I hadn't heard of the Aston Hall event before I started looking into it.  Then I found a page on the BBC's website on it.  The link to buy tickets didn't say too much, but boy this makes it sound amazing:

"Visitors will be able to wander through the grand state rooms, along the magnificent oak lined Long Gallery and down to the servants' quarters and kitchens.

The 17th century will be brought to life by a range of entertainers including music from Diabolus in Musica, costumed performers Bear Faced Cheek, Pattern 23 and the English Civil War Society.

Outdoors, there will be a period craft fayre, sword fighting, juggling and refreshments including fine ale and a pig roast."

That on top of the Christmas Fair?  I'm so jealous!

You are of course welcome to join us if you can... Failing that we will raise a glass to your health. Cheers, sir!

You are too kind.  Unfortunately I must be there in spirit only.  I do hope there will be at least photographer attending, though--a well-taken photograph can capture the soul of the moment.  If anyone is in two-minds whether to have another glass or not, then stop your dithering and take my name!

Oh dear, Gluhwein & wheat beer at the market, now fine ales at Aston Hall, I feel a hangover on the horizon  Shocked ...oh how we suffer for our pleasures  Wink
But wait, what is this I see ?.....a pig roast ?......fond memories of the aroma of cooking flesh & juices dripping down chins as the carcase grows rapidly thinner that others grow fatter & we must not forget the cracking....& the apple sauce........ & stuffing.

Ahhhh I can scarce contain my enthusiasm !!

Well Aston Hall should be a sight considering they spent like £13 million on it.

My ticket arrived this morning!  I'm starting to get a little excited about it now... then again, that could be due to a sugar high I'm on at the moment  Cheesy

Persons intending to travel by open carriage should select a seat with their backs to the engine, by which means they will avoid the ashes emitted therefrom, that in travelling generally, but particularly through the tunnels, prove a great annoyance; the carriage farthest from the engine will in consequence be found the most desirable.

Have found a route which does not involve going through the centre of London by tube, however it is in fact slower... or would be if the tubes were actually running that day.....

Having had a chat with my Father regarding getting there he has said he can't get us there until about 4(ish), so we shall be meeting you all there in the market (probably at the bar if the numerous Gluhwein references are anything to go by  Grin )

I was thinking of an earlier start than that, I must admit. I've now found an exhibition at the Custard Factory, Bodies Revealed, that may appeal to the gore-seekers amongst us- I'll post a link when I'm not accessing by phone. But I'm guessing by 4 if not before we will be in need of a medicinal gluhwein or two, just to keep out the cold...

If that's the freak show I'm thinking of then I would not go to it if you paid me, I find it totally abhorrent for another so called human
being to flay other humans & put their dessicated remains on public view........

However, Hah, I said I'd find you in the bar  Grin Grin Grin

If Ebay & the Royal Mail don't let me down I'll be there in White Tie.  Just waiting now for the waistcoat, gloves and trousers (maybe- some packages apparently arrived for me this morning...).  I'm just deliberating whether to wear my silk topper- I'd be devastated if it were to be damaged by some idiot in the street crowds thinking it would be a lark to steal it or try it on.

I can deal pretty well with the cold, as my parents never have the heating on  Cheesy
If my felt topper nearly got stolen in Oxford, I hate to think what *may* happen to a vintage one in Birmingham.

I can confirm that tickets are now gone... However anyone without tickets is still welcome to join up for the xmas market visit...

Your incentives include:
-The big wheel is back at birmingham this year.
- the german market sells interesting food, beer and gluhwein (oh, and an assortment of traditional german gifts, including wooden toys, toys with strings that I can't remember the proper name for, crystally things, winter hats, etc. Did I mention the gluhwein?)
- the craft market adjacent to the german market also has interesting food and drink, and other nice stuff such as leather work, jewellery, peruvian stuffs, horseradish vodka, chilli vodka, etc (obsessed with alcohol? Moi?)
- the great santa run is on...
-as Mr Bellows has ably pointed out, there is another craft market, hog roast and beer at Aston Hall, which people could loiter at whilst waiting for ticket holders to go round...
- we can always reconvene at the old joint stock or similar afterwards if anyone is game or has time...
(mr Bellows- you could always get the bus back!)

That's without even taking into account the numerous exhibitions and other things on...

Btw, Mr Harrison- you may wish to be wary for your silk topper as much for the rain as anything else...for anyone else, whilst I've never had any trouble, the german market is always absolutely packed, so worth making sure any shiny things are securely attached to your person, not just because of fagin's foundlings, but also simply because it.s quite easy to have stuff knocked off in the crush!

There's a good chance I should be able to make the meeting for the market. When (what time?) and where will people be meeting?

Quite- the weather seems at the moment to be going against me on that score.  My gloves and waistcoat arrived yesterday so all I now need are a pair of black or white braces and my White Tie ensemble is ready.

So, who managed to get tickets in the end?

And as no doubt the streets will be crammed, shall we meet in a bar (the Old Joint Stock or the Old Contemptibles) or at one of the railway stations?
