So, ah, does anyone know of a a program that will cycle desktop images on a regular basis?  Per login, per x days, whatever...

Yes. We have one. It slows down the computer. I do not know where it came from, sorry.

Microsoft has a wallpaper changer program for XP available here: http://tinyurl.com/ho8h
You can alter the wallpaper change frequency from 15 min - 1 week, even preset a daily wallpaper for every day of the year.

Not sure if this would be considered steamy enough, but this is what I use for a background:

Wow, these are great.  I used Kazu Kibuishi's images from Flight for a while, too.
Here are a few from Shorpy, the 100-year-old photoblog:

Radio equipment - perhaps my favorite Shorpy photo!
Luftschiff Zeppelin from behind
Locomotives in color - would have to be cropped.
Coal-handling device for a steel smelter - has patches of contrast that make it less suitable for a desktop, but that could be modified...
Shasta Dam tower - Tricky to turn into a desktop... but doesn't that look like an awesome villain's HQ?
Respirator man! - also a bit low on desktop potential, but very steampunk.

I'm not sure if anyone clicked through to see one of the inspirations for the thread on CGtalk, you simply must go to this man's blog and ogle.

I found this wallpaper today, and it is quite literally a wallpaper

http://5thirtyone.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/01/dark_victorian_1024x768.jpg

Victorian style patterns and colors it piqued my interest.
