I am fortunately not the one the loss occured to But in the interest of fair play and sportsmanship, I am hoping said person will gain satisfaction with the return of his creation Some scoundrel took off with the following item while it was on display at DragonCon The details are here reposted from the LJ entry http://brute-force.livejournal.com/127377.html my eyes were opened to Happy Hunting Reposted WANTED. Some of you may have heard, I had a piece stolen from me at Dragon Con. Not just some ordinary piece but a one of a kind Monicle that was to be in featured in a Steampunk Exhibit at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford this October. I'm will pay $200.00 for it's safe return on a "no questions asked" basis. I will pay $500.00 if it leads to the arrest of the one who stole it. Remember, it is a one of a kind piece. There will never be another. If you see someone wearing it they are definately connected to the theft and a felony. I will also produce a custom piece for anyone who gets the theif arrested. Have you been looking at one of those arms thinking $1499.00 is beyond your reach? You Get me this person and it's yours. Sincerely, Thomas Willeford

I am horrified. We all trust each other at these things. The UK Convivium at the Asylum felt like a huge family without the sibling rivalry. We had an exhibiting stall (not selling) and left it unattended for quite long periods, so we could both go to the talks and so on. Not a thing was removed. Not, admittedly that there was anything of such value as the monicle.
I guess no one would be dim enough now to wear it anywhere near any gathering of steampunkers, let alone to attempt to sell it.
Fingers crossed for its return though.

What about the Steam Pistol? Although arguably harder to walk off with that must be accorded equal value and it remained safe. Such villains and scoundrels just deter people from putting lovely things on display. Shame on the bounder.

i must say we need to be on the look out for the parts it was made of as well, as they may try to modify it or use the parts to make something else. The pictures on the guys site (livejournal) are quite large and detailed so it should be easy to spot the parts should they show up.

What if I see someone wearing this--how do I know if it's the thief or if the owner got it back? Could someone direct me to pictures of the real owner?

Go check out his blog, or search just about any internet picture host for "brute force leather." I'm pretty sure he's the bearded gent with the orange ponytail.

This must be very disheartening for the artist and puts a sour note on a day for everyone. Such a shame.
At least it will be harder for them to sell or wear and get away with it if this message spreads.

If it does no harm being open,I'd like to see it remain so.
Someone may be waiting for the incident to be forgotten to reveal the missing monocles.
Another, who may not even be aware of steampunk now, could come across this thread and uncover the goods and the abductor.
With any luck,we could see it revived by good news when the case is solved.

I agree shutting this down before the case is solved is just plain irresponsible. If it were your goods that had been stolen would you want people to be irritable and want others to not be able to talk and or work on a solution.

Perhaps we'll be lucky and the thief like many of there sort will be a dunce and show up to dragon '10 wearing the item. I'll certainly keep an eye out in the area as I actually live in Georgia and frequent every shop I can find the sells anything even slightly steampunk.

I intend to leave this open until we can find them.
But we do need updates from the victim.
Has there been any new developments?

I've been a friend of Mr. Willeford (the creator of the item) for many years and while he doesn't often post here (he's kept pretty busy running him business) I know he would appreciate it if the topic could stay open.
Many Thanks.
