Men often have an easier time picking up belly dance, as their musculature better lends itself to the isolated movements.
I am learning belly dance. It is quite a challenge, but absolutely worth it!

Male, but I have known a few bellydancers ;] there where never enough occasions for them to apply the skill/art So I say: Look up Bolero. Mmmm, male bellydancers are yum. We have a male occasionally run classes at the place I'm learning.
I'm learning, and love it. I don't think adding gears is entirely necessary to make it steamy though. Just the right choice of cloth and clothing. I'm going to a new years steampunk event this year and will hopefully be doing the bellydancer thing for it... though being away for a chunk of time right before new years this may not happen :/

There should definately be more male dancers, I keep trying to persuade my other half to learn, but he's not keen! If you ever get the chance to see Ozgen perform, he is the most amazing dancer. Wonderful turkish gypsy moves.

I know some, my sister tried to get me to learn and I did some of it with her. But really, any dance music and I'm up and dancing around.  My favorite kind is anything with an Asian or Middle Eastern twist. |

I sought to learn bellydancing, but then I saw what outfits the males were wearing for performances, and I said to meself: "I could never pull off 'gay Alladin'". Now, (and apparently I'm of an unpopular opinion here), when I see a bellydancing performance (formal OR informal) and there's a dude up there, I pretty much feel: "Get out the way, ya damned fool, yer blocking the view of the dancers."
In my defense, however, I think ALL MEN SHOULD LEARN TO DANCE! I did African dance for a year, Capoeira for three years, and Ballroom for year, focusing on the Waltz and the Tango. And of course I hit the clubs on the regular.
How you gonna pretend you're a good lover when you don't know how to dance, fellas? And it's a fun way to get in shape. You oughta see the ladies reaction to a male dancer's sculpted body.

Thankyou Auntie, for posting this.
I dance in various styles and Belly is one of them. My teacher is the fabulous Pauline who gave a workshop and performed at The Asylum. Her classes are always fun and the feeling of sisterhood is strong. We dance to a wide range of unusual music incl our own mixes -- We are the Borg/ Firestarter and War of the Worlds. Our Dance style is B.T.S. British Tribal, so is a mix of traditional Egyptian, Turkish, A.T.S. and our own twist.
For the British bit we sometimes have the Major in his kilt playing a bodhram!
Our routines are un choreographed, so every performance is different!
I am no expert but just LOVE to dance.
So come the Asylum we should have quite a few steampunk belly dancers. YAY,

Steampunk belly dance inspiration. I know there are other dancers out there, what gets your hips shaking? x for me the song comes first always. for instance... Johnny hollows cover of people are strange. It's such a mournful cover so I focused on the idea of being caught in the rain.
another parasol dance this time to man on the burning tightrope by firewater, I liked the idea of taking the circus tight rope and pretending to use the parasol as a balencing tool
and lastly I was recently hired to bellydance with abney park for steamcon, the song airship pirates screamed out for sword dancing and that is what I did
so my whole point, I start with the song and it tells you everything else. |

My daughter, Tesla's Coil, and I both belly dance. We have for 3.5 years. We started after my daughter had problems with a rude ballet teacher that caused us to leave that studio. At the studio we dance at we can take Neo Tribal(an ATS variation sort of) Turkish, and Egyptian Cabaret. Right now I am only doing the Turkish class, because I have been having some ankle trouble. I am rather heavy, and I take advanced classes, which do push my limits sometimes. Tesla's Coil takes Turkish and Egyptian Cabaret. I say that she is learing the fine art of belly dance, and I am am taking an excersize class, even though we are taking the same class. Our Turkish style teacher has been going to Turkey and studying with Reyhan who teaches Rom, so we are learning Rom as part of Turkish style. It's a fun class and a great workout, because the teacher also does a lot of conditioning. This is our Turkish class doing a sword piece a bit over a year ago, my teen daughter is the first soloist, I made all of her costume.
My daughter's Egyptian Cabaret teacher is doing online classes, her You Tube page has tutorials, if anyone is interested. http://www.youtube.com/user/cassiopeia222My daughter is also dancing ballet again at a different studio, which has a kind teacher. The first time I saw a male belly dancer, I was at Oregon Country Faire about 17 years ago. I went to the bellydance stage and the person was dancing with back to audience. The dancer had long wavey blond hair, and was wearing big dark harem pants and a turkish vest. The dancer was quite good, then the dancer turned around, and it was a guy with a big blond mustache, he looked a bit like a big orange tabby cat with a smile on his face. I got a real kick out of that. He also had excellent abs... |

You are welcome. Swords are both my daughter's and my favorite prop. I like the parasol dances you posted. I had never considered a parasol for prop work, but in your dances it works beautifully. We may need to get some parasols our selves. |

When I attended country fayres there were bellydancers, at the punk rock gatherings there were bellydancers, when I went to Harley biker rallies there were bellydancers, the goth and vampyre scenes always had bellydancers, Pagan events insist on bellydancers....and steampunk. We must all really love those undulating midriffs. I agree with the universality. First bellydancer I remember seeing? The gypsy dancer in From Russia With Love. |
