Oh its great BUT if you use it travel in groups or act like you own the train and the tracks it runs on because you get to meet some ... interesting individuals late at night.

On another note if anyone is going to get into town early I would love to meet up. I'll be in town at least 2 weeks ahead of time so pm me.

Before I was costuming, I took the MARTA in from Marietta area.  It's GREAT - BUT - if you have a LOT of baggage or rolling tubs (which I certainly do now) I don't think the MARTA would be best choice.  And it DOES literally stop right UNDER the HYATT.  The MARTA escalators come up right near the Food Court at Hyatt.

Took the train last year(my first year attending) though I wasn't in costume(was going to, but the bits and pieces needed for my costume didn't arrive in time, poor planning on my part) and other than missing out on the late-night events(The trains stop running at 1 AM, IIRC) it was fine.  There's a station under the mall that leads up to the food court which is directly connected via elevated walkway to two of the hosting hotels.  Very convenient.

I'll probably do the same this year, if they approve my vacation request and barring any unforeseen events, only this year I should have costumes(two planned, so far, one of which is Victorian in style, the other just a bit of Chuck Jones inspired absurdity)

I always take Marta, and was in steampunk gear on Friday last year, and ended up having my picture taken with everyone in the car, just about. I usually stay at home, though, and just commute on Marta back and forth. It's not always the most convenient option, but it's definitely a lot cheaper.

Larry Hagman is coming to Dragon*Con. Maybe we can have a "Who shot JR" contest with the most inventive weapon contest. The most inventive steampunk weapon gets the "I fired a projectile or rayed and hit JR" contest parchment."

Just an idea.

Well, they approved my vacation request so the biggest hurdle of me attending has been jumped.  Now I just have to order my membership and find somewhere to stay.

Finding a hotel is the hardest thing to do for Dragon*Con. They have a link for the Hotels on the web site. I included it here.

Aye, though I tend to run on a tight budget, so I will likely do what I did last year, find a cheap hotel near a Marta station and stay there instead.  It's not all that bad and a LOT cheaper.  Only real inconveniences are the train ride and not being able to stay for the late-night events.  If I shop around, I can find a place to stay for under $40 a night compared to over $120 per night on the hotels from the DragonCon website.

Calling missing late-night dragon con an inconvenience is like saying its slightly annoying to order and pay for a meal but leave before the entree is served.  I had to book into over-flow hotels this year, too, but close enough that its on my schedule, not MARTA's.

Considering how I tend to get around 1 to 2 AM, it's not that big a deal for me.  Never been much of a night owl.

Isn't it time to start talking about this again? It's only 100 or so odd days away.

Probably is.  Got my card in the mail last week.  Nice, though not totally unexpected surprise after a VERY rough week.  Tickets payed for, vacation time approved and hotel reserved.  Now I just gotta finish my timepiece and a couple of other odds and ends and I've only got 100 days to get it done, hehe.

I gotta get my paperwork in order for this.  I know I got a room (two blocks away, close as I could get this year, curse and damn NASCAR and Foot Ball) and I got time off from work, and I think I bought tickets... but I screwed that up last year, and basically bought tickets for myself and the missus twice.  Oops.

We bought tickets at the con last year for this year, but no luck with the room.. A friend  of ours scored a room, but doesn't want to share... He'll be too busy drinking and partying.. We will just have to adapt and enjoy what we can..

Hello All!

This will be my first time at Dragon Con, tho I am no Con Virgin Wink
I will be traveling from England to attend, so a bit nervous......but you all seem like a friendly bunch!

This will be my first major costume appearance and trying to proudly claim the name/title/label Steampunk.
I have not been meet with such 'open-ness' to my interpretation on Steampunk (I think alot of people are Neo-Victorian, Elitist, or just not nice).
I hope to see or be in the parade, go to a party, or just travel in group and exchange conversation!

Hmmm, would any of you steamy folk want to split a room or something? I'm afraid I won't have enough for a room by myself at one of the convention hotels.

Do you have a room reserved already? If not it's likely you won't be able to find one- they tend to sell out by early March.. We missed out..so no room for us!

URGENT

If you had a room reserved in the Baymont, you best get yourself a new room.  I've just received word that the hotel is changing ownership and is closing on the 16th of August.  As I was staying there, myself, I'm somewhat dismayed by this news.

ACT FAST.

Ya, we got us a back-up plan.  Its about a block and a half further from the con (going the other direction) which makes it about 3 and half further than I'd like to be, but at least its not in that should-drive-but-fuck-parking-I'll-just-walk range.  That woulda sucked.

I think this is going to be the year that finally learns us how to properly book a damn room for Dragon.  Its expensive, but given my wife's delicate constitution and my desire to have her to the room and back easily being on-site it well worth the extra cost.  She'll see twice as much of the "party hours" of the con if bed is just an elevator away, ya know?

Yeah. I hear ya. You gotta keep the ladies happy.

If I didn't live so close to downtown I'd totally want to have a close place to crash.

I'm a baby steampunk and a first-time congoer - does anyone have any advice for me? I'm moving to Atlanta this August, so hotels are not a problem.

DragonCon can be done as a commuter, but the trains stop running shortly after midnight, so you miss some of the fun late stuff.  It's also not always convenient to get to
a station, depending on where you will be living.

If you have friends who live inside the I-285 ring (The Perimeter, we like to call it), then they might be a better option - crash on their floor for the weekend.

It's nearly impossible to drive into the con zone on a daily basis - hotel parking fills up, and there is not a lot of downtown parking available.

There are more Atl denizens around here - I'm sure they can add more tips for you.

It depends greatly on which line you take from Peachtree Center.  I commuted from the north end a couple of years ago, and had no concerns riding the last or second-to-last train of the night.  But if you are heading west or south, it probably is quite different.
