Hello all,

I have a proposition for a meet up for those of you based within travelling distance of Birmingham...

Aston Hall is having on if its Candlelit events this year 3-12 Dec:
http://www.bmag.org.uk/events?id=382&start=42

I have been before, and thoroughly enjoyed it.  And as if that recommendation wasn't sufficient, some of the entertainment on at the event will be a display of the gentlemanly art of defence, demonstrated by Himself, alongside Dr When and Mr Mark Vance, Esq. Fencing Master (who some of you may know for having curly hair).

As if tha wasn't enough, the German market and craft market will both be on at those times.  I'm also waiting to see if there will be a skating rink this year... in any case, I'm sure a jolly Xmas outing could be had by all!  (there may need to be some logistics around travelling to and from Aston Hall, but I am sure that can be sorted!)

I would propose this outing to be 5 or 6 Dec, ie, the first weekend, as the event finishes on Sat 12 the following weekend, and people may be heading to Oxford for 13/14 Dec for the event on there.

So what do people think?  Any takers?

haha -- being from the US of A I thought you were referring to Birmingham, Alabama which is but a minor drive from me in Atlanta. Alas, it's a bit farther. I would have joined you otherwise!

Aston Hall by candlelight is definately worth seeing, last time I went the enactors were really putting a lot into the event, including staging a story/ swordfight in the middle of the entrance queue Cheesy

The place itself is worth visitng at any time, some of the rooms are beautiful, especially the floor in the long library.

I see no reason whatever why I shouldn't be able to attend.  So count me in!

I can get to the Xmas market but not Aston Hall. So I could perhaps meet people there if you go to the market afterwards or on another evening.

great to see so nanny people interested.

Regarding travel to Aston Hall, the hall is right by Aston Villa football ground, so there are reasonable transport links for those of us sans vehicle... There should be buses, although the Travel West Mids site was having a moment When I tried to check earlier today, so I don't have the bus route yet. There are also 2 train stations, Witton, which is slightly closer, and Aston, both of which are under half a mile.

For those with cars, there is parking on site at Aston Hall.

It may be better to attend the hall fairly early in the evening to allow for travel back- it.s open 6til 9.30, with admissions at timed half hourly intervals. I will try to find out how many per group, etc.

Karoshi, the story/ sword-fight you say in the queue last time was almost certainly Himself, mr Vance, and co, it.s been a regular thing for them for the last few years now. Glad you enjoyed it!

After consultation with the Good lady wife, I have been reminded that on the 6th of December we have a previous engagement where the Coglings will be performing in their annual dance show, so it is with deep regret that we cannot join you. Sad

We hope you all have a splendid time.

saturday 5th sounds ideal to me. I rang the cooking office today to ask about group numbers for the timed entries. The event usually sells out.

My suggestion is:
- meet during saturday afternoon to peruse the German market and any other delights birmingham may be offering (still no word on whether there will be an icerink this year)
- travel to aston hall by bbq or public transport for a 6.30 timed entry. Today there were still 140 tickets left for 6.30. Only 40- ish for 6.00 though.
This means public transport will still be readily avail for a return to the city centre to carouse some more until people need to depart.

Public transport: either a train from new street station to witton, or the no. 7 bus, followed by a short walk. Personally. As someone who regularly has the opportunity to experience the delights of b.ham's bus service, i'd prefer the train.

Tickets for aston hall will need to be bought in advance: £10 adults, £8 children and concessions, eg, students, unemployed, etc, £36 for a family of 2 adults and 3 children.
Sorry, i don't have the capacity to book everyone's tickets, so i suggest that once we agree the time, everyone book their own in short order!

How does this sound so far?

I'll do a proper update with attendance list, booking info, etc, when i can get on line via a computer and not my phone, as scrolling up and down and editing is quite difficult on this beastie, not to mention the sometimes amusing predictive text errors...

I can certainly come to the German Market either before or after you all go to the hall. Just say what time and I'll turn up most likely.
