Thomas (of Brute Force Studios) suffered the theft of a monocle during DragonCon this year...a one-of-a-kind piece that was going to be displayed in the Steampunk Exhibit in an Oxford museum in October. Here is a link to a post he made about it: http://community.livejournal.com/steamfashion/2071981.htmlHe is offering a reward for its return (no questions asked), and a reward leading to the arrest of the thief. Please, if you are scouring over pictures from DragonCon 2009, and you see the monocle (have to look in the linked post...I apparently can't get an image in here properly), please contact Thomas at Bruteforceleather.com Alternately, please keep an eye out if you go to any cons this weekend or in the near future. Thanks in advance

I know it's not a joking matter...it's outrageous that someone would pilfer such a gorgeous item. I sincerely hope they get both the monoggle back and the thief gets what he deserves but I couldn't help but smile at the request that we " please keep an eye out"....for a monoggle....

hopefully with such a wide coverage the theif will never get to wear it and other would-be theives will learn that it's not worth stealing anything in such a tight knit community, where everyone's looking out for it.

Has anyone heard anything new about the theft? Has it been recovered? Has the person responsible been found? Any leads?
I've been keeping an ear out for anything, but no one's got any new information--at least, not that I've heard. Does anyone here have any 'insider information'? It would be such a shame if this didn't have a happy ending.

Why would anybody steal that Monocle, to me, one of the best things about steampunk is dressing up and hanging out with friends, but the person that stole it, could not wear it with out most Steampunkers recognising it, so whats the use of stealing it

Yes any normal person would be proud to own that Monoggle. One can only imagine that the person who stole it secretly parades around in it in their bedroom for their own fetishistic purposes.

I don't think Brute Force will want it back after that. Not without a good iodine bath and perhaps a few irradiations.

The only other real alternative motive is professional jealousy which I really do not understand, Herr Doktor for example admires and has bought the goggles of Atomfabrik (which are spectacular in every sense of the word), despite being a maker par excellence himself. This not only shows taste, but also a celebration of a fellow makers skill in this particular area. The very epitomy of being a maker. If the Monoggle was stolen out of professional jealousy, I think less of that person than if they had stolen it for the own fetishistic purposes. One would have stolen for live however misguided, the other for hate.

It could be a personal grudge and so done in spite or it could have simply been an irrational moment of weakness. The consequences of this action may not have been fully thought through, as if often the case with opportunist thieves.

If it was a moment of weakness or some other irrational act then the thief should send it back anonymously as they cannot possibly wear it without it being known (as already stated)
Real bad form stealing from the community!

It is strange that it was not returned anonymously, which suggests either the jealousy or fetish motives suggested above.

I don't think we can assume such motives (especially bizarre fetish ideas) or lines of thinking about someone we've yet to meet or hear a word from.
They may have yet to see these advertisements or simply ditched the device into a bin when remorse or realisation of the possible consequences of their actions hit home. It could have been destroyed before now. You can't return it if it has been lost or broken. It could also have been sold on or given to another person or maybe the thief or current owner does not believe that they will not be hunted if they hand it in anonymously - fear holding them back.

Yes, it would. Perhaps even a reward, if you can stomach paying off a thief.

I really hope it was some fool outside the community who did this. While I understand that my particular lean towards Neo-Victorianism might give me a different view than some steampunks, the concept of a renewal of chivalry is something I assume, from what I've read and who I've spoken to, is a goal of the steampunk community, and to think that this would happen from within, well, makes me feel rather ashamed of the person who would do this. It would be one thing for some uncultured rapscallion to steal a trinket, probably a misguided youth in need of care and attention admiring the item a bit too much and not understanding the consequences involved in such an action fully, but for someone who claims to be a morally upstanding citizen, nay, a gentleman or lady in this modern age of moral degradation to do so is, well, supremely disheartening.

I and the...two members of the Central florida Junior Steampunk society will keep a watch for it in person and on the internet as well.
hopefully, once the new application by google comes out, thieves wont be able to sell it at all. because it references images and such.
but yeah, I'll keep a close watch out.
as much as I would want something cool and unique, I wouldn't steal it from someone...I know what it's like to work really hard on something.
