maybe a poll? I think there will be more becasue many of us will come out of the steamy closet since The Asylum!

Can't say i knew of a meet up in April and would probably have been either too hungover or stuck in a pub with mates anyway to make it. Whitby gets exceedingly busy for me. Just walking down a street can take 20mins due to having way too many friends there.

Hello chaps, sorry to have been out of the loop for a couple of days - I have actually been in Whitby would you beleive although the relevant managers at the Royal and Shambles were not available to meet with me.

Bothams for tea is fast becoming a tradition (Lady Elsie and Aubrey took tea there yesterday).  I think we may have trouble fitting in but if someone would be kind enough to make a booking that would be excellent.

What I was suggesting was a location that was nominated as the Steampunks' gathering place of choice.  Somewhere that could function as a drop in place for us where we can meet up when we feel like it rather than organised times etc. (Pretty much how Charlotte House functioned.  You never know we could end up with a little corner of steaminess that is our own within WGW)

Thanks for the enquiries Ma... Trinity  ( Grin How to become infamous in one easy workshop).  If the Royal are happy for us to have space that is perfect.  I am sure it would not harm their business at all.  Alternatively the Shambles is a great place and the side room might do the bizz for us.

I would be happy to organise but I don't want anyone to think I am trying to tread on toes.  It is not the VSS way we are inclusive and friendly but do like to see things happen.

Anyway looking forward to it - the town seemed quiet with only three steampunks wandering around...

Unfortunately Tink, from Trinity's investigations, it looks like this isn't going to be an option as they need the room for coach parties of dear oldies Undecided

Shambles bar is fairly central but I'm just not sure that
a) they will accommodate us - we've tried to get the side or back room booked in the past on WGW weekends and they weren't open to the suggestion, and we know the owners!  Sad
b) it gets VERY busy on goth weekends and last time it took us 1/2 hour to try for a coffee and there was nowhere to sit, so we gave up and went elsewhere  Sad
c) Although the goths do frequent the Shambles during the day, on an evening the last two WGWs it seems to have remained a local venue full of townies and chavs... with no sight of goths. We've been gutted as we've had some amazing nights in there in the past.

I still think Bothams that can hold up to 80 seated (and many more standing if needed) would be a good idea for a set daytime gathering at a minimum, the choice of tea and tiffin there is wonderous!  Cheesy

Can I suggest we book Bothams regardless, as a definate gathering for the Saturday, that can be advertised in the almanac (I know they guy who's actually putting this piece together - turns out I work with him and never knew!), so we're spreading the word for new steampunkers and non Brass gogglers!!??  Grin

We can then also see what else we can arrange for all day/evening drop-in as an additional venue. There certainly seems enough people who could be interested!

I'll try to get hold of a couple of old friends who used to live in Whitby to see if they can think of anywhere else suitable...  Grin

Another idea could well be the upstairs of Resolution. In the past they've had the
Alternative night there in the Saturday and Sunday nights (Laughtons on Friday night), but last year I don't think they were on.... certainly not the Sunday night. It's a nice private room, decent size and it's own bar! It's near a few antique shops and old properties too, so reasonable for shopping and photography opportunities  Cheesy

I'll make some calls.

Thanks

Bothams is a good plan.

Whilst it may be pleasant to have our own dedicated space we can always flash mob.  All we need do is nominate a lingering spot and the rest will happen.

If nothing else is forthcoming should we adopt the Royal?

I know Whitby pretty well (I have family there) and when strolling around yesterday was looking for a suitable spot too but nowehere really springs to  mind.

I have a Spa-plus ticket from what i recall and should be able to wander fairly freely. I also found out a couple of weeks ago that a friend is running the Burlesque side. A lovely lady called Bella Besame, who does a load of stuff arround Leeds and Manchester, so i would expect this to be of a very high standard - I'm reasonably well known on the burlesque side up north as its another area where you can dress up and actualy be complimented rather than ridiculed (although i'm with Adam ant on that one).

The Royal is perfect as it has facilities and refreshments, as well as two very large lounge areas.  In addition the last two WGW we have taken refuge here and it is nice a quiet, unlike the Met, Spa, Leisure Centre and Shambles.

This said, the only response I have had was from the receptionist and she "thought" that as it was a lounge for guests we would not be able to hire it.  I explained I was not looking to hire it, but to use it and this confused the hell out of her.

Apparently it is used when the coaches arrive and depart as an overflow for the reception, so it is used sporadically.

OK so can I formally state that The Royal will be our resting point of choice?  Any last minute dissenting voices but if you are dissenting please be so good as to have a firm option instead?

We need to confirm a booking for Bothams (Saturday 4pm?)

Any joy with a visit to the Science Museum,  I've not been for a few years?

Looking forward to it.

Well done guys.

Hello Trinity the burlesque show sounds a good idea. We would love to go. We will have a look later as we have limited internet access while travelling around on holiday.

If a venue can be agreed on, myself and Uncle would be delighted to attend. It'll keep us out of the pub for a bit (hic). Hope that's a help in assessing numbers.

If the Royal isn't forthcoming we are currently looking into getting the basement bar of the Resolution pub (just up from the road from Sherlocks team room) for the Steampunk drop in. We'll post more info when we know more.

Well done Sir Ninian

Consensus at this point is therefore if we can have our own private space (Resolution) we will do and it will be announced here.  If we can't then we will simply informally adopt the Royal.

Tea at Bothams should go ahead regardless.

Greetings all,

Sorry for my extended absence from the boards but needs must etc. etc.

I have been less hot on organising the annual Whitby Steampunk Meet as I will not be in Whitby this year due to other events occuring at the same time.

To answer some previously asked questions:

There has been an officially organised Steampunk meet at Whitby since 2007.

Every meet since then including the one in April 2009 has been booked and arranged by myself.

There were indeed plans for one this year.

As a latecomer to this discussion I feel there is little I can contribute that has not already been said.

Intriguing to see faces from last years meet taking the reins. Well done all.

Not quite sure if I am I still needed to be involved in this or not?

Best Regards,

We will raise a cup of tea to you in your absence Sir and hope you will be able to make it to future WGWs.

The Tea Shop meet is indeed a legacy of your previous sterling efforts.  The adoption of a base is a new addition as the scene continues to develop and grow.

Tinker,

Wonderful idea about the adoption of a base. All I can see in my minds eye is a Victorian explorers club, albeit better equipped.

I'm sure I speak on behalf of Steampunks all over the UK when  I say thank you for your continued efforts in making the UK Steampunk events scene as deep and widespread as the US one. Terrible shame I couldn't make it to Asylum this year but I'm sure there will be another! From what I heard everyone had a marvellous time.

I feel easier knowing that my legacy is this year in the capable hands of yourself and Sir Ninian.

Trinitytrash, as we're residing together for the weekend, please book myself and Sir Ninian at any events you are attending yourself. We are certainly up for all three suggestions, in addition to the Bothams gathering on Saturday afternoon and the drop-ins at either Resolution or the Royal (subject to discussion/agreement).

Following actually speaking to a person who knew their nether regions from their elbow at the hotel I have been asked to put my request in writing, which I have done.  So I should have a response by the end of the week fingers crossed.

Jon and Teri I will book off one of the Sunday sessions at the museum for the following:
Teri & Chris
Jon
Adam
Malika

I am sure the Discombobulus crew will pipe up soon for the second session on the Sunday, however the chap has agreed to extend to 6 in a group at an absolute push!
