I subscribe to the email newsletter of Kovels, a publishing company that is known for its antique and collector books. Imagine my amusement when I read this as the lead article in the latest edition:

Kovels Komments [February 2, 2011]: Steampunk is the Latest Style to Entice Collectors

Be one of the first to buy "steampunk," a futuristic style that blends a view of the Victorian past with the technology of the present. Dress like a Victorian dandy while using a computer keyboard made of typewriter parts. The result is a modern folk art style that is already mentioned in art history alongside Goth and the psychedelic designs of the punk rock world. There are conventions and meetings. You can find them on the internet.

While the feature is of course encouraging, I cannot help but laugh at how one can be "one of the first to buy steampunk" when there are already established and popular conventions and events. Smiley

Also: "folk art"? Excuse me, but is this 1967, and anyone not doing approved modernism for one of six dealers in Manhattan is some sort of quaint outsider? Possibly, this was a post from re-enactors who specialize in the Cold-War era.

Madame C.

Since you are, presumably, registered to post on the site, kindly pop in and reassure the person who commented about the use of rare clock parts that us steamers are also not in favour of such vandalism.
