As for Melbourne sites - anyone know who is using the old tramways building on the corner of Gertude St and Nicholson St?
It's state government owned, used by Yarra Trams. I can tell you with reasonable certainty that it's sadly not an option. It houses a "security room".

Aaaah,

That would explain the metal bars on all the windows and the keypad entry security on the doors.

I have kicking around some ideas for using mechanical iris designs:

Here is an initial idea for a look for an interactive kiosk

Then I thought that maybe an illuminated sign would be better (no one really looks at interactive presentations). A variety of iris designs could open/close on the "punk" part of Steampunk

As for names for the exhibition, how about Neo-Victoria or Neo-Victoriana. Captures both the location and the intention.

Good point, there. Playing off the Victoria collocation is almost essential.

I am ashamed to admit I had to go look up what "collocation" meant  Grin

I love the grandfather clock kiosk for the exhibition - we need one of those!!!

And 'Neo-Victoria' is a good start for an exhibition name - now can we extend it a bit?

Actually I thought it stole too much from your computer design (the base would be circular like your "case"). I dont want to detract from that design (you are including it in the exhibition?)

My first reaction to extending it: Neo-Victoria - Bringing the Past into the Present.

But that sounds like a bad dot-com bubble marketing fad. I'm sure it can be better than that.

Here are some name ideas (feel free to say if their rubbish):

- Neo-Victoriana: An exhibition of antipodean steampunk artifacts

- Neo-Victorianama

- Neo-Victoria: Where the future wears a monocle and tophat

- Neo-Victoriana: A future that never was (a kinda like this one)

How about:

'Neo Victoriana - past futures'

And I sold the communicator PC to a collector in Sydney, although he tells me it is available for exhibitions.

Neo-Victoriana - An alternate steampunk history (I think the second part should include steampunk for clarification)

What do you think you will exhibit? I saw that new rifle, maybe we should rethink that "no guns" policy.

Hi,

I am new to Steampunk and haven't been to any convention for years so I don't quite know exactly what sort of facilities you would be after, but how about the Melbourne Meat Market (http://www.melbourne.vic.gov.au/info.cfm?top=186&pa=2166&pg=4729#meetingRoom). With a bit of work you could probably set up themes in various sections (water, air, house, boiler room, garage, etc).

It's nice and central so public transport/walking isn't an issue.

How many days would you plan to run this event? Would you anticipate affording a "conference centre" style facility or would town halls and Masonic Lodges be fine?

Although what you're talking about for the exhibition is primarily physical arts (mods, from-scratch constructions, fashion) and photography, would it be worth bringing in a textual component? Richard Harland, James Roy and Michael Pryor are Australians who write steampunk or steampunk-like fiction. Perhaps they would make a contribution if approached. James Roy does his own illustration as well. Aiming at a still younger audience (perhaps too young) there are the authors of The Cloudchasers.
Obviously one doesn't want to take it too far to overpower or put too much of a literary bent on an otherwise visual exhibition, but a small component could add variety.

@ Sorontar - I anticipate the event running for the duration of the Melbourne Fringe Festival - which I think is about two weeks. The meat market is one option, but I am still looking for a set of small rooms, sort of downstairs dungeonish.

@ Choreocrat - I am all in favour of some literary input, perhaps a reading by one of the authors from their book one evening, or a few James Roy illustrations on display.

The Old Melbourne Gaol?  http://www.marekai.com/index.php?sectionID=7680&pageID=7694

To quote the page: "Making use of all three floors and 95 cells, the Gaol has been transformed into to a variety of eleborate sets such as Harry Potters' Diagon Alley, The Devils Playground, Enchanted Castles, Cook County Jail and New York Street Scapes  "

The major problem I see with any "touristy" sites is having them for a whole week (or two). Perhaps you need a theatre or something similar, but if you want to use separate rooms, then they might not be suitable.

Will keep on thinking about what I have seen/been to in the past.

Update time folks:

1/. Venues.

I visited the Donkey Wheel House yesterday and did a tour of the basement. The site is great but the costs are - well - 'costly'. To hire the two small gallery rooms for two weeks during Fringe it would be $1000.00. To hire the larger open area (with bar and lunge) for an opening night event would cost another $450 for the night and $40 for a liquor licence. So in venue costs we are up to around $1500.00 if we go down that route. Add to this the $300 for Fringe registration Mind you - we can sell tickets to the opening night to try to cover exhibition costs.

2/. Event.

I have a strong interest from a new steampunk clothing label in running a fashion parade as part of any exhibition opening. This new label will be Melbourne based so they are keen to get involved.

3/. Options.

At this stage I see four options available to us:

Option One - try to raise two grand and use the Donkey Wheel house venue. The other challenge is getting enough good steampunk work to exhibit.

Option Two - throw our support behind a steampunk fashion event as a one night show during Fringe, and we can all make steampunk fashion accessories (goggles, masks, bracers, etc) to compliment the range.

Option Three - approach Melbourne Museum about doing what has been done in Oxford, and exhibiting steampunk items along with Museum pieces (this might work - but once again we would need good pieces).

Option Four - skip the whole thing!

I am tending towards Option Two right now, purely because I think a lot of the good stuff around Steampunk in Melbourne is fashion/costume based and we should perhaps go with our strengths. It also gives us the opportunity to dress up.

Finally - I will now be overseas for most of August and September next year so my organising capacity has been limited, but I can still contribute to any event.

So let me know what you think folks, shall we get an evenings event of high fashion on the Fringe calender?

So no need for a big mechanical iris then? Back to the drawing board

Tell us more about this fashion label

I would think a big mechanical iris would be an important part of a fashion parade and accessories 'viewing'.

As for the new label - I will get the team involved to start a thread soon.... Wink

Oh, I have been storing this one away for years!

"Neo-Victoria: Yesterday's Tomorrow"

Donkey Wheel House is fantastic, however I think before committing such vast caches of cash, we should secure thing to exhibit! So at this point, I also think Option Two is the best for this year, and next year we can think about donkeys and wheel houses to our hearts content.

there is some old ruined factory somewhere in north Melbourne that some Guerilla filmmakers have used before, otherwise perhaps the Brickworks in Brunswick is an option, my brother has often snuk in there for some photo opportunities. Can't say if there are any non graffiti'd areas in there though.

Indeed, I fear that he may be thinking of Steampump which was on in the city back in May, cf . http://brassgoggles.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,21611.0.html
