I am assuming now that Lord and Lady Vonricken are no longer attending the event? If anybody is in contact with either of them, could we have confirmation please? I'd hate to tell the hotel they're no longer wishing to come and rooms/tickets be sold elsewhere if it is simply a matter of a delay.  Undecided

I have had a request from one couple who would like to stay January 1st, but are unable to attend on the 31st. Is there anybody else in this position, as I will ask the hotel if we'd be able to book places for such individuals at the discounted £50 price (per room including breakfast but not evening meal)??

I will call after awaiting responses for a couple of days.

Unfortunately Lord and Lady Von Ricken have had to withdraw due to his Lordship's professional commitments on New Year's Eve.

They would be interested in the possibility of attending on the evening of the 1st only.

Many thanks for the update Major. Lady Von Ricken has approached me by pm also.

I have called the hotel today and they have confirmed that anybody wishing to stay just the night of the 1st, will also get their accommodation (including breakfast) for the discounted price of £50. I understand Lord and Lady Von Ricken and Lord and Lady Randomjedi are both keen to stay on the 1st, so I have reserved two further rooms. I have not reserved them under names, so please call the hotel directly to book the rooms under your specific 'real' names.

I have also mentioned there could be further couples who wish to do this, and they're happy with that. Please call the hotel and/or post here if you too wish to stay for just the 1st and not the 31st.

I'd be up for that. I already have a few things in the pipeline for gifts etc. I'm not telling who I have for the official secret santa, but I hope they'll like it.

The Victorians invented Christmas as we know, by who is this,'Santa' you speak of, and why is he secret?, fugitive from justice, eh?

You cannot beat a bran tub for surprise gifts, it is tradional and at the very least you are guaranteed a breakfast which would leave you astonishingly regular...

I will do a bit of research on Victorian gift giving traditions, it probably involves Morris dancing though...

Research done, fortunately doesn't involve Morris Dancing.

The Victorian tradition of the Christmas Pie was done after Christmas dinner, a big bowl of grain would be brought in and people would take turns to spoon out a spoonful of grain, little gifts would be secreted in the grain and won by the person spooning it out. Its a bloody bran tub after all! Just with a bit more style.

We could therefore do a Cogmanay Pie, for after dinner, I would suggest rather than bury the gifts though we bury numbered tokens (and one or two blanks!) in the grain/ for reclaiming gifts from the pile, and then opening them. We could always put a couple of 'booby' prizes in as well. Much hilarity should enshue.

I have purchased half a dozen flying Chinese Lanterns from 'Help For Heroes' the aim would be to have a hot air balloon race just after Midnight to see the New Year in in proper Steampunk style.

I was thinking us gentlemen and ladies could attach our cards to the balloons, and see whether any are returned, by well meaning members of the public.

The lanterns are in a pack of three, one each of red, white and blue (very appropriate) and are biodegradable. Having used these before they really require 2 persons to launch, and can be relatively easily tracked by naked eye, although use of binocculars and spyglasses would help. This makes a nice alternative to fireworks. Perhaps then retire inside for mulled wine.

A couple of friends of mine from the SF Community are interested in joining the party, I have asked them to enquire of the hotel as regards vacancies. If so this would take us over the dreaded 13 for dinner.

Peter, I like the bran tub/cogmany gift idea, we just need to work out if the gift is for a lady Gentleman or either.

If we all bring a couple we could do this on N.Y.E. and N.Y.D. as we have 4 or so more people joining us, and I am sure they will want to join in the pressie fun.

Popping corn would be a good medium to use and then we can pop the corn hopefully over an open fire. Yes we have a corn popper with turning handle and the children men will enjoy playing with it.

Your,
Lady Elsie.

indeed we could go for unisex gifts like pipe tobacco (only joking). We have pretty much an even split in the sexes but I suspect there will be a little trading.if we use tokens choices can be from pink or blue piles of boxed presents (if we can source identical boxes). Someone might pick up two tokens in their turn, someone none

Popcorn is an excellent idea (although that would be a fair bit of popcorn). The tradition is for wheat but corn is a first rate substitute. If no roasting fire I have a suitable popcorn maker and popcorn is an ideal accompaniament to party games, especially if appropriate flavourings can be found (absinthe popcorn?)

Ladies and Gentlemen, please remember that the balance (£40 per ticket) is due for the NYE dinner and party by December 6th.  Grin

Already have one of my presents, and have my eyes on a couple more (one may be a package of a couple of small gifts Wink)

Outfit for NYE has been started (rather showy attire for me (if it works!) so I'm getting rather excited now!  Grin

Absolutely Mr Harrow. Anybody who is coming to this event last minute and didn't pay the deposit earlier (£20), will need to pay the party and dinner amount in full, for the pricely sum of £60 per person. Accommodation of course should've been booked by everybody by now, with nothing to pay until departure. However, please remember, if anybody has to drop out, you MUST cancel your own accommodation, otherwise you will be charged.

Many thanks. Certainly looking forward to this!

Tickets paid for. I'm glad we were reminded about this otherwise I would have forgotten.

Really looking forward to this now, can't wait. We will be staying only a single night, but will in all probablity be hanging around for the evening on the second night and leaving after dinner.
