forum with Americans (who like to paint schwasticas on their model tanks, because the German Army at the time did so) and Germans (where it really could be considered illegal, depending on circumstances).

Ahem, forgetting the Schutzstaffel, are we? [...] and Germans (where it really could be considered illegal, depending on circumstances).
To quote... The German (and Austrian) postwar criminal code makes the public showing of the Hakenkreuz (the swastika) and other Nazi symbols illegal and punishable, except for scholarly reasons. It is even censored from the lithographs on boxes of model kits, and the decals that come in the box. Some modellers would prefer to stencil on the swastika, or perhaps buy separate decals if possible. It is also censored from the reprints of 1930s railway timetables published by the Reichsbahn. The eagle remains, but appears to be holding a solid black circle between its talons. The swastikas on Hindu and Jain temples are exempt, as religious symbols cannot be banned in Germany.

i fear german men won´t wear uniforms in public Is military reenactment not popular in Germany? Here we're big on our own Civil War and Medieval reenactment. I here tell that the north American west circa late 1800 is popular in Briton.
What's popular there?
The English Civil War is a popular one here - plenty of re-enactors who want to run around waving replica swords and bellowing Brian Blessed-style. It does look fun, although I wasn't terribly impressed by the chap yelling at his squad to "come on guys, focus!" in the event I saw a while ago - I never knew David Brent was a Cavalier... Generally what I see is that people who have military vehicles seek out the matching clothing, but I'm not sure how much actual re-enacting goes on. I think it's more a case of the battledress being ideal for use around vehicles, especially padded headgear for AFV owners! I have heard of a group that re-enacts WW2 Wehrmacht but minus the swastikas. They specialise in making neo-nazis look very silly indeed, as apparently they just stop and walk off or glare stonily if they encounter Hitler salutes or other pro-nazi rubbish. The swastika is also removed from models of German trains depicting that era - on the lone example I have the circle held in the claws of the eagle merely has a mottled black and silver finish resembling a grille.

That's one thing* that always pissed me off about the Nazis. They were such snappy dressers.
I always wanted to do a Nazi uniform but replace the swastikas with the emblem from Cobra...
*There are other things, obviously, but that one does irritate me...

Originally, they were brown. In the 1932-94 period, they were black. 1934-1938, they were earth-brown. 1939-1945, they were gray and gray-green.

I met a guy at a con with a brilliant idea for this kind of thing (though I'm not sure it would be enough in Germany). He had his whole non-nazi outfit ready, then he took all the badges, pins, patches, buckles, and various other bling and dumped them all out on the table in front of about a half dozen women -- not freaks, but not the soccer-mom type, either. They went through the stuff, commenting, and pointing out anything that stuck them as frightening, offensive, obnoxious, or a turn-off in general. Anything the girls nixed got ground off with the dremmel tool. Now he's got a great non-nazi outfit that totally gives the desired impression but on close examination leaves nothing truely offensive in the details.

That's actually where I got the idea, though he had a lot more pieces to vet than I did.

fascinating reading. O yes i love a man in uniform and i love hearing about peoples take on things.
Pockynightmare, great flag, brill idea and having lived in germany i totally understand the attitude towards things and i actually find americans to be the most vocal against anything that even touches ww2 with the rest of us trailing behind. (just my personal experience, it's not directed towards anyone)
I've had a long discussion about this with a few people as i was going to go to a cosplay event in a uniform that upon quick glance looks like an SS one and everyone was in two minds about me doing it.
Lordwraste: you should totally get that jacket, it's HOT.

Yes there is such a group- a friend of mine at university is a member of it. Here is the link to their site/

I so very, very much regret that I didn't get called into service. But then again, almost no one is these days over here, unless they say that they want to make a career out of it, and that yes they will have a whole lot of free time on their hands for the next two or three years... Goddamnit, if I can ace the tests and then lug an MSG90 with ammunition and my regular field kit and a Gustav for ten miles at a jog that should entitle me to at least a pair of uniform pants right there on the spot...
I hate Sweden.

Microsoft got in a bit of trouble (well, actually, they quickly avoided trouble) with an ad on their webpage. It was supposed to be people raising their hands as if to ask a question, but they were all raising their right hands, not quite vertically...It was hilarious. I wish I still had the picture.

No, I'm not insane, thank you. Five years? I'd rather try for an American citizenship and then the Marines, I think... Alright, alright... It's an option. But forgive me if I'd like to try to be able to have some other aspirations and keep up an actual relationship at some point...

hehe. i understand completely. I have regretted not being a man myself on occasion though. it seems like a tough, but viable option if you´re sick of everything else. I contemplated joining the German airforce, but two points kept me from it: I am too short to fly helicopters and too blind to fly jets, and I am not great at taking pointless commands if the first point had not been there, I might have been able to work through the second one, but this way it was pointless.

I'd be fine if I could either join Q branch or SAS I think. Although I think my driving style might not endear me to the latter. There are vast numbers of vehicles that I've driven without destroying or at least expensively damaging...
